Why are Chancellors, in 99% of cases, completely evil, traitorous, backstabbing jerks?

I mean, the only instance I can think wherein a chancellor was NOT evil was the one in Figaro Castle on FFVI.

Chancellors are the butlers of the political hierarchy. They use the position to get close to the head, and then BAM!

They wait for their chance. It's a really convenient plot-device, really.

Somewhat like the Spiky-Haired Protagonist, Tomboyish Female Childhood Friend, Spunky Princess, or Quiet Healer. Ah, and we mustn't forget the Floating, Fuzzy, Squeaky-Voiced Animal Companion.

ALL of those animal companions must be cleansed. If I see that damned fuzzball ONE more time...

Pretty much standard fare for fantasy RPGs. Got to have them for iconic purposes.
