Usually when used on the internet, it is similar to a cliche. Such as those owl pictures, captioned cats, I think Rickrolling would be considered one.

A meme (pronounced meem) is an internet fad.
Generally it's an image or phrase that is repeated or well-known throughout... the internet. They're not particularly funny on their own, but they're presented in such a way that makes them funny. Uhm... there's not much more to say than that. It's something you either get or don't...
