what exactly so you have to put in this to get the items out.

iv tried putting in loads of things and not once have i had anything back.
iv even put in 10 star items and still had nothing :(

Things that have a relatively high npc resell value.
Like 7-9* weapons.

I just dump all the low % 7-9* weapons I pick up in random runs into the offering box. Seems to work okay (if you like Mikumiko sets).

I got a few mirei mikuna stands though, I'm fairly sure I had super holy luck, or Mega holy, whatever lvl 3.
