This is for all the people that are passing up pso cause theres a fee. Ok you get 2 months free. The game is 10$ cheaper then everyother game. The fee is 9$. When i had this game on dc it took me 2 months to get to level 100. Took me about another month to get to level 200 once version 2 came out. So thats 3 months(everyone following?) Well to play this game for 3 months it cost just as much as any other game. And you would probably be finished with this game after 3 months, maybe 4(how many games do u play for more than ONE month, other then halo, gr, and mech assault??) So i suggest you all rethink your decision cause this will be once of the best games for xbox live. Also why are people *****in that they can't play with other regions?? When i played the dc version(i played that alot) i never played with people that spoke other languages. The only way you can talk to them is through the word select system which is only a pain in the ass(its like playing the gc version with the onscreen keyboard which really sux)

Well, some of that doesn't really follow. I really don't wanna spend $80 or so on a game I'm gonna play for 3 months then toss, especially if i gotta chip in $50 a year plus $9 a month. I think we should give PSO credit for more replayability.
We already know that PSO Xbox is going to be virtually identical to the Gamecube version. I really don't think it makes any sense for someone who already has the Gamecube version to go out and get it for Xbox, at least not until we have a better reason to do so. However, if you haven't got it, and you have an Xbox... why not? It depends on how much you intend to play online. $50 a year is a damned steep surcharge to pay for playing just PSO, but if you play other games online, it doesn't hurt quite as bad.
Despite all of the rhetoric going around by both shameless Xbox fanboys and Xbox detractors, we really have NO idea how good the servers are/will be. It will take a month or two of playtime for the bugs to become apparent. I have no experience with Microsoft game servers of any type, so I'm not going to even bother to speculate. Mebbe someone can give us a report? The same goes for FSOD, character corruption, duping cheats etc.
PSO Xbox can only play with other players in the same area, but I don't think that will impact things much. Xbox, unlike Gamecube is primarily a North American gaming system. They're probably aren't going to be many players in other countries.
PSO Xbox DOES have a keyboard, which gives it a nice boost over Gamecube. But not an overwhelming one. We've managed pretty well without one of Gamecube, and alternatives are appearing.
Basically I don't really understand what all the fuss IS. There doesn't seem to be any really substantial difference between PSO Gamecube and PSO Xbox that anyone has yet demonstrated. They're the same game, on a different platform. Personally, I'd suggest buying the game for whichever platform you have or prefer, and leave it at that.

its not gonna cost you 80$ for the first 3 month. The game is 40 bucks and you have 2 months free online time, then after those 2 months its 9 bucks a month. So to play online for 3 months its gonna cost just as much as any other game

Sadly I think this fee thing is beginning to be blown out of porportion. I was one of the few or many that was a bit miffed by the fee and seperation. Getting PSO on Xbox is the same price as the GC version. The only glaring difference is the keyboard and that comes down to personal prefernce. As for me I was a PSO addict on the DC versions. My wife and I both played it for over 2 years so money does become a small(very) problem.
I do think the seperation is a bad idea, many people have friends in different countries and they will not be able to play together. I know I used to go onto the Europe severs to play when I was lonley on the US ones. Also I went to the Japanese servers to play challenge mode. However I think that in the future that MAY change.
So it's your choice:
Xbox, GC or none at all.

