This Week in FKL - A Podcast

The Proposal

Dearest FKL,

In my many years of being a spammer in these fine halls of FKL, I have seen quite a few different ways to approach the FKL way of life. But I think there is one frontier that we have yet to conquer, the Podcast. Here is what I am suggesting.

I want to gather a few FKLers together in a Skype chatroom, and record a 15 minute conversation about FKL lore, or new topics or even us trying to do things like the poetry thread, in audio form. I think this could be kind of entertaining and would certainly be a conversation piece if it ever came up on a random playlist on iTunes.

One thing that will be tricky is giving everyone a chance to be on the show, which shall be hosted by myself and a panel of say, 3 more FKLites each episode. These 3 others will be exchanged each episode to keep things fresh. It will be a mixture of "Whos Line is it Anyway?" and the podcast "You Look Nice Today". But I think if we work at it, we can get some times set up to record an episode a week.

About the Show

The show's format is probably going to change based on what gets recorded and who is there. Some may be more chopped up and sketch like, while others may be FKL history and culture lessons and may be set up to play without music breaks.

How do I get in?

Simple! The Podcast will release an episode a week. The podcast will have 2 to 3 guests with myself as host. The time for recording is not on a solid schedule, to accomodate for those who live on the further edges of the landfill than others. The recording time will be set by the group of guests and myself. The guests will come on a volunteer basis, and those who were not on the episode before the episode being volunteered for will be given first dibs on slots. Simply post in the topic mentioning that you are interested in joining for the next episode, and the details will be worked out from there!

You will also need to use the program Skype (http://skype.com) and a microphone. The program Skype is free for Skype-to-Skype conversations, so the only thing you may need to aquire is a microphone. Once you have a skype account and the program installed, you will be ready to go.

Add CheesecakeRecipe to your friendslist on skype, that's me. I may create a list of other FKLites' skype names if they OK it with me.

Let's see... I've used two different headsets. One from Logitech, one from who-cares-what. The Logitech one was more expensive. The first one I used, the W-C-W one, had a MUCH more sensitive microphone. As in, they could hear everything I did, and everything that was going on in the house. If I positioned it in the wrong way I would blow into it accidentally which caused the person on the other end some ear pains. Also, it was a lot more fragile. I broke like, two of them. >>; If you bend the mic JUST the wrong way, or accidentally run over the cord, bam. You're screwed.

The Logitech one was the one I preferred. They don't break as easily and allow you more privacy because the mic is directional. However, keeping the headset on for long periods of time causes ear pains, even after you get used to it (whereas the other one didn't). The problem with them is, in both my and another's experience, the headphones would randomly fail and start cutting in and out for no apparent reason. I fixed it by pulling the plug-thing out of the hole-thing in the computer a little bit, but even after a while of that the headphones just died. Not sure why they do that.

So, there you go. That's about all I know. If that's not what you were looking for, sorry. :wacko:

I know people who use el cheapo microphones and still have a better call quality on skype than using the phone. The main problem is getting a headset that won't just fall apart on you, as they all do. It just depends on if it is a matter of days, weeks or months before it happens. Such is the nature of the beast that is headsets.

Unfortunately, the makers of skype have refused a push to talk functionality like in ventrilo and teamspeak. You can however, set up a hotkey to push once to mute yourself (or maybe you have to hold it down, I don't know how it works) and you push it again (or lift your finger off of it) to un-mute. I used to have microphones that had a mute switch on the hardware itself, so I tended to use those when on Skype.

I'm glad to see a lot of you want to participate, and I hope some of you can get your microphone situation solved soon. Also, Nai, there are voice maskers you can impliment into skype if you are dead set on disguising your voice. And we could certainly use your cultural influence, W0L.

It's free and only uses your internet connection to make calls. The only thing you have to pay for is Skype credits to make calls to land lines and get calls from landlines, but Skype-To-Skype is totally free. So long as you have a decent connection and a Microphone you'll be good to go.

Test show is completed. I don't like the recording program Pamela, because it doesn't allow me to adjust the other callers' volume. I had to boost Sgt's volume each time he spoke in post production, and I didn't feel like doing that for our whole 15 minute long skype conversation so I cut it down. And as it is you can still barely hear him.

I'm also using a temporary intro/outro sequence until I find something more permanent. Album art should also be embedded into the file.

