View Full Version : Who here has actually played PSO?

I find it alarming the amount of people who aren't aware of things from PSO, so I figured I'd ask the board who's from PSO.

I am, myself-played on GC, Ep3, and BB.

PSO v.1 and v.2 on DC (I imported), then switched to PSO Ep II and Ep III (crappy card battle) on GC. I played BB for a few weeks when it had the first free public beta, but quit that because I had already played those levels over and over again on GC and DC, and never did have time to pick it up later to play Ep 4. I never did XBox PSO because at the time there was no high speed internet in my area to support XBox live (and by the time high speed internet did come to my area, a few of my old PSO friends had experienced the Endless Xmas on Xbox, and I refused to play it on Xbox for that reason).

Edit: Dear gawd, I just looked at my "join PSOW date"--2001!!!!

I started on Gamecube PSO Ep I/II, and got several 100+ characters (Highest was 164- I still have the save file)
Then played through Episode III.
Then played Blue Burst, got several 100+ characters again, as well as finally hitting 200.

Probably played for 4 years or so, I guess.

- I actually bought a Gamecube solely for PSO, after playing it for about 3 hours round a friend's house.

PSI, PSII, PSIII, PSIV, PSO-GC, PSO-Ep3

(Yeah, in spite of only being 20 - when I first caught on to the series at PSO-Ep3, I went back and got my hands on copies of the earlier games.)

Part of the appearance that so few people seem to know anything about PSO comes from the fact that some people on this board assume that those with recent join dates don't know much about PSO.

I've had someone before, in a "What weps do you want to see in the game?" topic, following my comment that scythe + minigun / chaingun would make the KOS-MOS clone players ecstatic, say "Scythe was in PSO, you know."

Yeah, I knew that. You only see one being used in the first Hunter's Guild mission, for heaven's sake! What the hell did that have to do with "scythe + minigun = happy clone players?" I made a perfectly legit comment, and some asshat assumes that I didn't know scythes were in PSO.

I own and played these PSO games.

Dreamcast PSO v1. Japanese.
Dreamcast PSO v1. US Release.
Dreamcast PSO v2.

Xbox PSO Episode 1 and 2.
Gamecube PSO Episode 3.

However, for all the time I played, I'm unaware of lots of rares in PSO. I wasn't exactly collecting a bunch of rares in the game, but I got what I saw; and many I never seen.

Kind of. Once or twice, offline, with a friend. I don't think it matters much since the games are so different. In fact, the only real difference between a "PSO vet" and a new to PS player is that a "new" player won't feel all the nostalgia.

"Alarmed" at how many people never played PSO? That's a little much, don't you think? Contrary to popular opinion, you do not need to have played PSO to fully appreciate and enjoy PSU as the two titles (other than superficial name and design elements) are not related. I never even knew PSO existed before I came to these forums to read about PSU, and I'm by no means a 'late bloomer' or 'too young' gamer. PSO just wasn't that popular.

I don't go around my FFXI forums being 'alarmed' if not enough people played FFX prior to picking up FFXI. Cheers to you if you're some kind of PS series veteran, but in reality PSU is an even playing field, and your ability/levels in other games really do not matter.

In before "Don't call R-mags and TECH mags 'Mags', you might offend a veteran PSO player!!1!1!1!!1"

Actually it was. Keep in mind, PSO was the first online console-based game. Just because you didn't hear of it doesn't mean it wasn't popular. But of course, compared to actual popular games NOWadays, it wasn't. What is WoW up to now, ten million?

Compared to now, no, it wasn't popular. When it first came out and for two to three years after? Yes, it very much was.

PSO just wasn't that popular.

PSO was more popular than PSU, in terms of both copies sold and online population. It also recieved much more critical acclaim and higher review scores.

Sonic Team seems to think so too, as AoI is jam packed with PSO content.

At least from my experience, people either never heard of PSO or remember it fondly. On the subject of PSU they either never heard of PSU - or they mock it.

