View Full Version : What's with all the skimpy female clothing?

furrypaws
Apr 2, 2008, 03:25 PM
Well, as I was playing on Shalo, an alt, I decided to go shopping for some clothes.

o_o.

There's one pair of shorts that's around the knees. Everything else are either shorts that are about as short as the undersuit or baggy swepants.

When I wanted to see if the shirts were any different, they weren't. It was either all the way up to the hands, a smock of some sort, or once again, as small as the undersuit.

Sega. We're not ALL perverts.

Is there any upgrade in clothing in the future, or am I just missing some of the clothing?

I dress my as-fat-as-possible newearl alt in the most revealing clothing possible, hoping to drive up popular demand for some less obnoxious outfits. Parkas, burkas, shawls, floor length veils, sweatpants, something...

Did you know that the Voloyal Set comes with a free tummy tuck? Equip it and *presto* flat-ish stomach no matter how round your character is normally.

yes the clothing for females are incredibly sexy and show off all the goods in all the right places. I mean this is an RPG. Skin Sells.

Ever play other Medieval style games where all male magicians must wear full on robes and Wizard hats BUT all the girls have to wear leather bikinis or Steel Bikinis or Fur bikinis in order to tap into the elements?

For PSU the BEST pair of pants i think are the PHANIS from parum. Its the low-cut skin tight jeans really shows off the hips and legs and bum especialy. But its tasteful and good to look at.

Another choice is the Neudaiz uhh... "Hakama-style" the pleated samurai baggy pants for girls. Has 2 slits cut in the hips for the Samurai Katana to fit through so there is some hip-skin showing but the bagginess looks comfortable.

and the Bombom Shorts from Moatoob are a nice too - an actual pair of shorts that goes near to the knee.

The real jeans from moatooab aren't really jeans but shorts with pant legs attached by garters its neat to look at shows off some thigh and its the 2nd best pair of pants in the game.

And thats about it. Everything else is the super short mini-skirt that flashes the goods with every movement OR a pair of hotpants which is the same problem when sitting down. Why did they include a FPS sit down camera anyway?

The boys version of the uh... overalls they wear are the baggy snow-boarding girl Storia outfit but its really unflattering. I like the idea of a snowbunny outfit but the way its rolled up in the back just doesn't look good.

LOL just wait until they release a version of HAL's Ulala Rip off newsCASTer outfit =X

I really don't mind the revealing clothing on PSU, but I do agree that it wouldn't hurt to have more of a variety on the game for everyone.

Gamers are mostly adolescent and young adult males; you can hardly blame them for catering to the demographic. And even so, there's a good amount of clothing options for those who'd like to dress more modestly. It's certainly not the majority, but it's not like they didn't try: Guardless, Hulana, AMF, Phanis, the choices are there.

The only "revealing" outfits are the Voloyal and Mikomiko sets. Everything else is eccentric at best.

Female CASTs though don't have much of a choice other than to be ho-bots. Gotta fulfill all those animu fantasies to please the playerbase.

I made a topic similar to this on the "official" PSU forums, and just about every post on it was dedicated to saying how much I failed at life.

Anyway, yes. The clothing selection is simply ridiculous. That's one of the perks I enjoy of being a caseal. Despite having the most over the top revealing outfits I've seen, they also have the most conservative outfits I've seen in a fantasy game for females. At least, I'm not flashing my bum (http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b77/Zorafin/Lev060624035844a.jpg) to everyone I pass.

I have 3 female characters and never ran into any revealing situation with clothing. There's choices of actual full length good looking pants (phanis and guardless are my favs). As for tops, unless you think a little midriff showing is revealing, then there's plenty of choices there too.

The point here is that people want more variety in the other direction.

At least caseals have good options for a fully-armored look.

By way of clothing I have no problems with my female characters being revealing, so of the clothes are really cute. Caseals have dirt choice on options though if you want to human-esque. Its either be on the revealing side or look like a 'chunky' model. I'm not a fan of much that the caseals can wear. Guys clothes also suck pretty hardcore. I really enjoy the medievil look but even it is kinda goofy..,.

I'd say about half the non-revealing stuff is almost useless except with its set. (And even then)

Pandaling
Apr 2, 2008, 08:35 PM
Oh and also, when it comes to gaming with full 3D characters, it is easier to make skin tight clothes as they will fit the model easier. Clothes that are larger and bulkier will need more modifiers to them (ie gravity/motion) to they won't looks stiff, etc.

