View Full Version : PSU-XBox 360: Why exactly does this game cost $10/month on X

I understand that most online RPGs have monthly fees to pay for the servers and etc, but by this game being on XBox Live, doesn't Microsoft take care of most of that?

So what's the $10/month going to exactly?

Care, and maintenance of the gold plated hamster cage at Sega HQ.

Sega does almost all of the maintainence. Besides you don't need to pay for Xbox Live to play PSU.

It doesnt run on XBL servers I don't think, which is y u dont need to pay for XBL for it.

But u do need to be signed on to XBL to go online for some reason lol

So yes your paying for the servers and server maintenance and everything else that comes with an online game.

Then why is it separated from the PC and PS2 versions?

Well XBL is simply being connected to online. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif You can have silver membership and hide as offline and you can consider yourself to be not connected to XBL. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

They wanted to be able to use the XBOX live only features, which they couldn't use in FF11 because of the joined servers?

Like what? Excuse my lack of knowledge about FF11--I've never played it.

You're playing on Sega's server, not using another person's 360 as the "host."

Into Sega's pockets. God forbid they actually use it to make playing PSU tolerable.

The question should be "Why exactly does this game cost $10/month?"

On an unrelated note, I'm wondering why Xbox Live costs money anyway; it's not that much better than the free PlayStation Network.

Because people will pay the 4.50 or whatever it costs a month to play on XBL. The question is, considering that XBL as a service uses far more bandwidth and receives far more care and updating than PSU does - why is PSU more expensive than XBL?

Have you been on the free 360 demo lately? If Live/PSU didn't charge, all of these asshats would be in the games. For me, the $50/year for Live is worth it if only to keep the spammers out. In a free system, you can have people do whatever they want without any penalty for it, i.e. Get banned? Start a new account. It's free anyway!!

If it is so intolerable, don't play. Pretty simple. Would you like to put the moderate maintenance into a game and NOT get paid for it? I think ST has been pretty good with PSU lately. Of course they keep screwing up the updates, BUT they are trying. In regards to the OP, what merits the $10 a month is because thats what ST asked for, for YOU to play THEIR game. Easy huh?

I'd like to believe that Sega is buying the servers qualified care-takers. They'll show up soon, right?

...On a different note, what's with all the irritable people here on the forums? They seem to be all over the place.

If you don't wanna play 10 bucks a month then go play the demo it's free with a gold account.

Cutting your wrists is free to, but I wouldn't recommend that to anyone.

What was it Yoda said? Do or Do not. There is no try. These guys are in buisness, to make YOUR money. If you don't mind the sloppy manner in which they're handling their servers/updates/customer support - that's fine. But coddling them and regarding them as you would a bumbling child taking their first steps is just lunacy imo. They may be in the business of fun and games, but they ARE in business. There is no "A for effort", and if Sega doesn't get their shit together - it's not going to get much better for them in the marketplace.

I can live with the botched updates and poor support. But I'm not going to pat their hand and tell them it's all right everytime they shit their pants before making it to the bathroom.

SEGA's game quality has been sliding as of late, and if they wish for me to continue buying their software, they're going to have to get their act together.

Like Sinue said, giving them a pat on the back every time they press the wrong button isn't going to fix anything. There will come a time when a Rollback won't fix the problem, and then they'll be buggered.

I...don't get it.

Unless you're referring to my use of "buggered" instead of a more customary "fucked." I'm attempting to cut down on how much I swear. I also couldn't think of a metaphor as amusing as Sinue's.

Oh oh! There's another free game I know of, it's called Russian Roulette! Except instead of leaving one chamber empty, don't leave any! Pretty fun eh?! Go play that!

$9.99 does seem a bit much, but I look at it this way. I loved PSO and I love PSU. And after PSU has run it's course I want a new online PS game. I suppose PSU did pretty well in Japan but you could probably say it flat out bombed here (US). They're not going to make another game unless it's profitable to do so. And if this game was free I guarantee they wouldn't have made enough money from game sales to justify a sequel...but I bet they've made a good profit from the monthly fee. So, if it means I'll get a new game down the road, I'll gladly pitch in a measly $10 a month http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif
