Digital paint is harder than i thought

If you don't want it to dry up, close the tubes.

But don't take my word for it; ask someone awesome, like Philip Straub (http://www.philipstraub.com/) or Justin Cherry (http://www.nivbed.com/) or, or, or.

Random Entirely related tip: Have you tried tweaking any of the brush dynamics? I use different brushes/settings for different occasions, but 2 can't-go-wrong options you should keep handy:
-brush w/ pressure-controlled size (under "Shape Dynamics")
-brush w/ pressure-controlled opacity and/or flow (under "Other Dynamics")
It'll make the process a little more organic.
