I'm trying to put together all the different things I've read about the GC version here. Please correct any errors. I don't have the GC version yet, so I don't know this from personal experience.
- There were duping bugs, but Sonic Team fixed them.
- Then there arose a problem with FSOD (frozen screen of death) and character corruption. Sonic Team says they are trying to fix those now/soon.
- The Action Replay comes out in a matter of weeks, which may bring back duping and other cheats.
- There is currently no keyboard being sold in the U.S. You can import the ASCII keyboard/controller combo for a fairly high price. Someone has developed a home-brew adapter for regular PC (PS/2) keyboards, though the adapter is not yet ready for sale, especially on a large scale. There are rumors of MadCatz releasing a keyboard in the U.S., but there has been no official announcement.
- The GameCube broadband adapter and modem are somewhat hard to find, though they become available from time to time as more are shipped.
- The game itself is somewhat hard to find in some places.
- The cost to play is $8.95/month (the Hunter's License fee). You are allowed a free 30 days of online play, though you must present your credit card info before going online.
- Though before, the Japanese and U.S. servers were separated, they are now open and players in Japan and the U.S. can play together. (I assume that the EU players will be able to play with U.S. and Japanese players when the game is released there.)
- People do occasionally have problems with disconnects, BSOD, and character corruption (outside of the recent developments), though they are not a major issue for most. There is currently no PK-ing, CK-ing, or other major cheats.
- Four main characters and three temporary (offline-only) characters can be stored on one memory card.
- Offline split-screen play produces a certain amount of lag.
I think I will be getting the GC version... I will need to find a BBA if I do. And just hope that a keyboard comes eventually.

Finding the BBA isnt the problem, its finding the game that is....

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. But the ACtion REplay fits in the modem slot, thereby eliminating the ability to use it online. As for hacked weapons, I've heard that Sega eliminates the weapon inventory if the system detects hacked items, I don't know if this is true but we'll see.

I hope that Sega will be able to get rid of hacked items.

Really...is it that hard to find? Maybe I should buy a few at Target and sell em on Ebay... o.o Target was fully stocked on both the Game, BBA, and Modem the last couple of times I was there...

I went to Target tonight, to get the game. (It has been in stock lately, though it hasn't always been listed on the shelf.) And, to my suprise, they had two BBAs there. So I got the game and a BBA.
My question is, should I go online now, or wait until we see if Sega's dealt with the FSOD/corruption?

I'd get online now, the FSOD's have toned down from what I've been hearing.

So far (offline), I've made 3 new characters and taken each through Forest once. All at Lvl 5.
- Wraith - HUmar - Bluefull
- ESRB - RAcaseal - Viridia
- Mrak - FOnewm - Pinkal

People are overreacting. In my experiences it's totally safe to go online. Or...at the same time maybe myself and thousands of others are just really lucky >_>

Funny, I've had more problems with disconnects BEFORE the double-save system was implemented then after. No FSoDs since double-saves started, either.

Not only is offline multiplayer lag present in 3 and 4 player... But also online with multiple people seabeds lags just as bad... It's not internet or network traffic. It's actually the fact that either ST made sloppy code or didn't use the GC to it's fullest. Either way, seabeds is where I've noticed it most. Offline you can notice it in forest... Online if you have a fo shooting out some high lvl techs and a couple other buddys whacking it's pretty darn messed up. Offline 4 player is so stinking laggy...
I think Nintendo should have said go back to the drawing board or heck. Let Nintendo themselfs fix the code so this doesn't occur. I want to play Cmode offline and get all the rares since I have at least 5 friends that can do it. But it's a nightmare doing Cmode with that much lag...

I'm still wondering how you people can say the offline multiplayer mode lags....
That's impossible.
You're saying the OFFline multiplayer game is latent?

Sorry to burst your bubble everyone, but the action replay does not stick in your modem slot. It's a 1028 memory card. Preloaded with codes from games released in the past year, thus meaning PSO was one of them.. if you don't believe me. Look at http://www.codejunkies.com their official site. I repeat, it does not fit in modem slot.

There are several different definitions of the word "lag"... the one they refer to being offline means it drags.. the game is sluggish..
Ever play a shooter game (Gradius, Silpheed, Ikaruga) and have 100+ things on the screen at the same time... and the game slows down.. it isnt supposed to do that... there are too many different things on the screen at once... it "lags".

Its slowdown, you don't see reviwers marking off games because they lag. I know what you're saying though.

I got set up and went online today. Everything worked fine. The only weird thing was the "certificate does not exist, check your Calendar" message, before trying to set up an account, but it went away after I tried the button a few more times.
Just like "old times" on the Dreamcast. Though I do miss the keyboard. Everyone was nice, no yelling jerks. No BSOD, FSOD, disconnects, etc. I kept running out of moons and pipes at the wrong times though. Heh. I think I was in Vega 10, Antares 1, and a little in Antares 8 lobby.

I've only ever noticed the lag once in 4-player split-screen, and it ended within moments. Some people might consider that a nightmare though, I guess...

Everyone is saying that it lags.
Does it lag that often in online because i was thinking about getting an Adapter.
Someone tell me if the 40 bucks is worth it.

Dude, this topic is almost 5 months old. Please don't bump old topics.
However, to answer your question: no, the server itself usually doesn't lag unless there's a lot of people in the same ship block. The majority of lag comes from the user's ISP.
