View Full Version : PSU: Why does psu lack the appeal that pso had?

Its always tough to look back at a classic and NOT say "it was the greatest thing sence sliced bread". Why is that? Which Mario Brothers was your favorite? Have the Sonic games really got better? Maybe it was the look, the feel, or even the low grade effects of pso. The boss fights seemed more importain, the enemies more fun to kill. The overall sence of feeling like your the most powerful player in the game and at the same time provides you a respectable challange. I think the sonic team went wrong when they started weighing to heavily on the fans complants. A race or class may be good now, but who knows what may be altered down the road. Never sell simplicity short.

Well the only thing I can comment on is that these threads never end up nicely nor do they get anything accomplished. All I can say is that this isn't PSO. If you want PSO, play PSO. This is PSU http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

Because PSO was fresh, and PSO was first. It's that simple.

PSU is still really fun though.

If pso appeals to you more than psu it is because it is because thats just what you like better. Red isnt better than green although some people like it more than green.

They are both good games, not great games, or perfect games. But, they are both fun to play, and good time wasters. That's really all that matters.

Not many other games have been played by people for over 1,000 hours or more.

I like both, and now that I have a PSP, I can't wait until they release Phantasy Star Portable, so that I can get my PSU fix, on the go.

I'd argue PSU has the appeal PSO never had. In the month I've been playing, I haven't been NOL'd once. I haven't seen a spread needle with 55/55/40/40. I haven't lost my Level 100, max stat, rare-filled character to some random godawful bug. I've found a Neiclaw. I'm taking part in an epic event. I have to run through the horrible areas that were the forest, the caves and the mines to get to the Ruins, but the thing is - I don't *have* to. I can go to more areas than you can shake a dead rappy at.

I can sit in a lobby and be mildly annoyed, but I've yet to see anything that compares to the retards screaing, "NE1 HAV LAV1S C4NN0N?!?!?!?!?!?" over and over and over and over and over and over again, with the most insipid PSO chat sounds.

PSU actually has some semblance of a story. Not a great one, but as far as online games go, and well, compared to PSO...

And I think, above all, PSU has an astonishing, obscenely greater appeal than PSO could ever possibly have for one reason:

There's not hundreds of ....fashion challenged FOnewms running about.

The first of something is always perceived as being better than every other sequel which follows. Because it was the first, there was nothing to base it on or to compare it to. Plus, everything is fresh and new in a first installment.

When you start putting out sequels, people ultimately will always compare it to the original and decry everything that changed. Technically and content-wise, PSU is leaps and bounds over it's predecessor, but most people remember the fun and uniqueness of PSO and that is what makes it "better" in the long run.

Add in "love it or hate it" changes such as synthesis and the change to the grinding system, meant to improve gameplay, and it widens the gap even more.

IMHO I fell in love with PSO more because it was a first. On the dreamcast it was my first time playing a game this way. The idea of playing with other people online co-op was fresh and new. That particular style of phantasy star was new as well. Don't get me wrong, I love PSU as well, but I had a decent feel for how the game was going to be before it came out. I did like some of the improvements made. I liked the expansion, the additions to the fighting engine, and the multiple worlds. Both are great, but with some games people will always have a special place for the original in the series.

Thanks for the feed back. And you guys are right, it really is that simple. And these threads dont gets us anywhere other than friendly bickering.
One last question, how long did it take you to get to lvl130? (Fastest ive seen was 2 weeks).

PSO had challenge mode, that's why it was fun for me... PLus, I could hack it to pieces, always fun.

This thread is actually pretty peaceful compared to other ones.

But lets see, with the current EXP rates that MAG has, if you play like 5 hours a day you could probably do it in a week if you start fresh.

I've never gotten there, but most people assume (due to PSO's cap) that PSU's cap will (at least) reach lvl 200, before the game is through. So, assuming that, the higher the cap goes, the faster it is going to get to level up.

