Last year when JP server had their festa art contest event, I was alway hoped that it would come to US server too. However, it was turned out to be winter event without the outstanding part of that festa event which is the fan-art contest. This year, during the same period that JP is running 2nd year anniversary festa contest. It is the time for our community to shine!! Now, this is not JP only, nor US only, but Global!!:D ( I also allow photoshop, because I don't think there are many people who can draw)

Due to Error 065 issue, and we can't fix our billing site yet ;_;, Due to many complain about this event crash with MAG and have no time to work, we promise to give you 2 weeks of extension on the event. Please keep quality of your work. And for anybody who haven't started yet, you still have time to reconsider for it ^^

Event Details

Duration : 5 weeks: 29 July to 3 September
Activity : wallpaper contest.
Event theme : your character story.
Picture Size : 1024x768 or bigger,
(wide screen user) : 1280x768 or bigger.
Submit method : post in this thread.

Photoshop or Art-work?
photoshop and fan-art will be judge in different category.
combination work of 2 category will be decided by your character
(if your character is from screen shot, then your work count as photoshop
if your character is drawn by yourself, then your work count as fan-art)
1 user can send up to 4 works.

Judge team
Arika represent judge as the main event host.
Itsuki represent judge as the main event host.
ashley50 represent judge as the Gurhal top model.
Rubyeclipse represent judge as GM.
the score will be see from quality, creativity, overall design, and effort.
No nudity, vulgarity, or insulting another player

Prizes

there are 2 way to get prizes from this event, and it is possible for the same picture to receive more than 1 prizes.


-Real life rewards-
From SEGA a PSU inflatable GH101 and a PSU Wristband will be given to the grand prize winner selected by judges. Also another PSU Wrisband will be given to the second winner which also selected by judges. (Winners can choose between green or yellow wristband)
From Itsuki Drawing pad Bamboo Fun small (http://www.wacom.com/bambootablet/bamboofun.cfm) will be award for the best picture decided by judges(Itsuki) for both Art-work category and Photoshop category. (this section include user from xbox360. Ask Itsuki if you need anymore detail on this, I do not control in this part.)


-In game rewards-
: fews best pictures from each category (by ratio of entries) will be selected by judge to mixing for top 10 to allow public vote by PSOW users(we combine both PC and xbox entry together). In game rewardswill be selected from event pool in the order of public vote ranking (The person who has higher rank vote will be able to pick the prize first)
The prize pool will keep increase when the festa point reach its mile stone in the puzzle section. ( as you might expected, different sponsors in each server, we the in game prize pool will be different for each server)

PSOW prize: I got permission from Ryna that if some entry look good+suitable and the group of mods think that it can be cut off for making avatar.
Then it will be selected to make as PSOW avatar too ^^
of course, this is also depend on the author agreement.

How to get Festa point?
you can get Festa point which will contribute to the same server pool for everybody by following action:
-give 1 festa point for anybody who PM me a draft of his/her work to resistor that he/she is participating. Draft can be anything that can show me the idea of what are you doing. The purpose is to let me know whether you understand the theme/rule or not, and also opportunity for you to ask specific question.)
From 8 August, you can only send the second draft after you finished your first entry.

-give 1 festa point for anybody who post their finished work in this thread.

-give 2 festa point for anybody who post their finished work within the first week of the event.
(1 work can gain 4 mark if all conditions clear) I will still give 1 festa point if you finish after week one.

notice : individual score(you get this point from quality/effort/idea of your work) =/= festa point (public score, contribute as whole)

Event theme explanation.
we don't want you to send us the whole book of your RP story. we want you to cut only 1 outstanding part/scene of that story into 1 picture. You might have many important part in your story, but we only need you to select one. and don't worry if 1 pic might not enough for us to understand your story, because story is not contribute to the score.
In case of Art-work, you have your power and imagination to draw so many things, I don't see any hard problem here, but I will give some example for photoshop user who can't draw.
I will show some easy example here:
case of my RP, "creating Ultimate newman"
you might putting your character inside the experiment capsule and Dr. Tomrain with many other. are working on genetic engineering on you. (just find laboratory from other game(eg. FFVIIDC, Residental Evil, etc), and replace the person inside the tube with yourself, cut off Dr. tomrain screen to replace some scientist)

Case of people who RP as top idol :
she may use screen shot of the start of FF-X-II, which is the stage show, with many people screaming/waving, and has her character walking on the stage.

