Yes, if it's backwards compatible. Mine is, and it plays just as well. There are some issues with memory, apparently, but it's only a matter of entering your log in details or not.

I will warn you that the offline mode of AOI doesn't work if you are using a virtual ps2 memory card on the PS3. My sister and I had a big problem with that and she only plays offline PSU, so the PS3 became useless for her in that sense.

Just giving you fair warning. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

It varies what type of PS3 you are using to be able to play backward compatible games.

40/20G wont.
80G not sure
60G is perfect for it.

It works, just have to keep trying to load your data, which is annoying but works.

Also, I got 80 GB; PSU works on it. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

Same here. 80gb.
It does get annoying when you have to hit 'Retry' like 10 times before getting to the SEGA screen...
But sometimes, its in a good mood and loads without a problem

Hold on, I just want to make sure. If you have an 80gb PS3 and you want to make a virtual memory card for the PS2 while playing the PS3 you can actually do so? You just have to try it about 10 times? Or do you mean the log in data and your password data for online PSU. I just want to make sure folks.

No. Making the virtual memory card isn't a problem at all. Its when you load the game up sometimes it fails to read the 'memory card'. Which you can either hit 'yes' to continue without loading memory card or keep hitting 'retry' until it loads the memory card. If you hit 'yes' at the screen, you will then have to manually enter your PSU-ID and password;which only take like 3 seconds.

I have a 60GB PS3 and have zero problems playing the game online. I would recommend getting a 60GB PS3 if you can find one, they are the best for backwards compatibility (until Sony puts out yet another BC software upgrade, if they decide to do one...).

I have a 20 gig ps3 and it works, it is backwards compatible

Believe me all ps3's are backwards compatible, the size of the hard drive doesnt determine backwards compatibilty. I play on my ps3 almost everyday and have absolutly no problems whatsoever and i have a 20 gig ps3 which i got within the first month the ps3 came out.

They don't sell the 20 GB one anymore, and I've heard a rumor that the new 40 GB ones aren't backwards compatible with PS2 games. Dunno if it's true though.

The more recent PS3s (40Gb)are not backward compatible as they have had thier Emotion engine chip(PS2 hardware chip) removed to reduce production costs. The US 20Gb and 60Gb PS3 both had the Emotion chip, the 80Gb version which was released more recently did not but it used software emulation for PS2 backward compatibility. The newer 40Gb version doesn't have either so it cannot play PS2 games.

I can confirm:

20gb PS3: B/C Enabled (AoI will work); However, production has been ceased for a long while now. <<Opinion: Hard to find, small HDD - Don't bother>>

40gb PS3: B/C NOT Enabled (AoI won't work) <<Opinion: a big NO-NO!>>

60gb PS3: B/C Enabled; Older models include the EE chip, however newer 60gb models use software emulation - very difficult to find older models <<Opinion: A definite yes>>

80gb PS3: B/C Enabled; Uses software emulation <<Opinion: Toss up between this and the 60gb model, whichever is the best value for money>>

So you should be looking for either a 60GB or a 80GB

Emotion Engine. The main CPU found on Playstation 2.

Alos on the matter of Ps3's. Good luck finding a 60 or a 80 Gig.
Word has it (thanks to a recent GameStop Conferece call I listened in and read emails about)
The 80 gigs are discontinued.
Rumor has it the Sony Wants to release a 120 Gig unit thats Bundled with the Upcoming Dual Shock 3 Controller.
Let's just hope its not more than 5 Ben Franklins..

But if you can spot a Used or Refurbished 60 gig.
Scoop it up.
80 gigs are nice.
40's...ehhhhhhhhhhh Spideman 3 on Blu-ray anyone?

Do you know if the new 120gb are going to be software emulated ps2 backwards compatable?

I know it works, but I can't get it to save to the Virtual Memory card. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

This is when I start a new save altogether by the way. It keeps saying that I need to format the memory card and when I do, it tells me to format it again... It's no good playing offline mode when I can't save it to the Virtual Memory card.

Has anyone tried using the PS2 memory card adapter that is sold separately? I wonder if that will solve the problem of bad loading and reformatting

EDIT: have you tried deleting the virtual memory card and making a new one? I had the same problem and that solved it for awhile. If it gets messed up again, just make a new virtual memory card and copy the PSU files from the old virtual memory card.

There is reason why they strip the backward capatibility is to make room for Ps3 games. Probably won't have backward caability on 120gig

Yeah most likely they won't have it. It wiil most likely be the same deal like the 80 Gig. but at this point with sony we never know.
(So many were dissatisfied with the 40 Gig....believe me. I heard it...)

i know that the 40GB doesnt have BC and that the software emulation BC isnt the greatest, but i fully believe that within a year Sony will release new software emulation in a firmware update for (for all PS3 versions) that is as good as having the EE.

Dunno about that last part. But that would be awsome if they did.
I think crackers will make a better emulator (&firmware) before Sony does lol

When it fails to load (which it does a lot) simply keep hitting 'Retry' until successfully loads. On average it takes about 7 Retries for me, so that should help with your problem.
