Okay guys, I am going to let you in on a little secret:
Ya ain't gonna learn to draw from some book.

Bonus secret:
You can't learn to draw well in a stylized fashion without learning to draw well period. Copying--trying to copy--some ultra-genericized "manga style" will get you about as far as a couple favorites from 12-year-old Naruto fans on DeviantArt (if you can master the balloons-tacked-on-to-wolf-girl-chests move). Toss the books and draw some real people or things. The first step is learning to see. I'm still workin' on that one.

take some art classes, learn about skeletal and muscle structure, draw a still of whatever the hell is in front of you, for the love of god learn to think in terms of layers.

Sadly, Ast, "seeing" does not bring home the paycheck when it comes to a career in making manga. The ability to draw said manga does. And while I'll admit using a book doesn't get you so far either, it is a stepping stone; the first step in being able to make art on your own. I don't intend to follow in the footsteps of every Narutard on the web. I intend to make manga that interests people.

Nobody is good from the get-go. They have to work their way up, and books are one of the first steps.

Side note: I like manga. Don't insult what I like, if you please. I take offense at that.

there's the "art" of generic manga, which is about all you'll get out of drawing books. The best ones often tend to have their own styles, that break the generic boundaries.

I'm a firm believer that you can either be a good writer or a good illustration artist (aka drawer, but not the kind you have full of unwashed pants and socks).

but maybe i think astie is onto something there. .so take those words in mind. Drawing well is always something that painfully eluded me all my life. All i draw often and relatively well happens to be geocentric shapes or occult symbols. yay4crap

Book, are only good for referencing. Like
HEY REMEMBER, THE HEAD IS 1/2 FOREHAD 1/2 THIS or stuff. But using the book to learn from does not work 100% It is really about seeing and simplfying what you see into shapes. The easiest thing we can read.


Plus, a manga with better anatomy/facial structure as opposed to fabricated nonsense(see DA) it'll look alot better.

I like to experiment on other kinds of drawing styles. They usually turn out to be awfully bright &kidlike. I want to try a cell-shaded Wind Waker style. =]

No, yeah, it's cool to experiment and all. Just recognize that drawing from observation is the key to drawing anything representational, whether it's completely naturalistic or highly stylized. Memorizing a system of exaggerations, conventions, and surface details is the backwards way to go about learning to draw. It's all about understanding form and structure. A good place to start is gesture drawing, which will help you grasp underlying forms. As my figure drawing professor would say, draw from the inside out. When I want to draw a person, for example, I try to figure out first where the bones go, where they connect, how they are related. And even then, it's easy to end up with a stiff, funkified pose. Argh.