Case of people who RP as Sephiroth:
might as well putting a fight with Cloud, kill Arist or/and destroying Shinra co.

Case of Gf-Bf RP:
put both of char into cafe/restaurant with romantic feeling. Since this might be so easy as much as just replacing char, posing or inserting more detail on pic might implement.

Those above are just an easy examples only, I bet each of you should have your different idea in this point. Please also consider "overall look" if they look good or not. If you don't want to draw your character, then you can just use NPCs or other player characters instead. (draw me would me nice xD)

Submitting explanation.
please don't hesitate to post your work here early. Not only that will contribute more to Festa point which also benefit you to unlock prizes, posting early will also reserve your original creativity idea. This mean, if anybody copy part of your work or steal your idea, they will get no score from this section. So, post it first to make sure that nobody can use the same idea as you before you do.

Yes, that would be cool ^^.
I spending only 1 day from a noob without any photoshop ability at all to make my first sig, and then about 3-4 days for the idol project. After that my last work was 1 day of samurai wallpaper. I have learned a lot of things during the time of "no update" that people alway complain about having nothing to do.
A while ago, I just make this event banner before posting this thread.
The hardest and spending most time part of work is to get prizes for this event tho ^^;

Alright! Its Kesara time!

Just a little adding on some things. To clear confusion. The theme is drawing your character in ways that you would like to see your character. In ways that PSU does not allow you to have. We're trying to keep it a bit open ended and unrestricting. So as long as its within reason, its all good.

Also, for the "Photoshopping" category, anything submitted to this needs to be based on a screenshot. And the "Fanart" category will be anything that is not based on a screenshot. There is a lot of ways you can mess around with a screenshot, and the original screenshot doesn't need to be in the final picture.

As for prizes, I personally will be giving a bamboo fun to the top person in each category.

Then, the top participants from each category are going to go into a poll for the ingame prizes. The in game prizes are all on the PC/PS2 servers though unfortunately. But this is mainly so we have a good mix of winners, as long as you can be very original and creative, you don't necessarily need to be the best at photoshop or drawing and you can still get some prizes.

Yes, I'll have Arika clarify it in the top post later. But for this contest, we're having photoshopping mean anything that is originally based on a screenshot.

As I clarify on the main post.
if you draw your character by your own, so it will count as "Art work"
even you use photoshop to make addition things.

Art work + photoshop combine usually contribute a very good work. I love it :) .
(there are many good works result from art work draw combination with photoshop color in tutorial that I linked)

Yeah I noticed.. but I am not really a PSU player (yeah played story mode).. never really got into that game.. and switched back to PSOBB when thr private servers came.

I however am experienced with drawing PSU stuff, since I've done quite a lot requests.. I wouldn't mind to contribute some art for the contest, since I still have summervacation till the end of august. It's just that I don't have much knowledge of PSU and the characters and the new clothes and weapons and stuff :p

If your going for desktop sized you should aim for:

4:3 ('normal' screen) >> 1600x1200
16:10 ('wide' screen) >> 2560x1600 (altough 1920x1200 will probably be the max for most people).
5:4 ('square' screen) >> 1280x1024

Syl, you are right, I was mistaken on that, now, I have check again.
the basic is 800x600 -> 1024x 768 -> 1280 x 960
PSU highest resolution is 1280x1024
and wide screen is 1280x768 -> 1680x1050

so I will change to 1024x768 size++ from now.

for example:

you will never see 井 at any between word.
青眼の白龍　= something called blue eye white dragon... :P

In chinese, they will use 紅　for red. ,while 赤 mean crimson instead.

