View Full Version : PVP; will it ever be in PSU??

My friend WAS interested in joining our PC/PS2 AoI community, but since there is no PVP he no longer wants to play. Is there ever going to be PVP? Does anyone have any advice to get him to join? His alternative game is EVE and he isn't to hip on PSU being a total grind fest...anyone know of any changes in the future that might incorporate the more modern and less traditional MMORPG player? Thanks

what is the name of the next event? after MAG?>? and what might the dates be? that would be great if PVP was added to an event

The "PvP" in the Dengeki Mission Carnival consists of running around in a small room with laser fences, avoiding traps and trying to grab more glowy balls than your opponents. It does not actually involve attacking other players in any fashion.

Allegedly.

Previously I was thinking that there wasn't any PvP in PSO but when you mentioned those laser fences, a whole slew of memories came roaring back into my head. There was a similar game in PSO ep2 right? I seem to remember playing one hit kill games against other players. Can't believe I forgot that.

Ffuzzy-Logik

PSO had all of "Battle Mode" dedicated to PvP. Of course, it was extremely imbalanced and utterly blew.

Rule 6 was the only remotely fair type, and only then if you didn't have any forces (LOL ZONDE FROM BEHIND A WALL U DED I WIN ROFL).

Isn't EVE like... Supposed to be the biggest grindfest / timesink ever? >.>a

"dueling" in dengeki was such a massive failure. the airboard racing was more pvp even. how pathetic.

gratefulgriz

sounds like PSU has never had actual player vs player damage dueling, racing is a form of PvP; ST could really increase player base in my opinion if there was total damage PvP

PVP in PSU will be broken. Why?

Ever looked at any Acrofighter's stats? Yeah, you're not going to be hitting them. Ever.

gratefulgriz
May 6, 2008, 12:48 PM
well i am sure you could make balances to allow for PvP;

Eligaz
May 6, 2008, 12:50 PM
Oh, this again! Well, I'd still love some kind of PvP arena where you could jump in and have a blast. It'd also bring some end game content. Heck, at this point I wouldn't even care about balance, I just want it. Badly.

PSU has, in my opinion, one hell of a fun and interesting battle system. It's not just your average point-and-click pvp you usually see in online games. No PvP in PSU is..such a waste of potential.

Even if you've got absolutely no interest in PvP there's nothing forcing you to participate as long as it's not enforced through open PK or something like that. And I don't care if Sega's previous attempts have been full of failure. I want it anyway.

gratefulgriz
May 6, 2008, 12:52 PM
well, im confused, most people who have posted seem to mention a desire for PvP but the poll is leaning towards player vs player as an unnecessary component to PSu; i think it would keep older players around and add an element of spontaneity to the game

Feign
May 6, 2008, 12:54 PM
I agree. It should be in so people at least have the option. I forsee a LOT of Acro class PVPers though, once everyone gets tired of being Block->Just Countered to death. It'll switch from casual PVP to ARGH LEAVE ME BE PvP.

It would be impossible to have unwanted PKing in PSU. You have to start a mission in order to even attack anything. Everyone that gets PK'ed will have joined the room specifically for the PvP aspect. Where would they get PK'ed without their wish? The lobbies? Lol. ;P

I'm sorry but PvP really brings a bad mindset to players. Sure it can make for great fun among friends, but soon enough everyone will be all pissy and moody and PvP will be the ultimate deciding factor for any type of discussion. Even without PvP we already have people saying "IF WE HAD PVP, ID KICK UR ASS!!!1!!11one"

I've seen it on WoW, I don't want that here. The leaderboards, even though it's only a small form of competition, already has drama surrounding it.

If all your friend wants is PvP, he shouldn't be playing PSU. Sad, but it's the truth.

sylvia, good response! thanks! thats certainly one reason NOT to have PvP...but it would be mission based like someone else stated, so you would willingly no when and where a PvP occurence would take place. it would be nice to compare stats and damage once we all hit 130 amongst ourselves...WoW did kind of ruin it though

May 6, 2008, 02:12 PM
Ashley, what the hell are you talking about? Did your CAST mechanisms malfunction? My friend wants to start playing PSU as a beginner with NO Phantasy Star experience. Blackjack and Poker! What a great idea! I had hopes of their presence since I heard of the casino making it's appearence.

Also, if we were constantly able to race one-another, rather than only during events, that would certainly relieve the grind of everyday PSU-ing.

At least what would be my daily grind, could I log on.

Ummm...difference here being that everyone will have the same stats. There is no way currently to increase individual stats except with job levels and armor. Assume two casts with equal armor at equal job levels will have the exact same stats. (Time to bring Power Materials back!) ;P

Huh. There you have it. In any case, if there was a significant demand for PVP it would've already been implemented. The "Versus" aspect that people were thinking would've been PVP in regards to the Dengeki event ended up being a simple collection competition, or airboard racing.

