I totally agree, some entries that got cut are way better than some that made it. I also think the two categories should have been separated evenly, not mixed into one ranking. Congrats to the winners though there is some nice work.

I m sure the question you asked about "there are some picture that look better but why not get in", all of the judges think the same as you!
all of us have different preference, and in the end, nobody could predicted the correct result of the top-10th ranking at all. It is like these:

Itsuki trend to care a lot on picture detail, something like background and etc.
ashley50 care mainly on only if it look good or not.
RubyEclipse seem to account more on creativity idea.
And me care on the skill of the artist and effort.

This is also the reason why we need 4 judges. We want to look it in different way and make the balance between each point from view.
no any single person will preference to all of them, since it is the result that combine from many people.

Surely enough, there are some pictures that I wanted them to get in, but couldn't, because other judge gave low mark, while some pictures that other judge like, were given low mark from me too. we make balance between each aspect.

RP background:
It's supposed to be Denes Unification point activated again (not considering the activation in episode 1 its true form now shows itself from 500 years ago). Sekai and her fellow GUARDIANS were defeated from Fakis' sudden attack and the stage collapsed in itself, resulting in it crashing on Parum's surface. Fakis escaped and is looking to dwell on the Denes lake now, being taken in by the atmosphere of the rich A-Photon point, sending his devastating meteor to get rid of all the Svaltuses and stuff to settle down himself. His goal: HUGE dark contamination.
Are Sekai and her fellow GUARDIAN friends really dead?? How will the remaining 3 Heroes handle Fakis? And why does Denes' system suddenly activated itself again? ... --

Description:
Rui is using an ice-catalysator which lets her enlargen her Crea Doubles through willpower.
Kizeragi is using something similar to the Dark Wings, but these ones allow him to have twice the pierce-through power of each Shotgun bullet, hence the name.
Amherst is using a flame-catalysator on his WEAPON and not himself, which lets his Crea Doubles produce melting flames on top of the material power from being earth element.
And NO, those little light balls are not supposed to be snow, they're part of the overflowing A-Photon Atmosphere.

If I had realized I doubt that I would have changed my picture, but it does explain much about the final line up.
However with that said I think everyone that participated did a wonderful job. And for those that made the top eleven it was well deserved.

But I really liked number five too! Classic background, good character style (and likeness!) and spiffy weapon effects. It was a close call.

Thats not really what I meant but I understand. The artists were not judged based on how well they could draw a story.
You mention RP stories which implies that you thought I wanted you to judge their backgrounds, character development, and in game friends. Which I agree with you whole heartedly, we have no right to do. But what I meant was does the picture by itself, without any background information, or fore-knowledge of the character/s displayed in the picture convey a story that the viewer could pick up on. Whether or not its true or what was intended by the artist a story should be portrayed. And as you said everyone in the finial line up did that, however some did it better than others.
But its not my contest and you may judge as you see fit. I just wanted to explain what I intended in my last post.

we don't want you to send us the whole book of your RP story. we want you to cut only 1 outstanding part/scene of that story into 1 picture. Congratulations to those who won the prizes. The judging results seem a bit odd, but it was Arika's contest anyway, I guess. It just seems like there's been a lot of confusion over the judging criteria, heh.

I think of the remaining pictures, I like the style of #3. I think it would've benefited from a fully realised background maybe, but I like how the PM's are drawn.

I gotta say though, some of the entries are really nice- good work everyone who entered.

you might not know deep we kept planing on it again and again, and prepare for every situation.

No no, it is each each judge to have their own separate criteria.
Really, all I gave to judges at initially is only the part about judging need to based on quality/creativity/effort/design, however, I didn't say that which one should worth more or anything.


When I got the result yesterday, I was kidda surprised and see all the different on high score and low score, then I realized that they all have very different preference. So I made that post about it with the word like "trend to" and "seem". Because that is what I analized it myself.

Anyway, it is very good. I think it is better than expected , even though some of the pics I wanted isn't shown here.. T_T

Yeah, I can clarify a bit too as one of the judges - we were not given any special areas to focus on, or divided up into specific categories - Arika's post was just regarding how certain judges seem to have certain preferences, based on the scores submitted.

