With the PM devices, I am aware that you can use any if you have the right Battle Strength, but where it says Synth Trend, does that just mean the weapons it uses?

Well, it originally means what your base PM is; like, striking machinaries synth striking weapons better than the other types (+5% for every 20 levels). But I don't think using an EX device changes it. I turned my 442 into a 422, and the bonus is still on armors. So I guess it doesn't mean much when you're upgrading. Ignore it.