At least from my experience, people either never heard of PSO or remember it fondly. On the subject of PSU they either never heard of PSU - or they mock it.

And yet for it being so popular, I never heard a word about it from anyone other than 'You can play some cute clown girls in space'. I'd never even played a PS game and PSU came highly recommended to me from some other gamer friends of mine who knew I was looking for a more casual MMO experience than the very intensive and hardcore FFXI. PSO may be remembered fondly by the people who played it, but it hardly matters anymore except as a way to pump nostalgia items into PSU to keep attrition down from the older playerbase. Again-- you don't have to have played PSO to be good at PSU, and it's better that way. PSO has no impact on the present game except 'gimme' stages, spell names and references.

So yeah, I'd say PSU has a lot more mainstream appeal, if even total strangers to the PS series are hearing of it and trying it. Also, comparing the popularity and population of PSO to PSU is kind of a flawed argument-- Just HOW many MMOs did PSO have to compete with back in the day? How many does PSU have to compete with -now-? The MMO world has changed a lot since PSO roamed the earth, and what might have seemed like an excellent game back then would probably be judged much more harshly now.

Sadly, the future of PSU and other PS online games is not going to depend on the series die-hards and throwbacks-- it's going to depend on the new people and the introductees to the series-- I.E. the 'n00bs'.

Sorry, but this game and future ventures made by Sega need us new people, and they know it.

I played the best of times DREAMCAST MAN!...dreamcast. Everything else xbox, and Blue Burst was just icing on the cake.

I played ep.1 and 2 for the gamecube I only played online for about a day before all my stuff got deleted. I just recreated all of my characters and now i'm at a higher level and have more rare stuff than before so I don't care I had to start over. I wanted to play BB but I could never find it anywhere.

I played PSO Ep1 and Ep2, on Dreamcast and Gamecube. I used to come here for item drops but never registered until now. If i hadn't have played them i doubt i'd even be aware of PSU's existance.

After 6years of PSO/U every day, i'm taking a much earned break, i'll pick up AOI someday!

Man, me and Sierra almost cried when you said your taking a break lol. Hoping that break is going well dude, the gang isn't the same without you. We've found a shit load of stuff you should catch up on with us.

On topic: Yeah, I started PSO from the GC. Didn't go online with it tho.

-Raises hand- I have. Speaking of, I received two PMs around the same time about two-three months ago both from different people asking about a certain item I had on PSOGC. I found it strange, yet nice to know I was remembered for that item.

I would have hated this game were it not for PSO.

Also, comparing the popularity and population of PSO to PSU is kind of a flawed argument-- Just HOW many MMOs did PSO have to compete with back in the day?

EverQuest, Ultima Online, Diablo, Dark Ages of Camelot, Monster Hunter, The various PS2 EQ's, etc. Yes, there is more competition now. So what? What you're basically saying is that PSO was only remembered fondly and had a higher population because it was decent only in terms of it's available competition. However, it's not the competitions fault that PSU is doing poorly in the west. It's Sonic Team's fault for making PSU unable to stand up in the contemporary MMO market. And that is kind of the core of the point. PSO was a better game in relation to it's age and available competition than PSU is. If it were to be released today in v.1 format, it'd flop even harder than PSU.

You are right in that the series needs to expand and draw in new customers. That's fine. But PSU is NOT doing that. Maybe a few here and there, like you, but not like it needs to be to make the series a decent contender in the MMO/ORP marketplace. And so, it's fanbase consists mainly of those who are either longtime fans of the series or fans of PSO. And as I said, Sonic Team knows this. Which is why they are pandering so hard to them.

I understand that the series needs change to grow, but change does not equal success nor does it equal quality.

Of course 99% of the players were PSO players....How could it be otherwise?

Sega doesn't advertise their fucking games anymore. Unless its one of those shit-ass sonic titles.