Well the show is supposed to be around 10-12 minutes long so the huge intro wasn't so bad then, but I cut the recording way down because I wanted to check to see how annoying it would be having to boost whatever shligger said. A much shorter intro is already in the works, one about 10 seconds long.

However, I think I made the recording a lot better. Let me know what you think.

Episode Negative 3, this time following a more "random sketch" format. A few things I noticed with the recording process is that it seemed to make Sgt. a little bit quieter as we got further towards the 15 minute recording mark and while my mic was not as sensative at first it got a lot louder.

I've been working on how I want to structure it. Originally it was going to be 45 minutes of nothing but talking like the show I stole the name from, "This Week in Tech", but that seemed more and more unlikely as I went on. Then I thought we could turn it into a sketch show like "Whos line is it Anyway" but that would mean I would have to come up with games and stuff for us to do. Then I decided to record a longer conversation, cut it up and separate the good parts a la the podcast "You Look Nice Today". But with each call I do it always ends up being a unique situation so I may edit it depending on the content we get in those 15 minutes.

A worthy note to any podcast's wikipedia page! But alas, no deaths caused by laughter on the podcast yet. Maybe i'll invite those weasel henchmen from "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" on the show to get the job done.

EDIT: Yeah Tact, they were quieter but I did a lot of volume adjusting to get the waveforms to get close to each other. The raw files from the conversation have Shlig and Van at such a quiet level that I almost didn't see their parts when I was going over the waveform in the audio program.

You can thank The Conet Project (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Conet_Project) for the snippets for the between music. I originally intended those to only be temporary and I may end up replacing them with other clips in the future. We'll see where we go from here.

...to compensate for this I don't think I am going to have a solid schedule for this. I would like to keep the podcast to one a week unless we have a short one. The recording for the first full episode gave me almost 2+ hours of footage to sort through. There was a lot of silence and there was at least a half an hour of stuff listeners wouldn't be able to understand because we were watching videos that are certainly not safe for PSOW. There was also a lot of footage I couldn't use because it got too risque for PSOW.

I'm happy with what I got though.

I think in order to prepare for a show we should have guest speakers sign up ahead of time, and the 2-3 guest speakers will agree on a time to get on with me so we can begin the recording process. Those who weren't on the previous show before the one being volunteered for will have first dibs on a spot.

I'm not too opposed of doing a second one during this weekend, since the podcast is still stretching its legs and i'm getting the process down.

EDIT: Content wise, swearing is fine here and there but nothing overboard. I do cut out content that is usually frowned upon in FKL/PSOW that would normally end with warnings or bannings, such as the S******* D*** N******* discussion we had.

According to some of the help on Skype's website, 9 is the current limit but that is a lot of mouths to account for at once.

Lag is on a person to person basis. If one person is a lot further away than the others there will be a slight difference in when you say something and when they hear it compared to everyone else. The strength of their connection is also a major factor. It usually won't affect everyone directly, just that person.

I think that doing more than one show would make things kind of busy for participants. I may let someone else take the reigns of the show every once in a blue moon while I stand in and just record/edit the episode. We'll see how things are shaping up. I am just as excited as you are, I had no idea this would go over so well and I can't wait to get everyone their chance to be in on it.

EDIT: Ast, I think we could manage with some non-recorded calls as well.

Do they have groups on Skype? If so, you should probably make an FKL Skype group, or something to that effect. That way, we could just connect to it if anyone happens to be on at any given time. Also good for chatting "off the record", as Ast is suggesting.

That's what handymen are for. Sure, you could spring for one of those overpriced specialists (read: one-trick ponies), but a good handyman knows his way around a variety of appliances and situations--and thanks to that, his toolbox is well-stocked with all manner of interesting and useful items. You might say he's a jack of all trades, but I prefer to see him as the master roleplayer. Need a plumber? Handyman. Furnace blown? Handyman. Dead AC have you slick with sweat? Handyman. French maid? Handyman. Not to mention the sort of fulfilling relationship you can develop as a repeat customer. Totally awesome dudes.

Because somebody during our big conversation someone pulled out a "hey cousin do you want to go bowling with me"(GTA4 Reference). we couldn't stop saying it. I was only there for 6 hours.
i felt so dirty after that conversation I went and had a long shower and changed my clothes. I should avoid sitting at my computer for that long cousin.
