I'm trying to get a friend into playing PSU, and she wants to be a sort of spell casting character. Of course, this would be some sort of techer, but I have no experience as one so I can't help her and coach her through runs, etc. Any tips such as to what techs are accepted by groups or are good in general would be greatly appreciated.

All the technics are useful really. Generally I find that dam spells are better for Ft and ra and gi spells can be put to good use as AT, and if you have dam you can skip out on getting one of those 2 spells, as dam really can take care of almost anything, and mana consumption really limits your use between these spells. Foie and Diga are a must, as they're good single enemy spells. I would NOT recommend spamming these PAs over area technics. Most people pick up single spells because of the high damage and end up being weak in aoe when they're higher in lvl. Aoe spells are Not weak, and it's easier to level them at lower levels. Try to level all your spells, or add in ra or dam, instead of spamming Diga. Of course if your friend picks wartecher I have no experience in this field =D.
Example sets of spells may be:
Fortetecher
Foie, damfoie, rafoie, gifoie
Barta, Dambarta, Gibarta, Deband
Razonde(Noszonde if you want), zonde, gizonde, zodieel
Diga, damdiga(or nosdiga, too high energy consumption for both), radiga, and gidiga
resta, reverser, retier, (giresta 99 frags)
Acrotecher
Foie, rafoie(swap with gifoie)
barta(swap with rabarta),gibarta
Any combination of zonde, razonde, gizonde, and noszonde
Diga, radiga, gidiga
Ramegid, dammegid

Either way you should always have the 4 buff spells, they will help you out if no 1 else. The debuffs are always optional, up to your style of play. It is a good idea to have resta and reverser, comes in handy, but is not necessary if you have antimates and giresta. I have 4 spells for fortetecher because of rod usage, feel free to ignore the list if your friend does not care about elemental boosts. Most people have a buff rod, but my set is usually like this.
Fortetecher
Foie, rafoie, gifoie, shifta
barta, dambarta, gibarta, deband
Zonde, razonde, Gizonde, Zodial
Diga, radiga, gidiga, Nosdiga
Madog-Resta, reverser/Wand-resta(giresta), retier
Megid, ramegid, dammegid, megiverse
*Dark spells were not included in other set because most of them require PA fragments.
I'm currently acrotecher right now and I just use the spells I haven't lvled up yet =D
Also if your friend just wants to cast spells go fortetecher to get the most out of it, acrotecher would be recommended to get SOME melee power too.

For FT...

I would suggest gizonde, as a FT you wont be surrounded often (hopefully) but if you are its nice to have that aoe shock around you.

Dambarta is awesome, its range starts short but past 11 its much more bearable and just gets better.

Ra- spells at 31+ do great damage and hit 4 targets, but can be lengthy to lvl so I suggest only taking one or two originally

Foie and diga are both very good, diga will ahve a 10% extra tp mod but foie has burn se, I suggest leveling them both, they level easy as well.

Theres alot more useful then that, but thats about barebones as I can put it off the top of my head. Theres always AT too for more support then damage, but I don't feel I have enough experience with it to say much on it so I'll let others cover it.

If i had access to all 34 spells and i had the $ to buy them all if i was new and lvl one ForteTecher i would buy;

BASICS;
-Foie - super powerful direct one hit Fireball
-DamuBarta - close range damage and Freezing Enemies
-RaZonde - for 3 hits Shock and good damage
-honestly - Gidiga - its so powerful hits in a circle and levels very slow so start early.
-RaMegid - trust me - its very good and hits 3 targets for darkness confusion damage.

Once those are at least lvl 11 I'd go with the Intermediate;
-DamuFoie - lvl 3 burn at close range can light entire squads
-RaBarta - medium range lvl 3 Freeze for pesky fire monsters.
-Gizonde - shock all around lands pretty decently.
-Diga - Because it levels so fast and so powerful get it later hehe. Diga kills so quick early on you never really level it well till later.
-DamuMegid - oh yes its a good spell. Level 3 infection is no joke on fire resistant monsters or those damn dinosaurs in moatoob.

Now that those are lvl 11 the first stuff is near 21 right? Okay so the advanced are;
-RaFoie - lvl 3 burn from safety.
-Gibarta - lvl 3 freeze all around
-Noszonde - a cheap lvl 3 shock homing blast
-Nosdiga - the most powerful tech spell - 3 shots homing, lvl 2 stun each hit at point black to even directly behind you - its near HAX i say!
-Megid - if you got the pa frags get it not for the insta-kill but for the insane 1000+ damage to 6 targets in a line.

Alot of good advice has been alredy so i'll throw in just a few common sense tips for would be techers. Remember techers are generally backline fighters. Sometimes i'm amazed to see techers go out to the frontlines just to become a liability to the group. Be versatile. A good techer is one who can attk and their support. It does take time to learn how to swap stuff to be proficient but experience will help with that. Work with all your strengths. Sometimes you can work around weakness by using sumthin thats not a tech (for instance Fortetecher get lv 30 bullets on sum stuff). Stick to a few techs early on to get them to high lvs then alternate lving them. These are a few tips to get proficient at teching. Look to guides and threads also to get the knowledge of how everything works.

Ra- TECHNICs at 31+ on a rod absolutely dominate an AT.

well there's nothing AT can do about that now is there. There strongest point is their speed. Why do I say choose ra and gi spell, because with the casting speed, you WILL keep enemies in stun lock.

I used to think being a techer was hard at first. But it's alot of fun. The advices you see from above are pretty much right on the money. But you should really get the important spells. Resta, Reverser, Giresta, and all four of your buffs for your team. When I first started, I pretty much stayed on the sidelines and was ready to heal when I had to. But now I'm one of those crazy techers who will go for broke as if I were a Fighgunner. But if you ever need help in game on the ways of the "Force" look me up. My name in game is Rhea, I play on the ps2. So if you play on the pc or ps2 servers, just ask anyone if they know me. I'll be happy to even show you HOW to level your techs. I hope we all were a great help to you. Good luck ^_^