Dont you think thats lame? High lvl noobs running around telling how easy it is to lvl pas. (My complaints could fill a dump-truck). =_=

I didn't read all the posts here but it's the same thing every time.

10 Reasons Why PSO Will Always Be Loved More Than PSU:

1. PSO was something new that hadn't been done before yet PSU has been done to death by now.

2. PSO's story was broken but had absolute freedom of creativity whereas PSU has certain expectations, guidelines to follow and a lot of fans critiquing.

3. PSO didn't have to appease anyone. If you liked it you played, if you didn't you played something else. Simple. PSU has to appease each and every PSO fan as well as not upset them.

4. PSO was pretty hard. Even at the highest levels, there were still very very dangerous places to party. As a newbie you die A LOT! PSU is not hard. You can go to high levels without even dying once.

5. PSO took time to level your character. In PSU, one run can get you to 12-20 depending on the run. In less than a month you can be level 100. *Referring to starting in PSO FROM SCRATCH!*

6. In PSO, weapon and armor combinations made a BIG difference in whether you were good or not. In PSU, you can have the shittiest weapons and armor and still take down the toughest monsters with little concern.

7. In PSO, it was possible to get lost in some area maps. Not likely in PSU.

8. Challenge mode.

9. Guilds.

10. The pursuit of that 1 great item that NOBODY has (So much so that noone was convinced said item even existed). PSO had so many of them. Red Ring, Lame D'Argent, Olga Flow, Mille Marteux, Tsumikiri J-Sword. PSU has none of them. Everyone will always have everything you have and then some.

Edit: Needed to appease people who need things spelled out for them exactly and completely.

In PSO you could get to 100 in a day. How does that factor in to #5?

Were you being power-leveled by a higher friend in TTF? I'm referring to alone. I don't believe you i fyou say you got to 100 in one day alone in PSO. But whatev.

Spam Dragon (Diska of Braveman!<3) all day long. It's not hard. And yes, solo.

PSO gets an 89 from metacritic (based on 21 reviews), while PSU gets a 64 (based on 34 reviews). if you really wanted to squash this shit once and for all, you could read all the reviews and come up with your own conclusion. regardless, japanese-developed games have gone to shit recently.

Then I am right. You had help of some kind from your previous character's equipment. You took what I said too loosely. I didn't realize that when I say something, I will have to be in ACUTE ABSOLUTE detail. I will edit my post JUST for you.

I can tell you 1 good reason. In pso , you could FIND not synth a 9-12 star weapon from a rare mob , and it was still so rare when it dropped that when it did... you become a happy panda!!!

But to all those ready to jump on the flameing dragon to attack and say HEY!! YOU CAN FIND WHOLEY MADE WEAPONS ON PSU!!! LOOK AT THE VARISTA!!! ....... Dont make me hurt you-_-

Lol, you weren't alone. You had help from your other character's equipment. Like I said, everyone else understood what I was saying. You took it a whole different way. Terribly sorry. Next time I will relate every possible detail with a fine-toothed comb so you can't possibly misinterpret my words in that calculating head of yours.

4. PSU has levels that are retardedly hard too. Just nobody does them. In MAG S I'm seeing max level/rank/skill/gear characters dropping with serious frequency. A two man team can be really hard on the scapes.

5. I was shocked to see my GC PSO alts are like lv100 with less than 80 hours on them.

6. I'm glad I don't need insanely rare (or hacked/duped) gear to be a decent contributor for my team.

10. make a list of rares that are out but you've seen at most one person using them? Here's one I could think of quickly.

Gur Asted (only seen one besides mine)
Rattlesnake (only seen one besides mine)
Psycho Wand (seen one)
Gaozoran Rod
Carriguine doubles (seen one)
Agito Repca
Love Inferno
Shinowa Line (saw one before MAG)
Fraduke (one)
DeRagan Slayic (seen one)
Mugunburgac (own one)
Ohga-Mikasic
Chainsawd/C (seen one besides mine)
10* crossbow whatever it is
Kazarod
Kan Yu (seen one besides mine)

That's bullsh*t. Running a mission with 2 people instead of 4 does not mean that mission got harder. Big difference. You just changed your personal factors. What missions are hard? Bruce's S? Nothing else comes close.

