I know that it's probably a silly question to be asking in a forum that is packed with fans of the game, but i'm still not totally convinced by it. I downloaded the free Xbox live demo, and while I enjoy the brief gameplay i've seen so far, i'm just not fully convinced to pay the fee to get the full version.

So rather than play it on the Xbox, i'm considering the PC version. When I play RPG's online, I not only like to see good gameplay, but also a good community, one where I can actually take time out from endless grinding and talk to people and NOT be bored. This is obviously difficult on the Xbox 360 since you have to type everything in via the keypad with your controller.

So ruling out the Xbox: is it worth getting Phantasy Star Universe for the PC?

If so, tell me what good things I can expect. =D

Welcome to the community. The overall gameplay is the same. So play whichever version you like. Make friends here so you can get some help in game. ;]

Thanks for the welcome. I'd like to say that i'm a veteran, but i'd be lying; i've only ever extensively played Phantasy Star Online for the GC, and had a character up to about level 100... that was OFFLINE though. xD

Gameplay aside, perhaps you could tell me if people are at all social in game? Or if it's just a huge grindfest. =P Some of my best MMORPG memories are sitting in lobbys or main cities and chatting away. =P

It really depends on what your doing in the game. Most people who run missions generally talk during them, of course I play on the 360 so everyone I know has a headset. Also, you can always hook up a keyboard to your 360 if you want to type. The community however (Most of the time) people are pretty cool.

I thought about hooking up a keyboard, but then there's the problem of me posting messages in seconds and having to wait for a reply, which usually takes a while.

From what I gather in the demo, most of the chat involves random spamming of preset phrases, or: "Hello" "Want to do a run?" Or something along those lines. I understand there's the headset, but that involves having to be in a party. The ability to have a reasonable conversation with someone at any time is always a bonus in my books.

The Xbox demo is not like the real game at all... the real game is a hundred times better on either server. U cant go wrong with either server. If u want a larger community go with xbox, If u like a smaller community go with the PS2/PC server.

On 360 we have headsets that you can talk in you don't have to type anything if you don't want to...... we have a huge community. pc/ps2 has alot of people on these forums but they always say that there is no one on those servers anymore........

Beware though, the 360 community has many 9 year old pre pubescent immature asses

Like I said though, the headsets are only useful in a party, so there's little public interaction, if you know what I mean?

And while a community could be large, it doesn't necessarily mean it's a very good community. Which would you say has a better quality of player, personality-wise? XBox or PC/PS2?

I'm on PC/PS2, meaning it's better. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif lol jk

Anyways, it'd still be nice to see the PC/PS2 side grow, even with individuals. Both sides are good, both sides have disadvantages and advantages in general.
It's yur choice, though I'd prefer you to come to PC/PS2 anyways. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

edit:
Advantages I know of for PC/PS2:
- You can take screenshots
- You probably from your view can communicate better on PC
- You can do other things on the PC while playing easily, like sufring the internet and other stuff

Out of interest SeKai... would you say personally that the PC/PS2 servers may have less people on them, but they're generally nicer people? And obv, easier to talk to because you have a keyboard to chat with? =P

Cause I have no problem with small amounts of people, since I used to play on private Ragnarok servers, and they all tended to be more awesome because it was a more confined community.

I tend to stay away from the 360 version because from what I have gathered and experienced myself, it isn't often you'll find people levels 1-100 that are too serious about the game. Like I said in another post, you'll be running a mission and someone will come in your party and start spamming ( o )( o ) for like, 20 minutes straight.

I'm on the PC/PS2 version and I came from the 360 version looking for a better community. People on the PC/PS2 servers are actually serious about the game, and I think a lot of 360 people aren't (plus there's a way to play completely free on the 360 version). Most people on PS2/PC servers have capped characters, so people are so helpful and willing to do just about anything. The downside to PS2/PC is that we are very few-- meaning, we only generally run one mission: White Beast. And that is our grindfest. Of course if you make buddies, people are ALWAYS willing to go do other things, but White Beast yields the greatest amount of EXP for those who want to make it a grindfest.

Also, if you're on PS2/PC and are highly interested in the social aspect; the Casino is great at night (US times) and the White Beast lobby is so full of the silliest people. =) We had a pokemon raid just a little while ago!

