I don't like paying, but there has to be a cost to running the servers. Think about it from ST and Sega's position.

i dont like paying the fee either but we help st maintain the servers with our monthly payment.
yea i know they dont do a good job but still without that money online gameplay would be even worse

There is a price to pay for the servers... that is why you pay for xbox live. Miscrosoft handles the server duties, at least that is what has been said all along. Meaning that you shouldn't be paying sega the exact same amount as the GC guys pay... since the GC guys pay for updkeeping the servers AND all the extras.
From what I read, the HL fee is purely Sega... meaning you are just paying for an occaisional quest or bug fix.
I don't mind if Sega charges a HL fee to get online because of new content that gets released... but 8$ is a bit much... okay a lot much. It should be half that, like 4$.
My 2 cents

I dunno, I think it's just fine. It turns out that ST is maintaining the PSO server for X-Box. Guess they want some cash for doing quests and supporting special online events. I just think it's funny how all the X-Box fanboys(I have, and enjoy and X-Box) were all making fun of the people who bought it on GC for having to pay a fee and getting a version of the game with fewer character and features and worse graphics. That's what ya get, the EXACT same game with the SAME fee. Meh. My 2 cents.

Good one...
btw... Online petitions for anything to deal with gaming never work.
I would be really surprised if the Cardboard Samurai's (on Soul Calibur 2) petition works... and they have a god-awful amount of "signatures" on that

Three words: Get a job.
And in reply to TenguMan007 (just reading the name implies nonsense is coming), if you even KNEW anything about the XBox, you'd know it isn't just a "modified PC." Additionally, if you knew ANYTHING about the PSO games, you'd know the PC version of it is a port of PSOv2 for the Dreamcast AND NOT PSO Episodes I & II. They are NOT the same game.

Even if that petition was sent to microsoft, they'd hand it to Bill Gates so he can wipe his ass on it. And send it back to each and everyone of the stupid people who think's a petition would stop them from charging a monthly fee. Besides, its SEGA charging the fee. Not MS.

M$ is not going to listen to 325 people just because they whine about a fee. They would care less if they will lose some hundred people on a game that isnt even theirs. losing a couple hundred is nothing for this game is considered a MMORPG meaning 400,000+ people go on each day. Sonic Team probably cares if you guys don't want the fee but they cant do jack about it due to updates. Petition away this won't do anything just like all the other petition. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_smile.gif

I would be really surprised if the Cardboard Samurai's (on Soul Calibur 2) petition works... and they have a god-awful amount of "signatures" on that That's NEVER gonna happen. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif Funny as hell how many signatures they've gotten so far though (Penny-Arcade.com, that is).
Point being... PetitionOnline.com has been a source of much comic relief for me over the years, for better or worse. Most of the petitions on the site never have a prayer of doing any good. Anyone remember that one petition protesting a name change for "The Two Towers" after the 9/11 incident? I laughed pretty hard when a few people accused JRR Tolkien of being cold and insensitive. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_lol.gif
I'm certainly not comparing this PSO petition to any of those comedic works of GENIUS, but the chance of Sega lifting the fee from this version of PSO is miniscule, at the very least...
Even then... I think I'll sign it anyway for the hell of it. http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_nerd.gif

For me it's not about changing Microsoft's decision. It's about letting them know that they are making a mistake that is going to jeopardize a lot of the PSO community. By signing this petition I'm showing how outraged I am about how they are handling the situation. Server maintenance fees topped with little downloadable content doesn't justify a 9 dollar a month charge on your credit card. a lot MMORPG's charge around the same amount and they feature a persistent world, server based saving, and solid security that prevents a lot of cheating, PSO offers none of these features.
I encourage anyone that is even contemplating about purchasing Box PSO to reevaluate with these new circumstances that have surfaced. It's not "whining" about a fee, its about being a smart consumer and not letting yourself get ripped off.

While I'm still not sure if I'm going to get Xbox or GC PSO I will say that I am a bit disapointed in a fee, but we should have seen it coming. The more I thought about it the less it bugged me. From what I can tell the GC version has had a good amount of updates(comparing to DC ver.2) in the time released, AND Xbox will be getting these updates in the about the same timeframe. My main concern is how Xbox PSO will run in multiplayer compared to GC PSO.
But as for interesting numbers look at the poll on gamespot.com. 91%(over 20,000) said they will not pay for Xbox PSO. Of course A LOT of those people voting probably just hate Xbox so take it with a grain of salt.
EDIT: AAHHHH!! Typos!!

