Otaku's aren't born, it's a symptom caused by parasitic life form that feed on their hosts and alter their chemicals to change their feelings, driving them to seclude themselves in small places with comfortable and familiar things, so they leave the house as little as possible and never enter the hostile world and reality, thereby preventing their host from the potential hazards of the outdoors wilst it feeds off of the host. During what little contact with "friends" the "otaku" has, or even people they might come across when making short trips to hobby and ramen shops, the parasitic life form will eject a spore via the otaku's bad breath, possibly contaminating nearby people and turning them into an Otaku over time as the spore settles little parasite eggs into the person.

The parasite was first developed by a person known only as Annie-may, who secretly runs the Japanese animated media, created after she took over the paper market (aka manga) selling it's products to otaku's to keep them comfy and secluded, with empty wallets. Anime festivals are considered prime breeding grounds for the parasites, as it's the one time otaku's come out of their hovels and mingle with people who may only be mildy interested in Annie-may's products, but once infected are driven to the obsession of a lowly otaku and feeding the japanese media corporation with money.

So, in a nut shell, the "otaku" is in fact a side effect of a media corporation parasite created by "Annie-may."

by the way the movie looks god awful, and clearly nothing like the book.
If you're referring to the Hitchhiker's Guide, the movie bears about as much resemblance to the book as the book bears to the BBC mini-series that came before it, and likewise, the BBC mini-series to the radio play that came before that. Douglas Adams specifically did not want any two versions of the story to be the same. As for the quality of the movie, I believe it would have been done better, had Douglas Adams still been alive to provide his input, but there are a number of new gags incorporated into it that are really quite impressive. There is a joke regarding the Vogon home world that has multiple qualities of humor, and the means by which Marvin is used to commit Deus Ex Machina is simply genius.

It may not be the best version of the Hitchhiker's Guide, but I sure as hell wouldn't discount it on the grounds of it not resembling the book; and as well, the creator's response to that instinct could possibly involve his hand, your head and a great deal of momentum.