I have 11 boards of those 15 you named. All but 1 I don't intend to synth because they aren't appealing to me. Does that mean I can't synth them? No, it means I don't want them. Chainsawd sucks btw. Not worth casino time.

Edit: P.S. I can name at least 10 people who have almost every single one of those SYNTHED. Just because they aren't in the shops or you haven't seen them being used doesn't mean people don't have them.

i agree with darsh.........................

rares arent rare theyre just red and it says you found them when you do.... but really..... nothings rare enough imo, i wish thing were like the way i think crimson/blackheart was were noone really had one, they look nice, and if you wanted one you had to work for it rather than just using a stupid shop cause that would cost you money you didnt have... and you didnt because money was harder to get too... and then when you see someone with a blackheart you think "wow he has a blackheart, i would like a blackheart" instead of "wow he has a crimson, he is 90% of the games population, i would like a crimson, i can feed it too my mag because its barely worth selling, cause i could probably buy 4 more with the money i scammed/begged from that guy from before... im really bored with my palette why dont they ever release any new weapons cry cry cry quit"
actually ive had lots of people say that to me "they should release more weapons..." maybe people dont realise that they are releasing more, because by the time youve logged in seconds after maintenence theres already at least 50 in shops... somehow... except for the 10* laser cannon before that got common aswell so theyre boring now too... but ohh well...

i basically reckon its cause theres a lack of achievement. (and i dont mean xbox ones)

erm... if youve barely seen one of any of these... are you a lvl5 without the expansion who only plays at 8am (UK time) through 9am (UK time again) on universe 31, and spends all of that time letting desaban kill you in unsafe passage because you forgot what the blue and yellow buttons/mouse (is it the mouse i never played the pc one tbh...)do?

I said about 4 characters first, nice trick reading that part with your eyes closed.
Seed Awakened, Dark Satellite, the last blocks of Military Subway, Bruce, HSM, Urgent Orders, MAG Cave block 2 and Ruins (that's with enemies at a fraction of HP) ... the Rogues in Train Rescue S2 were brutal back when it was introduced, the level cap's gone up a few times since and it's way more playable now.

You said it yourself. Alts, with help from high level equipment they aren't supposed to have yet.

... you can get to 100 IN A DAY with hand-me-down gear. The 80 hours on my alts is a leisurely pace in comparison.
I don't give stuff to my alts since that would entirely ruin the fun of finding better gear as I go along, which is the whole point of rolling a new character when you get bored of seeing the same BS ultimate drops with the occasional 0% version of some rare you also already have.

6. I'm glad I don't need insanely rare (or hacked/duped) gear to be a decent contributor for my team.

LOL! PSO was never hard: traps, much? I've beaten areas before my character was able to deal damage with anything except element and life-drain specials.

Since you need the help, what I'm talking about is some guy showing up in a team with some crazy rare or hacked weapon that does ridiuclously more damage than I do with a normal version of the same. I'm also talking about the couple months we all spent at the start of v2 running around with nothing but Red Handguns because they were the only weapons we'd found yet that did any damage in Ultimate difficulty.

I have 11 boards of those 15 you named. All but 1 I don't intend to synth because they aren't appealing to me.

Boards aren't weapons lol. If the materials weren't too rare or expensive (because they're rare) you'd have synthed all that shit and and traded or sold it to get stuff you do want.

Not my fault if your weakass characters don't have enough ATP to make a high % modifiers beat a couple hundred base ATP. Chainsawd/C does almost as much damage on earth mobs as my 30% S-ranks do on their proper elements... I'm guessing it'll pull equal once I've finished leveling Fortefighter, but even PT is strong enough to make it look good.