Overall, it was hard deciding which ones to rank absolute highest, as there were a ton of great entries, and I know not all of them may be posted here for voting. Well done to all of you who sent a submission in, and good luck to all of those now in the final running!

Also just a mention that all participants (whether you're in the final list or not) should make sure to get their partner card ID# over to Arika, so she can send it off to us later. As mentioned, everyone who contributed will be winning 15 silver coins for their hard work, regardless of rank.

Honestly I'm just glad I've made it as one of the finalists. But Arika, I've chaired quite a few art contests and I've found that its best just to point out the rules and tell everyone thats what we judged by. Which is what you did and I realized that I was mistaken regarding the criteria. But when you started justifying your judges, you stared to confuse people. But putting that aside I think you did an excellent job and I found the contest to be very enjoyable. :D If I came across as argumentative I apologize.
But as this is an open forum vote I will cast mine however I want. Now I just have to decide which to pick. ^_^;

I think people are blowing some things out of proportion here. When it comes down to it, there were a lot of that may have been done mediocre and some things that have been done extremely well. But, what it comes down to is, the contest is serving its purpose.

There has been a lack of enthusiasm in PSU. And this was meant to add some more enthusiasm to such. What we wanted the most was for people to participate and people to have fun. Even if you didn't win, we only hope that you enjoyed your work and the work of others.

With that said, I'm not going to really stand for negativity. If you did not win, or did not do as well as you thought you should. Thats not something to discuss here. Or if you have complaints or praises, I will make a thread for that discussion in the fan works section shortly. The only thing that really deserves to be in this thread is discussion and critiques of the submissions and winners. I thank everyone for participating, and hope to see more works and critiques in the future.

As for the entries here:
As I said before, I'm not unhappy with anyone that made it into the final poll. Some of my favorites did not make it, but I'm still happy with what did. I would liked to have seen one of Arcia's in the top picks and I thought kayahime's was some hot stuff and really would have liked to see how it would have faired in the polls. But alas, it did not happen. XD My personal favorite was lockedoexe's submission. I think it really had a nice charm to it. Even though it may not be the best drawn or the most detailed, it has a lot of spunk and fun in it. Though I do think Jared_T's submissions probably embodied everything the contest was about. You can tell they had a lot of creativity, skill, and effort put in them.

I will give my critique of each and hope that whoever did them will take my critique well. Also it's for the purpose f organizing my thoughts, I'd like my opnion to be herd.

Entry 1:
Very good and straight to the point with story wise, the detail in the picture is well and the style of the lines in the art gives more attention to the depth of the coloring not too much depth but enough to make it look soft, and the 2 characters seem to fit perfectly together side by side. Really good proportions the only thing that bothers me is how the text stands out from the rest of the picture and the planets also....Reminds me of the concept of Sigma & Zero's relationship in MegaMan, "Nothing is Absolute"

Entry 2:
Flat colored but cute, something with the proportions bother me, but it is drawn well, the effort in the background also stands out to me. The only thing that really bothers me alot is the shadow of the bird. XD; I at first didn't understand the concept without reading the description and couldn't tell what the shadow was...

Entry 3:
I like the style of drawing but the only problem is it looks like something off of Rozen Maiden....I could imagine the characters in their place all too well with the same similar drawing style and coloring and background detail. But it makes for a nice wallpaper.

Entry 4:
Well okei I guess it's alright for one person to win twice. The concept of story is really nice, effort of the background is perfect and coloring style is what stands out to me. My boyfriend said yesterday to this one, "It looks like it could me, lost looking atthe map, that's exactly how I would be" It's relatable.

Entry 5:
My boyfriend said to this one yesterday, "It looks like some Zelda rip off".....And I didn't realise until today that it said Triforce. lol. It has the classic background feel to it using simple background and then doing the characters above it. I think it would make a great wallpaper but you can't really tell the story from just looking at it.....I just see an introduction of your characters. Coloring and drawing style are really nice.

Entry 6:
The drawing is go but there's so much going on in this one that the way the coloring is it blends too much together in my opnion. @_@ if maybe the coloring had a little more depth to it it wouldn't look so busy. But you can see the story in this a little. It gives purpose to the characters in it even without looking at the description or title.