Looking at the kind of competition and attitudes people are already sporting in an indirect competition such as the leaderboards we have now, even if PVP was kept separate you'll have the attitudes flowing outside of it.

gratefulgriz
May 6, 2008, 02:15 PM
black jack and poker as well as racing! good! but character comparisons through damage mode as they could versus each other would also be a worthy edition, imo

May 6, 2008, 02:19 PM
At this point in the game the only way they could make a balanced PvP is if they just gave us character slots exclusively for PvP. But that's just my opinion.

gratefulgriz
May 6, 2008, 02:19 PM
your right McFly. i did mean that though, and it would bring more necessity for better items, rares, armor, weapons to combat on via PvP on the battlefield...obviously its never going to be implemented, because like someone said it certainly would have been here originally...but the grind of PSU, in my opinion, could certainly benefit from the player vs player aspect...for example, what a great excuse to take Ashley and my argument off the forums and into the game>?!! plus other older players might stick around and duel with friends, loosing people from the community due to boredom and lack of excitement over events really bums me out

xJakkalx
May 6, 2008, 02:21 PM
Honestly, it'd be nice to see some real PvP, but you know it'd be broken, unless they set rules on it.

Stat balancing, class changing, standard equipment, they'd have to bring it back to basics to reach any sort of fair contest, and I'd much rather prefer a ruled match. I prefer the fun of sparring with a friend or battling a rival in terms of skill rather than who has the best equipment and better fitted class.

Although, were they to implement simple, unchanged PvP, I don't think it'd be too much of a mess. I had some fun experiences with friends and strangers in good ol' PSO PvP.

S'pose this is a bit different, though.

Why does everyone want pvp in mmorpgs? It ALWAYS screws up class and skill balance. Not to mention it's more of a e-peen content of who has better gear or is a high level.

If you want pvp then play a game MADE for it. Racing games, fighting games, sports, FPS. Games where it actually takes real skill and pratice to win.

A man can dream, can't he?

EDIT: It seems like there are a few members of this board who are extremely apposed to any kind of competition at all. Why must we react so violently to a simple musing?

I am personally for a more competative aspect to the game. Races, event boards, and the like really excite me much more than killing AI.

The few problems I am most concerned with are:

1. Great majority of population putting all their focus on PvP efficient classes and builds.

2. A lot more shit-talking in lobbies.

3. Increased elitism.

I loved challenge mode a LOT! A HUUUUGE thing I hated about it though was the elitism. I remember in PSO getting into a fight with some so-called legendary veteran of challenge mode. He was a complete elitist, smug, d*ckface, assh*le, prick who was completely rude for no reason. Yet because I got mad at how he was acting, he ordered everyone in his guild (which was huge, I mean hundreds of people) to not help me or talk to me ever. The funny thing is though, everyone LISTENED!!! Now usually I could give a rats ass about who talks to me and whatnot. The problem was, people who had been friends and partying with me for months suddenly were like "ugh, so-and-so said we couldn't party with you and we don't want to cause any problems with the guild". I was like "you fu*king wannabe tools. Why don't you try growing a pair of your own instead of suckling off another's afterbirth."

The point of this story is this. Eventually, it will come to a point that these challenge/competition modes will be where the elite reign. Naturally everyone will want to be elite so all will participate. Then it will evolve into a "your opinion only matters if you have a decent challenge rank". Basically, unless you are ranked among the pillars of the community, your word will mean jack sh*t. Even if you make a perfectly valid, correct, and earth shattering conjecture it won't matter at all.

Challenge mode! Now that brings back some fond memories.

Sort of the opposite of PvP. Work together as a coordinated team, rather than smacking each other around in little spats.

Still, PvP would be fun. And some people seem to think that PvP is all about beating each other and being the best.

Sometimes, it's all about getting to smack your friends around.

You, Mr. McFly, touch on an aspect of humanity that I truly loathe with all of my soul and every fiber of my body.

Elitist pricks are a pain in the ass and a stain on existance's ass. However, it's usually just a sign of weakness caused by lack of power and attention in reality.

ooohhh Challenge mode was fun. Actual maze maps with team work and a real sence of time. Even better was the fact that you really had to work together by swaping weapons/armor and giving out mates to each other as needed to keep going.

That would be a nice addon.

I only ask because you have a history of smug, under-your-breath insults that annoy the sh*t out of me. If it IS meant as an insult, stop being a p*ssy and tell me how you really think about me instead of cowardly implying without directly stating so we can get passed this and get on to more interesting things. If it isn't meant as an insult then I do agree somewhat but at least some of us are improving our station in life to make our opinions actually matter.

P.S. FYI for anyone who hasn't visited the mid-west USA yet. Everybody there talks exactly the same as the statement made above by Drexxin. You will never know who is telling you the truth or lying to your face. It's a very untrusting place ;P.

It would be a joke to even try to create PvP from it.

As of now I'm going to vote that PvP is unnecessary.
Maybe things could change in the future, but the chances are very, very slim.

Consider me late to the party, but I thought that the Denkegi JP event has PvP. Did it end horribly? If it did, then that goes to show you that it might not be possible in general.
