View Full Version : What the hell, even more dice?

Nai_Calus

Yes, yes there are more. With even more on the way.

Hey, I have to fill this tub I bought to hold them all somehow, right?

...Anyone got a spare bag of holding? >_>;

http://www.iankunx.net/moarcaltrops.jpg

Caltrops. Much to my annoyance I don't know what style the green one is, though I do know it's Chessex. (They're the only ones who number d4s sensibly. I hate that other way where the rolled number is on the bottom, it's a pain to read.)

http://www.iankunx.net/moard6s.jpg

Moar d6s. They are mostly speckly this time.

http://www.iankunx.net/bigd8.jpg

A rather large d8. The normal one next to it is not new, but is included for size reference. I am quite pleased as I've never encountered a large d8 before.

http://www.iankunx.net/moard10s.jpg

Somehow I keep ending up with nine million d10s. The comic book store I frequently get dice at always seems to have the most of those on hand.

http://www.iankunx.net/moard12s.jpg

d12s. Not much to say here.

http://www.iankunx.net/moard20s.jpg

A medium d20. It can't be large thanks to the big honking motherfucker black d20, but it's still quite impressive. The other two are not actually new, they're more resurfaces from my long-lost dice collection.

http://www.iankunx.net/miniset.jpg

These aren't new either, I've had them for a while. The set that the tiny purple d20 you've seen before comes from. It's been missing for a while too.

http://www.iankunx.net/abunchoffuckingdice.jpg

The full current collection. Yes there's a pair of d6 not quite in the picture. They're a pair of dice shaped like, um, naked people. o.O They came as a freebie with an order of dice a while back. Odd and not really appropriate for PSOW, lol.

And since someone always asks what's in the background, from left to right:

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles volume 24, a wirecutter, a teamug and a single loose konpeito, the bag of konpeito, a tube of miniature coloured pencils and my D&D books and a mechanical pencil.

But they're so boring. Just like a golfball. I'll probably get one eventually, but it's oddly the shape I don't have I'm least in a hurry to get.

Sord
May 4, 2008, 12:50 AM
i know, but it's 100 (and big enough to toss up and down)

p.s. I've never owned any of those big ones you have. I saw the d100 when a friend dragged me into a fantasy shop and I decided to buy it on a wim. Not really a dice collector like yourself. Don't collect much of anything anymore, seems a waste of money since I often lose whatever I'm collecting.

Ian, you need to talk to Shlig about his almost-defunct DnD campaign. http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_wacko.gif

In DnD, it's just a matter of convenience. It's easier to roll one d100 and check the result than to roll two d10s and check two results.

Well, I'll give you an example. After most encounters/battles, the DM will roll percentile dice (1d100 or 2d10) to determine what sort of treasure the heroes find. We'll use this chart, taken from the Hypertext d20 SRD:

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/7232/treasuretableha7.png

If you don't have a d100, you would have to designate one d10 as the tens digit and the other as the ones digit. Then, you would have to check two results. If you mess up, the number could be drastically different than what it's supposed to be (like 18 and 81).

If you use a d100, you only have to check one result and chances of misreading results are reduced.

Go ask Shlig, he tried to start a campaign but it hasn't really gotten off of the ground yet.

Seriously.

You can also solve the 'wait which die was 10s again' by using a d% in conjunction with a standard d10. Those are the ones where it's a d10 numbered 00-90 So you roll the two of them and there's no confusion. And no stupid golfball needed. So say you roll 70 and 3, you rolled a 73. Really easy. And yeah, no golfball. Don't get me wrong, the golfball is an interesting concept, but I don't know that I'd quite trust it to be a fair die. d10s are however definitively a fair die shape. Plus... The outside of the d100 is a sphere. I don't care how weighted it is, the first thing it's going to do is either go on the floor or roll into other stuff. No thanks.

VanHalen: If the muse moves me, perhaps there shall be more thrilling, epic adventures starring my dice.

I need to figure out the exact number of black and blue pixels in the wacko icon, obtain a number of black and blue d6s equal to that, and make the wacko icon out of dice.

probably weren't serious but it takes about 2 minutes

40 black = border

8 black = eyes (4each)

11 black = mouth

118 blue = face

Nai_Calus
May 5, 2008, 01:05 AM
So 59 and 118. Let's see, easily enough done with 5mms but those aren't very impressive in the end. 12mms come in bricks of 36, so two bricks of black and four of blue would do it. Hmmm.

Nai_Calus
May 5, 2008, 02:31 AM
It'd run me 26.91 before shipping to do it in 8mm d6s.

Hmmmmmmmmm. It's very nearly worth it.

Consider using the pips on the dice to alter the shading of the blue dice.

Nai_Calus
May 5, 2008, 03:08 PM
Yeah, have the 6 side up for the lighter area in the upper right, and then fade towards the 1 side for the darker areas. Of course I can't find appropriately *cyan* dice, so the colouring would be off if I did it anyway.

Still, quite tempting.
