And so, I have decided to take a few screenshots of some of what I have done in it. This is merely a selection of a few parts in the game.

interesting work there! I want to comment on this if I might, since I noticed what might have been some of the sources of your inspiration.

outside graphics remind me of final fantasy mystic quest mixed in with some elements from chrono trigger and phantasy star 4.

that menu has final fantasy 4-9 written all over it, but via a mirror.

battle shots just scream "LUFIA!!!"

dialogue could use some work. Example: what the elder could have said in the first shot could read, "If you can bring me two chicks, some chips and dip, and all the american pie dvd's, I will allow you to play with my things".

@Masou: Maybe. Once I get enough done with it to make a true test play.

@Pika: Yeah, sorry about that. Dunno what to say.

@Cel: Well, you're pretty close with all the Final Fantasy games (including Mystic Quest http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif ). My inspiration for the city came from Minas Tirith, Meltokio (ToS), and Rabinatre (FFXII). The world was partly inspired by FFXII (it is in sections, not 'you walk on overworld map'). The menu and battle styles are the default, and I do not know how to change it to anything else (which is good, because I find this style easier XDD).

So, will it let you implement any kind of fancy special abilities, or are you limited to a pre-existing set of moves?

If the former, it had BETTER have at least one long, over-the-top spell animation that decimates everything in sight.

AlexCraig

@Random: I can make my own abilities/spells/skills/whatever. I haven't done so yet, but in time I will.

@Tal: The story is pretty good so far. I am still working out some of it, but to this point it is running smoothly. Once I finish more of the paperwork and typed out background, I will post SOME of the storyline. I want it to be a secret for the most part until I complete it and decide to create gamedisks for people.

EDIT: I think I will also use this thread to post updates for what I have done in the game.

Most PCs are human, 1 is a catgirl, and 2 have dragon in their bloodline but they do not look at all draconic.

Looks very nice! Couple of questions.
What do you use for this? Is it based on Flash, Adobe, what?
What are some things you might need to know to code stuff like this? I've always been interested in coding and video game design.
Battles, are they random, or do you see the monster and you attack it and/or it runs at you? (al la Tales of Symphonia)
Just a thought of mine: The ground, streets and tiles all look great, so, just a thought, what do you think about tanning the grass as if some were dried(or browned from heat), some tiles look a little worn, etc.

Just some thoughts, very nice looking game. Care to post the beginning of the story for a refresher? http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_yes.gif

I used to use RPG Maker 2003, but the sound stopped working, so I moved on to the more advanced RPG Maker XP. It looks much nicer.

It is pretty basic and straightforeward. Mostly just point and click. All you need it RPG Maker XP.

Battles, are they random, or do you see the monster and you attack it and/or it runs at you? (al la Tales of Symphonia)

You can adjust the encounter rate for random battles. Only if you use sprites would you see the monsters before the fight. Kinda like the bosses in my game.

Just a thought of mine: The ground, streets and tiles all look great, so, just a thought, what do you think about tanning the grass as if some were dried(or browned from heat), some tiles look a little worn, etc.

They give you set things, so i work with what I am given at the moment before I import other things. But, in the plains in front of the city there is a lot of dried grassland.

You put more work into the program then I ever did. Only made a few maps myself. Usually when I get to setting event properties to stuff I bum out and don't feel like doing it.

AlexCraig
Jan 28, 2008, 09:01 PM
Maps are just part of it all in the end. It is what you put on them which makes them awesome. The city, Fallas, is something I have been putting a lot of effort in, but I also thought "what sorts of things do I want in that city?" So I added a bar, an inn, item/weapon/armor shops, a bank, and various street shops. Hell, I made it so that you cannot access the weapon shop until later on in the game.

you write dialogue for each character as well as changes in games by setting up "events." For the most part it works like an on/off thing. If the character achieves something specific, it activates a switch to on to cause a change.

However, (I'm pretty sure it's the XP one) there is a scriptor applet included incase you really do want to build something entirely from code.

Yeah, that's what I figured. I'll start working on the storyline, as soon as I can see what's on the program, what I can use/work with, effects, so that I won't do anything rediculous.

Another thought struck me. Can you import sprites?

Yes, but they have to be in the format the sprites in-game are in. You'll know when you export sprites.

Well, after a quick look through(and I mean VERY quick) I shouldn't have much of a problem coming up with a storyline.
Whew, it looks like a lot of work, but I think it'll be great! It would be my first video game!

Whoa, too far ahead. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif Start off basic man. Alright, I'ma getting off for tonight, prolly update tomorrow, might even have a website.

Graphics, style, combat, certain ways to make events, etc. They're similar, but vastly different. XP is more complicated, but more worth it.

Summary of the beginning of my game:

A group of friends set sail to the continent of Balset. Their old hometown was too hard-up and dictatorial. Several weeks pass, and soon Balset was on the horizon. But their docking was not to be. For from the sky, a great red serpentine dragon bore down on their ship. Though they fought valiantly, the group failed and their ship was dessimated.

A few days later, one young man from the group named Alex woke up on a sandy shore. He was alone and lost. He called out for his friends, but no response. Picking up his sword, he traversed to find the nearest town to find his friends.

And so the story begins...

I'm just glad a lot of people like this. That, and my game is going very well. It makes me happy knowing other people are enjoying it/considering DLing it. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

just wondering, do you have list of names of all the characters that appeared in the game? That would be a nice list that i wanted to see.

only one female character? Unless Kian is also female. It's a great start though. If you continue on, your skill will be improve and make another better game, i presumed.

XDD I only had one female friend I keep constant contact with. I would have more, but I have so few female friends.

it doesnt have to be a person you know in real life. :E You can always make up a character and let him/her play his/her role. Try to create an originality type of character.

I wanted this game's PCs to be people I know in real life/over internet. Not made up people. I'll save that for the sequal if I do that http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif
