So, do the diff classes ever grant permanent benefits?

IF that doesn't help, here's my example:
Hunter 3
Force 5
Wartecher 2

If I raise my HU and FO levels, will it make any difference when I switch back to Wartecher?

Nope. Type Levels only affect unlocking Expert Types, and your stats while using THAT particular Type.