That kind of sucks, you can't play PSO without paying the fee, either.

Online petitions rarely work. If you want them to at least hear you out, you have to send physical mails, call them, and keep doing it.
A couple of hundred complaints generally don't have much of an effect.
You're probably better off not buying it. Vote with your money.

Well I was greatly looking forward to the X-Box release of PSO... but now I'm not so sure about it. For one, Microsoft should've been given control of the servers, so that players wouldn't have to pay for a Hunter's License, AND because Microsoft would do a much better job than Sonic Team does at managing the servers. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened.
Regarding the person who said "get a job," I wonder even if I do manage to get a job in this terrible economy (a lot of places I've enquired to have said they're on a "hiring freeze")whether or not I'll be able to afford playing PSO. Considering around 30 dollars a month for broadband internet, plus the cost of the game, plus the cost of X-Box Live, PLUS the cost of a Hunter's License, that's quite a lot of dough. Granted you do get a year of X-Box live for 50 bucks, and a Hunter's License for two months is included with the game, but still. With the lackluster job Sonic Team has been doing maintaining the servers, it seems like quite a lot of money going nowhere.
BUT, I do love PSO. I really want to play it. I was hooked on the Dreamcast PSO's, and I've been waiting so long for it to come to X-Box. *sigh*

i seriously doubt this feeble petition, or any petition for that matter, will change MicroSoft's, let alone $onicTeam's plans to include an additional fee for PSO. Think about it, if they didnt, what profits would ST receive for PSOX? nada. and how would they provide upgrades for PSOX? they wont! if you played ver1 for the DC, you know how "frequent" downloadable quests came. instead of wasting time making some petition, if you are of legal age, get a job to support your gaming habits!

luckily, microsoft will be maintaining/monitoring the servers, so hopfully there will be a cheat free enviroment as well as less occurences of FSOD's and BSOD's...even tho its more of a software than server problem

Phobos, read the news: Microsoft will NOT be running the XBox PSO servers. I repeat, NOT, Sonic Team will.
As in reply to the person who replied to my comment about getting a job, my comment was in reply to the $9 a month fee, not the whole package. And if you don't already have Broadband, then why the hell are you even getting XBox PSO. Oh, and around here, it sure as hell is not difficult to find a job; they may not pay a lot, but it's still a job. I'm still in high school, and with the minimum paying job around here, one could pay for that $9 fee in 2 hours, that's AFTER taxes. Wow, 2 hours of a work a month. Such a big deal. Get real.

For what Sega's doing they're not getting railroaded. There's plenty of ways ST could cut their costs to almost nill but they want to control everything and slap a large price tag on it.

from what i understood, is that the game would run on MS servers, while sonic team just provided the updates to MS. or is it that the game will still be on MS servers, but ST will monitor them? im lost here...

Lunar: Hrm... could it be maybe that I want to get broadband so I can play PSO?? I dunno, that might be it. And I'm very glad you live in an area with nice abundant jobs, but unfortunately I live here in the real world. Like I said, MANY places I've inquired to are on a hiring freeze. As in, they're not hiring any new people. And the other ones aren't going to hire me, because I have no job experience, and with all the people getting laid-off, there's a lot of competition for job openings. I'm sure that EVENTUALLY I could find a job, but it's going to take a while.
AND, yes, it's only 2 hours work to get the money for the Hunter's License. But I also have to pay for everything else, plus save money for a car, plus buy food, plus other expenses. Because some people don't have their mommy and daddy helping them out with everything (i.e. ME).
Anyways, I still want to get PSOX, but it's still ridiculous that you have to buy a Hunter's License. Maintaining servers is NOT that expensive, and from what I can tell Microsoft is going to be the ones actually running the servers anyway. Ten bucks a month so we can get 1 or 2 new quests every six months or so? And CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS? Gimme a break. The original PSO had decorations and updates and downloadable quests, but no Hunter's License.
