Wierd name highlighting

Why is my friend's name highlighted like that?

You selected him via the auto-follow function.

press I or K to change it.

If you are using a game pad to play pressing up or down on the D-pad part of it selects a person like that, then pressing left will set the auto-follow option to whomever is highlighted. You should also see a green arc line connecting you to whomever is highlighted for a few seconds.
