Overclocking is the process of forcing a computer component to run at a higher clock rate than it was designed for or was designated by the manufacturer, usually practiced by personal computer enthusiasts in order to increase the performance of their computers. Some of them purchase low-end computer components which they then overclock to higher speeds, or overclock high-end components to attain levels of performance beyond the default factory settings. Others overclock outdated components to keep pace with new system requirements, rather than purchasing new hardware products as expected by the computer industry.

Sometimes a process used so geeks (such as some of my friends...) can compete for the best speeds not only for their motherboards, but also processors and video cards, but they completely forget that the REAL competition exists in the games we play...

EDIT: yes, my friends are dumbasses...

Cause the sexy ones overclock their motherboards! Don't we all wish to be sexy? *overclocks motherboard*

Overclocking also voids most warranties and if not cooled properly can overheat and (potentially) melt your CPU. I think at one point in time there was a series of chips that would burst into flame.

Dumbasses? For what? Trying to best each other? Overclocking isn't that simple and they risk some cash doing it. So what if they aren't as into the games. Some people love messing with computers and the fact that it can work better with your own handiwork is a reward in itself.

The fact of the matter is that it is ALL they talk about. I am the only one out of probably 6 or 7 of us that actually talks about the games we play...(and no, I don't play WoW)

That will possibly burn your entire house down in a blaze of raid zerg rush glory.

1st lie, Girls don't like Sci-Fi.
Sci-Fi was made specifically to blueprint robot android or alien girls of course. Immortal elf women who are 15% faster or whatever it is Shin reported before all the time also.

Hah, overclocking motherboards is like saying I want to tune my tires. Simply put, it doesn't work that way. You need a clock to change, and motherboards don't have clocks. Processors, memory, and graphics cards are able to be overclocked. Ads for people to think they are cool.

Anyway, overclocking does generally void your warranty. But, some companies not only support it but they'll cover damages done through overclocking (EVGA is a prime example). Also, overclocking in itself isn't bad. It's increasing voltages to overclock that causes the problems. Increasing voltage increases electron migration and that shortens the lifespan of the product. Though, with moderate and measured safety you'll be talking about the chip surviving only 8 years instead of 10. Either way you'll replace it long before it gives out.

I've done a fair bit of overclocking myself but at the moment I have taken a break so to speak. It is a rather addictive thing though because you see the real world performance increases, and since those increases are free aside from the additional configuration time, they are extremely rewarding for what is put in. I mean, in my case, I had a Core 2 Duo E6600, which comes stock at 2.4GHz, and I had it up to 3GHz. What was nice was I needed no voltage increase to do that so temperatures stayed relatively close to what they were at stock and were extremely low while giving a nice boost in performance. As for why I'm not doing it at the moment, I found a really good deal on a Q6600 (the quad-core variant of the E6600) and the performance, even at stock, is peppier and smoother than the dual-core so I really have no reason to overclock it. That and my board has terrible vdroop. Essentially, the motherboard undervolts when under heavy load which means that I have to dramatically increase voltage in the BIOS just to get it to come to the correct voltage under load. But because of that it means at idle the voltage is too high, which increases idle temperatures. That and the board itself isn't exactly known for overclocking quad-cores (EVGA 680i SLI).

tl;dr stupid ad is stupid
