View Full Version : Female Gamers on Xbox Live

Why is it, when in ANY game if a female is in it most men feel the need to make themself feel and seem masculin by talkin smack to the female gamer? As a female gamer myself I often wonder this, I play many games on live and believe me I hear the same remarks over and over and over. "Hey little d00d when are your balls going to drop" or "hey baby wanna hook up?" or the most infamous one of all "Your a chick who plays video games man you must be huge and ugly". Srsly guys FTW is it? Are you threatend by female gamers. Do you think you look cool in front of your friends? To be honest with you the only reason i started playing games within the last year is because my fiance got me into them and i actually enjoy them. But ppl like that on XBL ruin it sometimes. So what is your views on it? guys and girls alike???

Guys want to think that Video Games are only for guys. When their territory is encroached upon they will try one of two tactics: 1) Try to drive female away by being offensive in order to return things to normal, or 2) Try to impress said female by whipping out is e-peen. A large number of the gamers on LIVE are those fat-headed macho types who never got hugged enough when they were little. But that's just my opinion as one of the exceptions to that rule, I just treat everyone alike whether they be male or female, probably stemming from the fact that I was raised in a house where the females outnumbered the males, and the head of the household was basically my grandmother, but that whole jazz is for some other topic.

You got it wrong! D:

Personally I treat my female online friends exactly the same as I treat my male online friends, they have the same right to be there as any male gamer, so I treat them as such.

People want to look cool in front of their e-friends? Generally thats it from what I've seen. The types of comments you hear like that are pretty stupid... yet I honestly laugh at it sometimes. People enjoy the anonymity (sp?) of the internet where they can say whatever they want without getting harmed. Look at the community of halo lol.

Yeah... racism, sexism or whateverelse-ism is pretty stupid yet there's not much you can actually do.

Good question, but I've never actually witnessed major offenses first-hand (though have heard other female players reporting this).
Most of the people I play with don't care......it's a total non-issue (female gamers are regulars).
I suppose the standard recommendation ought to be given - find a regular set of players to game with, and avoid the risk of running with random retards..

Course, some of these guys might actually mistake a female player for another guy (no way - you have to be a dude fakin' a girl's voice).....this I have seen (it was an honest mistake, and the offender apologized).

But then are you any better than them in that case? No, I don't think so. *looks up omegapirate2k's information*

But yeah, people in general can just be really, really stupid.

The MAIN game I experience this on is mostly first person shooter games like CoD4 and Battlefield 2....As for the Whipping out of the E-Peens im rdy to whip out the E-B00bs and knock them all the hell out lol jkjk

Pack mentallity; guys want to show off and don't want to be dominated in a public setting by others. The less tactful(much like those on LIVE) are much more open to voice themselves; loud and obnoxiously. Whether its regarding sexuality, gender, nationality, race; people don't care as long as they feel bigger than the next person.

Put downs, trash talk, etc. For the most part I don't even bother using a mic on LIVE, and I usually have everyone else muted as a standard.

It's worse when the guys get all goo-goo ga-ga over them. I get my ass kicked and I kick ass, regardless of gender. It's seriously irritating when I need to play at a handicap level because the guys on the other team will boot me if I kill the girl. Several times in Gears I've killed the entire team, and am then forced to let the girl gamer kill me to avoid being booted. Most of the time they play right into it too.

It's irritating. We all play games, we shouldn't have different rules to follow.

On a FPS? It isn't really surprising to me at all. Most trash talking happens there anyways... also pics of this E-b00b event happening pl0x http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif

That there seems to be the problem. FPSs seem to make people even dumber than usual, myself included.

Immaturity. I've met ppl on live that can carry on a civil conversation, and are more or less 'normal', regardless of gender (or age for that matter), and have also heard absolutely asinine ramblings from others (also, irregardless of age/gender).

As far as boys rambling, some are inexperienced talking to girls (you can tell fairly quickly), some biding to be the "alpha male" (or pack mentality as Abdur mentioned) among the group, some are doing it just to get a reaction, and the more you show it bugs you, the more they push, some are just asshats, knowing they are more or less anonymous online and can get away with whatever they please.

