The civil war was started so the JFK would be assasinated and we'd use the atomic bomb on Japan.

JFK was assassinated by his future self. because Dave Lister accidentally knocked that dude who was supposed to assassinated him out of the window of the book depositary. JFK had to be assassinated because he was expelled from office because of his love affairs and i think it was Hoover who took over. but the mafia where blackmailing Hoover with pictures they had of him at a orgy. this allowed Cuba to set up nuclear missile silos. fear of a nuclear attack caused every one to leave America and the soviets won the space race meaning that the space corps where never established which also meant red dwarf didn't exist for Lister and his crew to return to.