I have several ideas but I still don't know which one to pick, all will be quite time consuming so I'll probably be able to send only one at best.

I'm going to make some final touches upon the 1st entry maybe, but since I don't like coloring, inking, and/or CGing it's going to be the final draft. Though for the 3rd and 4th entries I'm still rethinking about them. I draw kinda fast, but I'm not very careful with my drawings sometimes. For some reason, I'm not really entering to win, but the motivation of a contest got me seriously drawing again since I'm don't practice (which is definitely a no-no for artists).

(I thought the 'i' was the difference between the noun and adjective but I wasn't sure.)

As for tracing from a screen shot, no. I was pretty hopped up on pain killers when I started it and the blue haired newerl resembles the reference pics more than I liked. But the rest were all mine, but none of it was traced.

It's supposed to be Denes Unification point activated again (not considering the activation in episode 1 its true form now shows itself from 500 years ago). Sekai and her fellow GUARDIANS were defeated from Fakis' sudden attack and the stage collapsed in itself, resulting in it crashing on Parum's surface. Fakis escaped and is looking to dwell on the Denes lake now, being taken in by the atmosphere of the rich A-Photon point, sending his devastating meteor to get rid of all the Svaltuses and stuff to settle down himself. His goal: HUGE dark contamination.
Are Sekai and her fellow GUARDIAN friends really dead?? How will the remaining 3 Heroes handle Fakis? And why does Denes' system suddenly activated itself again? ... -- :-P

Description:
Rui is using an ice-catalysator which lets her enlargen her Crea Doubles through willpower.
Kizeragi is using something similar to the Dark Wings, but these ones allow him to have twice the pierce-through power of each Shotgun bullet, hence the name.
Amherst is using a flame-catalysator on his WEAPON and not himself, which lets his Crea Doubles produce melting flames on top of the material power from being earth element.
And NO, those little light balls are not supposed to be snow, they're part of the overflowing A-Photon Atmosphere.

Now, "Resting Place" as I call the first, was originally just the crash site, without any people etc, but I know some people don't appreciate simple backgrounds as much as I do, so I tried combining the two designs...

So the thing is, which way should I go? Can I enter "Resting Place" as it originally was, or does it need my character in it? Similarly, should I enter the other wallpaper without a more detailed background? (I like it as is, but I'm often in the minority!)

Well I don't know, making an entry without any chars at all seems a bit weird to me.

The crash site (imo) doesn't fit very well with the chars.
I personally prefer the 2nd one. It's got characters, and the background looks fine.
But anyways, you can just adjust things to your liking, no?
So far it doesn't look bad, maybe make it flashier, add some effects and texts or what not.

@ Sekai : nah, it doesn't necessary. because keep in mind, the more puzzle you open = more prize and spot you can get. Thus, this is only "adding and adding" no matter the value of individual increase or not. the value of overall prize and potential that you can select better prize are both increased. Moreover, you also open up more spot for lower rank to gain reward too.
(if there are 3 prizes, only 3 highest ranking will get reward)
(if there are 10 prizes, all of top 10 ranking will get reward)
However, as you would notice, the last prize will be the most expensive one ^^


with ST logic, you can see some early puzzle are way better than some later too (eg. synthesis +10%,15% puzzle are far better than the free make over puzzle)

New rule has been adjusted, since some don't really work on their main entries but only send in drafts. I think that making drafts have no meaning.
So I will only receive drafts and give festa points one by one from now on. (you can still send me multiple drafts in case you want me to select one of them though)

How I'm understanding this is, after you sent a draft (which will add one festa point), you can't make another draft before submitting the first draft edited as a full entry, because only sending drafts for the purpose of opening the panels have no meaning.
You're still able to let Ari check out multiple drafts though so she can decide on ONE of them.

I've spent quite some time amusing myself by putting captions to it. :D
I decided to start with the character that will most likely take the most time. Casts have a lot of detail. The only screen shot tracing done was on the back ground, and I may just use a striate screen cap for the BG to save time.

