I don't see any reason to assume the functionality is any different. Both are basically attaching a blade to the fist, really.

I'd like the first one, but to be able to summon it like in the second pic. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

note really, no. the one the dude is holding seems to have much more depth than the flat one photographed.

Well the top would be held in the hand thus allowing for a different range of movement than the bottom which is essentially attached to the forearm. The top allows for some more complex movements considering you still have some use of the wrist for moving it, while you lose some of that fluidity on the bottom one, again because it is attached to the forearm.

The one on the bottom IS his forearm. Also, the katar photographed lacks a hand-guard, which would make it and the lower image the same, really.

Good point. Now if the monkey on the katar actually did something we would have a whole new set of rules.

Katar: the official weapon of FKL.

Note: not really the official weapon, just everybody likes it now that we've seen it.
Also, green looks good on a blade. o:

Look up a pata, its the same thing, but sword length.

The Pata is very seksi indeed. O_O

no thanks. you can have your primitive rod, and you can even try to impress others as you swing it around in a martial artsy fartsy fashion, but you'll still get blown away by a submachine gun.

Er... rod? Katars are a variant of daggers.

Cheap ass. any monkey could pull a trigger.

Take SKILL to weild weapons such as these.

Well if you want to be fancy, but really if you just go to the basics of swinging and stabbing even a monkey could use them. And a chimpanzee could probably use them better.

Don't matter how much skill you have. You won't be walking around with a quarterstaff or a katar.

Randomness
Apr 7, 2008, 07:21 PM
Katars still look awesome though. And I'd imagine they're harder to knock out of someone's hand. And a pata would be pretty much impossible to break their grip on. (Guard goes up a bit onto arm, you'd have to break the arm first)

Sgt_Shligger
Apr 7, 2008, 07:32 PM
A pata wouldn't be a great idea because your movements are very restricted. You may not be disarmed but you also can't do a whole lot. Since you have no option for wrist bending, you'll only be able to pull off very linear slashes, chops, and stabs. You'd be better off with a longsword, something with the same kind of blade and weight but lacking in the massive handle. You can manipulate the blade much easier.

Randomness

True. The katar is probably better, since you can use some wrist movements with it.

I'd rather a katana. Or a staff, you could get away with that. in most places

Katanas aren't as exotic. Or unkown. But yeah, a nice solid wooden staff doesn't look like a weapon.

I rather like these:

Apparently they're based on a weapon from a movie, I've never seen it, but I actually have those daggers, they're quite nice.

Also you can't go wrong with a good old fashioned claymore.
