View Full Version : GC: Why is this game so unstable?

I don't understand why ST made it so easy to lose stuff in this game. Don't get me wrong... I am addicted to it and have been playing it since late October, but I can expect to BSOD at least once every time I go online. Sometimes it's 2 or 3 times. I use SprintDSL and I have no problem surfing the net so I know it's not my isp. I have tried everything... exhanging my Broadband adaptor, getting a router, changing the in-game settings, you name it I have done it. Whenever I do disconnect it tells me I am disconnected and to press start... so when I do the screen goes black and it won't let me reset so I have to power off. Of course I lose all my items as well, I am broke all the time because of this. I would like to carry several weapons when I am online because I would like to switch out but I can't in fear of losing them.

It's weird because the disconnects happen just randomly. It does not matter what ship or block I am on. Sometimes the block is empty and it still happens. Luckily though if I am a playing with a team and they all of the sudden stop moving I hurry and telepipe back to the bank and deposit everything... and of course after that when I quit it goes to that black screen.

Does anyone else use SprintDSL? It is a pppoe connection and I have heard that several people with pppoe have had troubles. I thought Sega would have fixed that by now but I am outta options. It is really starting to get annoying.

You might have better luck if you put a second network card in your PC and share the DSL connection from the PC.

I've heard bad things about PSO's PPPoE support and those having problems with it were able to correct it this way:

1. Connect to your DSL provider with the PC.
2. Share the connection using ICS, Internet Connection Sharing which is available on Windows 98 Second Editon or higher, through a second network card and crossover cable to the Gamecube.
3. Configure PSO to use DHCP for the Broadband connection.
4. Play online!

Already tried it. Thanks though!

My GC's pluged into my hub. I have two other PCs and a Wireless PC conected to it. Does that mean anything?

You know with all this BSOD I am so lucky that I have not had a character corrupt.

Knock harder, you were too sensitive on it! ;p

That is odd that you can always expect a BSOD when you go on at least once, though. Heck, with my ghetto'd out shared 56k connection over BBA, I don't get BSOD or FSOD. (Well, I get the standard lobby FSOD, but who doesn't? ;p)

Can I get an Amen?

I think I'll go online tonight, despite the scare. If I lose my characters, I lose my characters! http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime1.gif

that same thing was happening to my friend... it would disconnect every 2 hours on the dot
but he just got a new dsl modem that stays on kinda like a cable modem and hooked it up to a router and it works fine now

has anyone that's had these problems been using Charter Pipeline? I know... i know... but it's the same general question? cause that's what i have and I have no desire to lose my whole 28 hours of work... yeah, i know... a whopping 22 FOnewm... whatever...

It happens anytime for me. Except for the lobby... it has never happened in the lobby for me.

You know what else is weird. It has a bad lag. Whenever I hit boxes it takes about 10 seconds for the items to pop up. And when I go to take an item it does not make that noise to let you know that you have picked it up for about 5 seconds so this makes it real confusing when I am on a team because I am not sure if I got that item or not. I use DSL and my connection is 1.5mbps so I dunno what the deal is. When I surf online it is lightning fast.

Same here. I will take my chances. This game is just too much fun not to play it online.

This probably happens when you join an existing game, huh? Try making your own game and pick up a few items... If all goes well, you'll pick them up with barely a hint of lag at all. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif PSO configures games for narrow or broadband based on who creates it, it seems like. A 56k game will be much slower for a broadband user, with pretty long item pickup times and even longer join/synch times. With a BBA created game, broadbanders get barely a hint of item lag, and join times are only a second or two long.
Hopefully that'll solve the problem, 'cause otherwise, I dunno. o_O

After reading this i'm actually having second thoughts about buying/playing PSO again.

I never heard this many problems when PSO first came out DC. I only remember losing my character data once to BSOD least back then. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif

500 posts here on PSOW and you didn't know what FSOD means? http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif

You know now that you mention it I hardly ever create my own game... I am usually joining other teams. Guess I just never really thought about it.

Did you try changing your system? Everyone who complains about this stuff usually has some sort of hardware issue. The game runs perfectly fine for me, and I don't know why everyone else is having problems.

I haven't had too many problems with my connection to the net via GCN. I have MSN 8 and I've only BSOD'd twice since late December. It really sucks when it happens your first time. I had all my goodies on me.(I LOST MY MARACAS!!!!!)

Yea and what really sux is when you lose stuff on a daily basis. I wish I could switch isp's but since I am in a contract I am stuck with it. Are there any other SprintDSL users out there that play PSO?

My setup is as follows:

The cable runs into the modem, which runs into my PC. I have two network cards, and using the technique watashiwa described, I have an ethernet cord running out of the PC*. This cord runs into a router, to which my Dreamcast, GameCube and PS2 are connected.

I never seem to get FSOD or BSOD, but I sometimes get disconnected and I sure lag when the rest of the family is on the other stuff.

* If you're wondering why I do it this way, and don't just run the modem into the router and all my devices from the router, it's because this way, I can set the PC to get 50% of the bandwidth and the 3 consoles to get the other 50%.

For those of you who have played many hours and suffer BSOD's(Buzzing Screen of Death), I just wanna let you know that the fault lies not with Sonic Team programmers but is in fact a hardware issue the GCN seems to have. I've had 2 other games freeze up on me in the same manner as PSO does online.(Metroid: Prime and Super Smash Bros: Melee)

Now since those games are obviously not online or done by ST, the logical conclusion is to find one common thing in which to form a theory of blame. I'm afraid to say that blame lies with Nintendo.

I have never had a problem until PSO. I own both Metroid and SSBM and they have never frozen up on me... or any other games for that matter.

Lastnight was my first night on GC PSO online...I have the same problems. I run Earthlink DSL, 1500/128 with a broadmax uhp modem(it is also a simple router). It is a pppoe connection.

I can get on PSO fine, but I have had 2 black screen's of death tonight already...losing my unequipped items on me. My Gamecube was not buzzing either time, but I could not reset. I had to power down, then power on and go online, then resave.

/sigh...

I'm going to go buy a real router today and put the modem in bridge mode...and make the gamecube connect via dhcp....this pppoe problem is pissing me off.

I have never had a problem with my Gamecube otherwise.

I'm running:
Tcp Receive Window at 37752
MTU at 1492

at the threshold for routerpppoe with 1.5Mbit/128kb ADSL...tests run fine and I'm not losing packets and surprisingly, earthlink has good DNS. I grab low pings >_<

I just hope it is the pppoe =/
Maybe I should have waited out for xbox pso..though I already had gc pso since launch...and I saw that broadband adaptor dangling off the hook lastnight and grabbed it faster than rosie o'donnell can find a spoon.....my precioussss ~_~