I don't think it's a wise idea to "force" people to draw in another style (Stereotypical anime style) just because it might higher their chances of winning the contest.

It's important to let all the artists shine in their own style. But yeah.. it's a matter of taste.. you seem to favor the cute anime style, while I am completly bored of that style.

I think you should judge without looking at the styles. There is alot more to art then just the style that is used to draw it.

I originally had a much angrier expression on Miss Cat-girl android, but with that 1 star noobie wand in her hand it looked like she was about to clobber little Miss GH432 PM. And I had a feeling that imminent hostility towards a PM would have seemed less amusing.


I like that "argument" wallpaper. Though maybe the background could use a bit less blurr, because umm, it's kind of, y'know, a bit too blurry I think. XD
I had the background blurry for 2 reasons.
One, about 30% was to get a camera focus effect so that the subjects of the picture are the main focus. And you may notice that as the wall on the right side of the picture gets closer it is no longer blurred.
Two, about 70% of the reason was that Saga uses little to no anti-aliasing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-aliasing) in this game which leaves my screen shots with jagged edges. So I would have to touch up or redraw every edge, and I didn't think I had the time to perfect the background and get any progress made on any other entries. So i just blurred the heck out of it, and just touched up the right side.

If you don't like your own work yourself, it will have a small chance of getting any better. Since you work digitally, My advice is to dump the current sketch in an seperate layer, lower the opactiy of that layer to like 25% and start resketching on top of it in a new layer.. that works lots of times for me.

Arika; the weaps are put together in maya, I could whip up something 2 or 3 times nicer, but both computers (work and home) are running maya at .1 normal speed, so it takes forever, and crashes often.

i take an outline from the screens on PSOW, then build blocks that match as best as i can, again, with a dying program.... i really wish maya were working better, i could whip up weaps close to the real quality.

I'm currently working on some blueprints for laser cannons in ACAD.

Ok, here is my contribution :
Carma used to work for the Endrum Collective, the goal was to retrieve some informations from magashi
So I decided to draw a picture of the two characters where Carma would be under "Magashi's Wing".

The picture is a wallpaper for a 20-inch widescreen (1680*1050)

It will be judge base upon the main idea of the picture is from drawing or art. Most likely it will end up in photoshop category tho. However, I will have to see it first.

Very nice Carma! After seeing your picture I couldn't help but take another look at my first entry. And although I don't regret my coloring I think I could have done a better job on my line clean up. And I am visited with a strong urge to go back and do some more detail work on it. But I have turned it in already and must move on, so I will just say "thank you". You have raised the bar, and set a new standard for the level of detail and work that I need to work towards. And I hope that we will see the bar raised a few more times before the contest is over. And that is why I enjoy contests they provoke artist to improve.

here is my final, final entry, i'm not going to change it any more, I swear. Arika, thanks for doing such a great job updating and organizing this thread, and the contest!
just re-worked some of the layers, added a bit of detail into the front weaps, some smoky stuff on the ground, cleared up the sword a bit.

I might get a go at it. It sounds so tempting. I draw with a mouse for my digital work, so my work might not be clean cut smooth with the lines. But its awsome to see.

OMG time for KAKWANE PARADISE. I had to adjust the final widescreen subs a bit, due to the format being off a tad. I didn't want to scale the art at all, so I just added a couple "widescreen" black bars to make up the difference. My current photobucket doesn't support 1680x1050 res, so I'll update this post with a link from my comcast account once I get it uploaded there.

Basically wanted the story to be about the first time Favors encountered all these Kakwane in her bath house. That being said, here we go.

That's pretty sweet Cracka I love the expressions on the Lil-Waynes, they look so enamored with Favors, almost mesmerized. Ya know at first look I only saw bubbles, then after you made that comment I don't see bubbles at all anymore, you totally ruined my view on the whole thing! skeet skeet skeet