Hope this helps!

I knew timezones were gonna freck things up. =/

So far it looks like the PC is winning though. I'll just need to get around to actually ordering a copy of the game as well as the expansion now. xD

yea just get PC version. it seems like the better choice for u at least.

it would be fun to show someone around and help them out and level them up right before MAG comes out though :/ lol

I don't know about 360, but I would lie if I told you that there aren't a lot of idiots on my side (or both). lol
Still, since it's such a small community, it's rather easily to find some very nice and active people, too.
It really depends on how you see it, but from my view the PC side is filled with nice people in general.
I prefer to have a small community, too anyways.
I don't want to constantly get to know new people and see 3098402840280284092 random people each day.
The world of PC/PS2 is pretty small, so even if you wouldn't purposely want to see certain people or friends, just bumping into them randomly pretty much happens often, haha, from my experience at least.
So yeah, like I said as long as you join the game at all, I welcome you, still, I absolutely vote for PC side. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif Telling you that one of the side is better than the other would cause trouble probably. lol
But I'm all for PC, the advantages of it are good like I stated in my edits from my above post, and well yeah, 360 SUX. jk

Tink got a point there, too. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_razz.gif

I think this'll be the last question, thanks for all the help so far guys. =D

Assuming that I want the expansion, do I need to have the original PSU to be able to play the full game? Or do I need a copy of the original as well as the expansion?

pikachief
Apr 22, 2008, 09:37 AM
for PC u do not need the original copy.

360 u do. lol :/

Lol, I love it when people start posting on the forum to get "convinced" into playing the game.

PC community is small compared to X-BOX but big enough. Most full parties will be found at one popular mission with the occasional few venturing off, which I assume is the case for X-Box. Also, you will not have trouble finding people to talk to. More than half the community does nothing but sit in a lobby and talk. I've seen a bunch of the same people in the White Beast lobby for days who haven't run a mission. Don't get me started on Clyez City 4th floor.

I would recommend PC for the ease of upgrade if necessary. X-BOX is screwed if they try to implement something in a future update/expansion that doesn't spec well with their hardware setup.

Well, I'm getting the game tomorow.... Or atleast thats when it should arrive >.>
So the PC/PS2 servers are still attracting new members occasionally, me and some soon to join friends are proof of that.
The real reason its re-caught my attention is than some one advertised it on another board, but before that, I did have intentons of getting this game.

I'd already convinced myself I wanted to join, it was just a case of which console I wanted to play it on is all. =D

I've placed an order for the game now, so I could have it by tommorow since Gameplay is freaking awesome with deliveries. =P

And people sitting on lobbies for hours chatting is exactly the sort of thing i'm looking for, if I ever get tired of the grindfest. Woot.

I would say the PC server is the more mature appropriate server to be on; though I have met read a lot of posts from 360 players and really like their community too. I think the game works well on the computer interaction level thought there are things you could implement with the 360. I am glad you decided to join PSU make friends and ask questions!

360 can be annoying at times. Young kids screaming, yes, but there's something called a mute button on their xbox live GamerTag. Our economy is not messed up too much. Though during non-peak times we get about 1 universe full. (1*=100people I think full=5*s) Peak times we get about 1-2 full sometimes is half way full. During events you will get tons of people. Generally speaking 1-3 full. Random universes with stars. PS2 I think usually has 2-3stars at peak times

Since you're on PC/PS2, feel free to look me up. I'm always searching for more friends to grind with and just chat around and stuff with, my character is Yuneiko.

NOOOOOO we lost another one to the pc/ps2 side. Lol i just joking around. Im on 360, which seems to function the same as the pc, but whenever i play on my friend's pc file it seems to have a generally nicer community, plus you don't have to hear all the 6 year olds trying to sing during missions. But either way, it all depends on whether you find it easier to play on the 360 an switch over to another game when you need a change of pace, like i do most of the time, or play on the pc where you can still play and surf the web whenever you need a small break. PC/PS2 has been known for their rollbacks and 360 for their screwed u updates and hacks to the system. I honestly would find it easier, and funnier, if they combined the servers. The universes sure would be filled on a friday night, huh?