For example, when a female wears a formal dress and moving around, the pixels in the front of the dress have to stretch to accommodate the movements (which in my opinion looks a funny).

Then you have to note that clothes are 'fitted' around the character so not all clothes will work well together or with weapons.

For example, the Miyabi-kata set. The sleeves cut into the body when you move.
Another example, the rappy suit. Weapons may randomly stick out of your 'wings' and when you walk your 'wings/arms' will meld with your body o_o;

The fact that how OP was so upset with the female clothing, and to go as far to share it with the rest of the world, makes me think that OP had some personal issure regarding to female characters in game...*cough* You thought it was a hot chick till you find out she was a man.* pwned

I know what you're saying, but you can make clothes that aren't revealing still follow the model. And I wouldn't imagine any real drastic measure are needed with, say, the little round thing on the back of the neck in the Pritia set. (Might be Phanis)

Offended isn't the word. It's more like annoyed. My fantasy is having a sad eyed female in heavy (or otherwise suitable) armor fighting against hoards of demons. The skin kind of distracts from that.

Hm, the discussion is starting to get suspiciously official forumy...

I never go to the official forums except when linked over to an announcement.

I do, however, recognize weak arguments when I see them, and the bit you quoted is pure gold. If I was debating someone and they said that... I'd almost burst out in laughter. (Can't exactly do that in a debate)

Simply put, that statement is completely and entirely irrelevant, because none of those games are part of the topic.

^ Same. I want more girly skirts and dresses.

And as I girl, I lawl'd at this thread. Guys!? Complaining about character clothes being too revealing? You'd think it'd be the girls upset. But as a female, I have no problem with the sexy outfits. It's just pixels - and even in real life, showing some leg or some cleavage is not some kind of sin. PSU is not the type of game where you'll find full body armor or old mideval costumes. Almost every other game features that, so I find PSU's clothing system a refreshing change. There is also a great variety in the style and type of clothes.

There are plenty of boyish and modest clothes; what this game really lacks are more things like the Maydi Suit. Feminine, soft, and pretty. I want more ribbons and lace!

From my experience, women either want to show off as much as possible, or be as cute as possible. At least, the ones that flaunt the fact that they're a woman. It's pretty rare to find one with that personality that makes a respectable character. So obviously it's the men or the more quiet women that complain about female clothing.

I also find it interesting that one of the supporting arguments for the flesh is "it's a fantasy game" when we're talking about modern styled clothing. This is the most realistic clothing I've seen in a fantasy game. Hell, I wish they'd get the Fantasy part right and give someone besides casts sci-fi outfits.

I personally love the Maydi suit - but keep in mind, I'm a girl. X3 I think it was more of an outfit that females would like, rather than males. (Just based on the frilly-ness factor.) I don't know of many guys who liked it, other than my gay friend, of course!

Also, Zorafim... what a sweeping generalization about women. I hope you're not one of those gamers who doesn't get out much and doesn't know a lot of "real" girls. Most women I know vary how they dress based on the day, weather, the event, or what happens to be in fashion at the moment. There are also myriads of more styles other than "cute" and "sexy", and women seldom stick to just one.

Careful. You're stereotyping your gender there. Not all women want to look cutesy. Though yes, it isn't something most males would enjoy having on them, though I would have enjoyed a nice looking maid outfit myself. if it was only less poofy...

Sidney
Apr 2, 2008, 10:44 PM
I'm not stereotyping - I'm just saying, that's just most likely an outfit girls would prefer moreso than guys. (Come on, this one's a shoo-in XDD) Generally, our tolerance for frills and lace is slightly higher, that's all.

Besides, I never said all women wanted to look cutesy. That'd be you coming to some kind of conclusion. :p

ya the clothes in PSU for the most part are actually good (save a few outfits but thats just my personal taste). the reason i liked SWG so much (before they effed it up) was that i can ware what ever i wanted and not face any penalty, until they implemented f-up part one (combat "upgrade" f-up part two was the so called New Game "Enhancements")

I think all of the Female clothes look cool, which is much more than I can say about the male clothes.. >_>

I'm still waiting for a robe type outfit so I can make my character as lazy and laidback as I am.

Personally, I don't see any problem with the clothing options PSU has. Sure, you have the outfits that make you look like an e-slut, but I see enough other options available to where you could cover yourself up decently without showing much skin.

I think the problem is some people want more clothing styles like medieval-style armor or something more akin to your traditional RPGs. But that would be so far outside the style PSU has already set for itself, it just wouldn't fit in this game.