With random parties, you never know what to expect. I've met both a-holes, and friends gaming online. But I would have never made some of those friends without being willing to join a random group every now and again.

My advice would be to just ignore or blow off the idiots, and focus more on enjoying the game, and partying with like minded people / friends.

Yes. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

Honestly, I could care less about what gender/non-gender/transgender/multigender you are. As long as you do your job on the team, or at least make a solid effort, it's all gravy.

Tho a word of warning. Never play Uno with my friend Grandpa Rabbit. He's a good dude, don't get me wrong, but you WILL end up showing your boobs to him. Guanteed. I dunno how he does it. He's got more female gamers on his friends list than anyone else I've come across, and they're virtually all from his Uno Harem.

I really do dislike the treatment of females in videogames. Some try to impress them, others treat them like junk. I myself have a natural tendancy to treat females with more respect than usual, but I try to get into a gender annonomous mentality when online and treat each individual based on how much I respect them. Female gamers may have a different mentality of gaming, but there's no reason to treat them any differently.

They're called cam-whores for a reason. He gives them attention which they like, and they play him for it in return of afew glimpses of boob.

There was a classic Ctrl-Alt-Del comic strip that says Normal person + Internet anonymity = Total fuckwad. Xbox Live hasn't changed any of that. Actually, it's proof that any dumbass can get a credit card these days.

The only difference in the way I act when I know females are around is that I won't say "bitch." Most don't seem to care either way, but I was raised in a community where calling a girl a bitch was a good way to end up losing a few teeth. And yes, strangely enough, I act the same on the internet as I do off of it.

Essentially speaking, it lends itself to be uncomfortably true in many circumstances. There are those of us who have enough self-respect to not fall victim to it, just as there are those who are the end result without the shown prerequisites.

Personally, I just refrain from foul language around women. In a general sense, I stay away from such uncouth language overall - it's pretty unbecoming, especially since, as of late, I don't really have much to be so angry about.

Another point, however, would be that Xbox Live is dominated by male gamers from 12 to 30-somethings, where there's all sorts of raging amounts of uncontrollable testosterone. This is one of the more key parts of the issue - and when combined with the above theory, it only gets worse.

So, yes, it is a problem, and yes, most male gamers will end up acting like this, simply due to testosterone levels, anonymity, and gargantuan egos. Not all of us are like that, though, and it's these types of people that I hate being generalized with as a gamer.

as far as Xbox live is concerned, unless it absolutely necessary to have mic on (and it's noramally not) I usually don't use it and mute the other people. I don't care who the other people, I just want them to SHUT UP AND PLAY.

OF COURSE ITS GONNA HAPPEN ON A FPS THAT WHERE TRASH TALKING IS IF YOU PLAY FPS AND USE A HEADSET BE PREPARED FOR IT MALE OR FEMALE

I saw these guys fighting over a girl in the casino today "she's mine!" "No, she said she's my Gf!" And they started getting really serious about it... I don't know if it was real or staged... But the "girl" turned out to not be a girl...

I don't use mics in FPS games because of the trash talking... funny thing though, if Laguna is playing COD4 and there is a female in the party, he goes out of his way to avoid shooting her. Like- he'll pass up 99/ 100 shots where shes just STANDING there, flirting on the mic instead of playing. It's annoying. As much as I hate guys who treat females differently, I hate females that make a big deal out of being girls more... like on the Rock Band forums, some chick actually made a thread about how she's hot, and that makes her special, because there aren't a lot of hot girls who play video games. The worst thing we can do as females is buy into THAT bs! Not all female gamers look like Trixie, mmm-kay? In fact, I'd say there are as many cute girls who game as there are ugly girls! Probably a higher proportion of good looking girls than good looking boys, ya think?

