I've noticed this with the spoiler-box tag, but there are times where I can just highlight a portion of text, hit the spoiler-box button, and it puts the tags at the beginning and end of the highlighted portion of text. However, sometimes it doesn't do it, and none of the other tags do it at all. Any way you could get it to apply to highlighted text like that all the time, for each tag?

The BBCode Editor is broken under Firefox. It always places the tags at the end - at least it does for me. What browser are you observing this phenomenon in?

I recently started firefox, but I could swear I've had it work before in firefox, as well as having it not work before in IE7 before I even had FF.

The code that drives the editor is slated for a big overhaul in the upcoming forum enhancement. The replacement will be cross-browser compatible and function as intended.

I'm not going to worry too much about the existing editor code. It has been broken for several years.

alright then, it's not a major issue or anything. Any specific schedule for the overhaul though?

There is no specific schedule yet. Development and testing is progressing at a steady pace. Since it is a fairly ambitious overhaul, a lot of time is being spent on it.
