If it's Virtual Console, it should be the original. All Virtual Console is, is an emulator running a ROM.

Seeing as I never had the oppertunity to play any of the old Phantasy Star games, I am definately downloading this.

You may or may not be disappointed. I'd highly suggest going into it with an open mind and possibly some maps from GameFAQs.

Should I get this or the Genesis cartridge? On one hand, I'd get the most accurate sound from the Genesis. On the other hand, the Wii download's probably less expensive, and it won't need a battery to maintain saved games. Ack! I can't decide!

If you're looking just to play PS2, get the VC version. The only reason to own an original cart at all these days is for bragging rights, sentimental value and/or collecting.