OK, I'm in for it now, probably...

well in terms of straight numbers, guys would have a higher chance just cause there are so many more. Ratio wise however, that could be a whole diffrent ball game http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

Yeah I mean ratio wise... I'd say a higher proportion of females who play are good looking- vs guys, of course. But then- good looking is different to everyone, isn't it? I remember playing FFXI with a guy who swore his gf was the hottest person alive... Everyone in the LS was dying of curiosity, and when he finally posted a picture on the LS forums, it was a let down after all the build up. But it was cute how he would swear that she was the most beautiful person that had ever lived... wonder if they're still together...

Odds are she found a slightly more attractive geek who thought she was a walking God. Insert restraining order, etc.

No, I haven't a clue. But I will agree that ratio wise, the number of good looking females to good looking males will most likely spike in favor of the females. Sadly, personality goes a long way in showing beauty, and if you're a stuck up bitch or an ignorant prick, thats all you're ever going to be regardless if you're 'hot' or not.

I kill indescriminately, but if you make a scene I'll make it a point to shoot you first as often as possible.

How do you think us guys feel every time we go into a game and there's a gamer girl in it? You know, the kind who prattles on non-stop about how she's a girl playing the vidya and uses her sex as the focal point for her taunts in the game (If I hear "How does it feel to get beat by a girl" one more time, I'm gonna cunt punt a bitch).

Though for the record; I don't like anyone who kills you and then brags about it, because 9/10 times I've already killed the same dood atleast four times just prior. If you're going to brag, do it when the match is over and we see the total scores.

And yeah, "lol, how it feel to be beat by a girl?". Well, pretty much the same as it does when I get beat by a guy...unless you think wimmen are less intelligent than men, then I guess it would be a milestone that you managed to button mash the 'fire' button and hit me enough times that I died?

I never understood that either. "How does it feel to be beat by a girl?"

Either you're insulting yourself by implying you don't win very much, or lacking in skill/intelligence, or you're implying that I'm a horrible player because I don't win 100% of the time.

In either case, it feels the same. I died. Boo-hoo.

the advantage women have in online play that they didn't have in arcade/tournament settings is being anonymous and sexless. what i mean by "advantage" is that we are no longer on-the-spot judged because of our sex. we are judged by our level of skill.

xbox live's little headset sort of puts a wrench in this, and it's going right back to the arcade days.

Ashlyn, there are quite a few females who have dealt with this in person, sometimes even dealing with physical harassment on top of verbal. it can be very discouraging, and i totally know how this shit can get under your skin, but keep in mind that guys do this to each other all the time. See it as "newb hazing" and focus on improving your skills in the game. don't let their BS get to your head, because that's exactly what they're trying to do. being a female automatically puts you in the "weak" category gaming wise. prove them wrong by staying level-headed and ignore the brash sexist comments. depending on the group, you can also respond with some of your own http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wink.gif

humor has always been my saving grace in these situations. it shows good sportsmanship.

if you find yourself dealing with pricks on xbox live and it gets out of hand, leave and find another group. i know it's a fucking pain to have to go from group to group until you find one that aren't made up of total pricks, but your goal should be to have fun and improve your skills with other players, not blow a fuse.

as of late, i've met both male and female "gamers" that i'd like to choke slam into a brick wall, and as you can see by the responses in this thread, it's not a gender thing.
it's a "stupid, immature people who can't handle anything outside their little tiny bubble of reality" thing.

That is completely true... the type of guy who would "haze" a woman would do the same to a kid, or an older person, or someone from another country... they always look for something to pick on to trash talk about. Boobs and a high pitched voice make women more obvious targets.

In our combined experience (Laguna's and mine, I mean) we have had VERY VERY VERY bad experiences with UK gamers more than US gamers. The only time I've been attacked verbally for being a woman was by English guys- and Laguna is constantly getting in srguments on COD4 with English dudes for some reason. They're always the ones that he kills 20 or 30 times, then they snipe him after someone else weakens him and start yelling "How do you like that, you bloody wanker? Not so great NOW are you?" He's like- "You really feel like we're equals in the game because you killed me once?" And then he goes out of his way to keep hunting them... and he's the best... so they die.

It sucks, being in Germany makes people in the UK much more comparable, connection wise, so we're stuck playing with them or lagging like a mother. Germany =/= modern technology. OMG they really don't.