I really like how you took the time to draw everything out even the floor. Lol. Very good in detail and the coloring is light and fluffy. You can really tell from just looking at it that it's a momment out of your character's life, resting with her PM doing her job. lol The style is also very different from the other entries. Would be perfect as a wallpaper.

Lol very ironic, wasn't expecting something like this to be enterrred, really good work for the photoshop part but maybe some effects could've been put in, the point of photoshop is to render not just copy n paste but I like it, it's funny. Maybe put scary eyes on the pm and some teeth LOL then it would be more funny.

Entry 9:
I like the addition of your own drawing into the pictures in the background it looks good as a wallpaper and it puts the focus on your character. From that picture I can tell she just likes being a beast. Wild. lol Very themed arround thanks festa looks more for something that could've been a good entry for the ACTUAL thanks festa event.

Entry 10:
I like the theme of this picture the palcement of the characters and the way the colors match nicely together the onyl thing is the abundance of effects and how some stand out alot more than others. The effects are the first thing that catch my eye which means there's a little too much going on with the effects, but I like the picture, tells the story well. It would work well as a wallpaper also.

Entry 11:
I actually like this one alot I have a thing for wallpapers similar to this. It's perfect as a wallpaper but the story is missing. The background is really good and the concept is great. But that's all I can really think of to say.

In the end my favorites would be 1, 4, 7, and 10. Because their concepts are great and they would work well as a wallpaper, I can just imagine my desktop icons spread out along these images. You can see the effort and work put into them and they are good with the details, but I think the one that stole my heart is 4.

A great relatable concept for the PSU audience who are new to a map and don't know their way arround the place. Especially in that specific area where they throw you off sometimes by putting plants infrotn of paths and petting dead ends and the map is so expansive. Also I always loved the mushrooms the PM eating them makes me laugh because I love mushrooms to eat also~! The quality is great and the colors flow well together even though the PM stands out the lighting is good for this area. The momment picked from the character's story is really good and finally the fact that it'd work very well as a wallpaper.

LOL just like me..... I think I use too much space for background and too less space for the character, I'm actually doing a piece right now where the character takes up most of the background so I'll be forced to not do so much with the background.

Having a lot of background isn't necessarily bad if the background is part of the picture like pandaline's or theres more than one character like lockedotexe's. In normal artwork it probably wouldn't matter, but part of this contest was to use wallpaper (or atleast relatively wallpaper) resolution.

ehhh having a lot of background and empty space is really nice for a wallpaper type theme, it's no good to have icons overlaying something worth looking at.

Well thank you Aussei. I'm always glad to be critiqued... or reviewed... or whatever. I tried to keep the colors "light and fluffy" because I personally prefer lighter wallpapers, but I've used a fair share of darker ones. I also used a fair bit of open space(the floor) in the picture and offset the focus to the right, as I tend to keep all my icons on the left. When I make a wallpaper I don't want to have my subject/s covered or force me to rearrange my icons. I'm glad that you liked how I portrayed a little slice of life of my beast character. Thanks.

One thing that I would like to point out other than what aussei say on the first entry is that. Carma drawing and color style are very standard. It is neither asian style like no.2 no.3 no4 nor western style like No.7 no.9 It is not the picture which made for favor specific style or any particular, but it goes well with everybody. The fact that his style can go well with every judges regardless of different preference, made him got high total score.

The drawing is go but there's so much going on in this one that the way the coloring is it blends too much together in my opnion. @_@ if maybe the coloring had a little more depth to it it wouldn't look so busy. But you can see the story in this a little. It gives purpose to the characters in it even without looking at the description or title.

Well neither did mine, but I graduated High School 13 years ago. And havening PCs to work on was the best I could ask for.
But I've work at several school districts since then and all of them have a decent collection of tablets for digital art classes.

Those 3 has pros and cons,
The first magashi one is perfect drawing & colouring style, both magashi and herself look like official drawing Sega could make.
The Mayday one is cute!! look like she is calling people to vote in that picture. ^^
The rest in the room showed the most skilled on coloring part. either background or the bed set, it is very hard to make them.