Besides, PSU isn't the only game that has this problem. You look at almost any videogame, any genre, and if it has any female characters in it, either leading or supporting, they're either going to be "cute" or "sexy." Meaning it's either frills or skin. It's just how most games are designed. Blame the demographic.

Some of the flesh-female clothes look nice. Most of the female CAST parts bother the heck out of me, on the other hand. (Going down the list: Amorel, Bacolone, Batrelle, Jenkel and Lucarel especially) The PSU originals could use a texture update so that they can actually visually mesh with the AotI additions, too...

Actually, what I really don't like about the new AotI female CAST sets is the bizarre high-heels that they've got on the Bacolone, Jenkel and Lucarel. Valatine looks okay, but doesn't seem to go with anything else. Definitely waiting on HUcase parts. Tried and true, that style.

Actually, I kinda want sci-fi outfits. 'kinda looks like a fashion show with fleshy characters running around. Though I like the cast setup, there's more of that medieval stuff you're talking about than the sci-fi outfits often seen in Phantasy Star games.

Then again, I shouldn't even be discussing this. It's obvious what look ST wants for PSU. Looking at its visual arts, its story, its representations, its events, it's obviously catering to mainstream Japan. They want things as stereotyped and compacted as possible. That means, big robots, big swords, loud attacks, and skimpy women.
That kind of sounds like mainstream America, actually... Hell, that sounds like mainstream everything.

Well, I wasn't directing that towards you specifically but I would also like more sci-fi clothing too. PSU's style is more...futuristic urban anime? That didn't make a lot of sense but I never could quite describe what PSU was trying to go for with their clothing. That's why I never specified it in my last post. lol

I remember at first, I hated it because it didn't look like the type of clothing people would be fighting in but more like something you'd wear while walking down the fashion strip. I suppose it's grown on me now but I think some people still have that same complaint I did back during PSU launch.

But you made a good point. It's a very Japanese game and it's simply catering towards the mainstream audience.

It's easy to say you want sci-fi outfits, but what does that look like exactly? The advance of technology only has so much influence on clothing past a certain point. For example, jeans have been around about a century and a half now and they look pretty much the same way they did when they were introduced.

The wardrobe of the game should have a distinctly different feel from what we're familiar with, but that's a function of culture, not technology. And I think we have some varied designs as it is, along with the normal looking stuff like phanis. If someone walked by me on the street tomorrow wearing the Storia set, I'd certainly raise a WTF flag.

That, and the fact that your clothes melt onto your body from thin air is pretty bloody sci-fi if you ask me.

Maybe not so over-the-top, but something to that style. Just, something to get away with the hoodies and the tight jeans.
And yes, I am fully aware of the fact that sci-fi is synonymous with unnecessarily sexy females, and of the irony of bringing it into a topic pertaining to the large amount of sex in videogames.

I have no problem with most of the female clothes. Besides, everyone knows that in video games and anime, the less clothes a chick wears, the stronger she is. :3 That, and I like how the Voloyal Set makes my female character's boobs bigger (sorry, I like big boobs on women, deal with it). I just hate the fact that, if you want them REALLY big, you have to make your female character tall and fat, which just isn't sexy at all... fat gut negates full bewbs. >_<

If anything, give us better MALE clothes that don't look so frilly. That, and better male cast parts. *waits for Magashi's wings to be released...*

I have to fully aggree that a lot of the PSU clothes are to revealing. I wish they had more "battle like" clothes. Something like this:

This looks battle like. Click it! (http://www.pso-world.com/items/psu/8/2591/guardians_formal/)

Anyway, and saying girsl like to wear revealing outfits in real life too...is not a real argument. Because not every girl wants to. And I don't know whats so good about showing every human male in the world how your body looks :| uhm...but ok...this is going in a different direction...

I just would really like more clothes that look like you are about to go fighting. Not either going to a cute tea party, or into a strip club with your character D=

My issue with it is that so many users wear it that it gets boring to see in every other random party I join. Yeah, it's skimpy and revealing. I wouldn't put it on either of my fem characters, but the reason I hate it so much is because every other fem character wears one. (At least it seems that way...)

I agree, we need more style variety in the clothes department.
But I also thought why there's SO MANY mini short options is cause there's also so MANY stocking options as well.
And the Japanese are really into stockings/high boots ATM.

One must wear mini shorts/no shorts in order to wear the many styled stockings/high boots this game offers.
