I haven't seen it in a while but from what I remember I followed it pretty well. I like how they introduce important scenes like a novel or something.
Is the movie a novel adaption?

yes, but the book is a bit different

the chapters start off like the book in the movie

it kills me when Ritchie cuts his hair off, then tries to kill himself.

If you guys liked the Royal Tenenbaums, then you may want to check out The Life Aquatica (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362270/) and The Darjeeling Limited (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0838221/), as they are also written and directed by the same guy. The movies have a lot of similarities, especially the quirky and dry humor.

i love the darjeeling limited, i have never seen the life aquatica though, ill rent it soon. =p