The fee thing wouldn't bother me if Sega at least guaranteed x number of quests would be available for United States gamers each month. As it is they had us pay for V.2 and the Gamecube version and delivered... what, exactly? Nothing really.
What really chaps me though is the whole Live situation. I don't have broadband so there's no point in buying Live. Because of that I won't be able to play this game AT ALL on my Xbox.
It bothered me so much that I just set this up... Anyone interested in helping to spread the word?
http://www.petitiononline.com/nbpso/petition.html
To: Sega, Inc. and Microsoft, Inc.
We the undersigned recognize that large companies pretty much ignore online petitions. That being said, this is to inform you that we are NOT going to purchase the game called "Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II" for the Microsoft Xbox.
The purpose of this petition is not to get you to change your mind, it's clear you don't care about your customer base. It's to let you know why a game that did so well on the Dreamcast and Gamecube ended up with such pitiful sales on the Xbox.
Point 1) The Xbox Live requirement. Speaking solely for myself, I don't have broadband internet access at home. Given my profession I don't need it. While previous versions of the game could be enjoyed without an internet connection it is not possible to play the Xbox version without an Xbox Live Gamertag and you have to have a broadband internet connection to enable that.
Point 2) The $8.95 a month fee. Yes, it's by and large a nominal fee. The problem is that your users aren't getting anything for it. "Server Maintenance", yes, of course. The same maintenance that happens on Diablo and Diablo II servers at no additional charge? The same servers that aren't being used once you join a 4-player peer to peer game? "Downloadable quests", you mean the same quests that were exclusive to the Japanese market on the Dreamcast and Gamecube and never saw the light of day in the United States? If you're going to charge a monthly fee then you must provide a monthly benefit for paying the fee otherwise it looks like you're just trying to milk your audience.
In conclusion I want to reiterate that we no longer care about trying to change your mind. That's as irrelevant to attempt as apparently our opinions are to your organizational structure. But when the game sells poorly we would like to direct you to this petition as the reason why.
To other companies considering supporting Xbox Live, don't let the failure of "Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II" frighten you. To have a successful title all you have to do is not take your potential customer base for granted.

Am i the only one that realises that xbox live is not a scam and that the PSO fee for the xbox is necessary?
1) Xbox Live allows the infrastructure of all online games to be similar as in; same name, same buddy list, no long registration for each game, voice chat in every game, a dedicated team maintaining the servers and everyone having a broadband connection. Not forgetting the military grade servers that keep the personal information nice and tucked safely away. That + a headset is not worth $49.99 or ?39.99?? It also allows you to play every live enabled game (so far) for free.
2) The hunters fee has to pay for the lobby servers, the extra content, the anti-hacking/anti-duping/etc. team and keeping the servers updated e.g. Christmas decorations.
Everyone who doesn't like the xbox live side of PSO has obviously not used it yet. The fact that it has more than one online game and it has the infrastructure in place for every future live game is pretty much worth it. Considering you have to pay for the Broadband Adapter which costs about the same as xbox live just confuses me but, its not my choice.
Buying a years subscription to xbox pso, xbox live and the actual PSO game works out less than 50 cents a day.

Only one reason I wont be getting the XBox version... I am on dial-up, and I can NOT get broadband where I live. I am not moving just to play PSO.

I agree with #1. I think Live is a fine idea. It's like paying for an ISP. The HL though is like paying to access a web page that has similar enough content that's available for free everywhere else.
2) The hunters fee has to pay for the lobby servers, the extra content, the anti-hacking/anti-duping/etc. team and keeping the servers updated e.g. Christmas decorations.
The problem is that the lobbery servers aren't that expensive to run. They can't be. I maintain 7 servers w/ 4 T1 lines myself, if Sega is forced to charge money or go broke then they are doing something horribly wrong.
As far as the extra content goes... they don't have a good track record of providing it to the U.S. market. Since the game first became available in 2001 how many quests have come online in the U.S.? 3? 4? Yeah, that's worth paying a monthly fee for... If they are going to bill me every month then they should provide new content EVERY MONTH.
(Sarcasm on.)The anti-hacking, cheating stuff has worked real well so far too (sarcasm off.)
As for the lobby decorations, all they're doing is recycling the ones that were available for the Dreamcast. Nothing new there and that dev time has already been paid for.
So what is the $9/month for again?

Well, I did pass up the Xbox version. After months of waiting. I went and got PSO and a BBA for GC on Saturday, and now I'm playing online. Finally.
Reasons why:
- Xbox Live really doesn't offer me anything presently. Nothing that doesn't already exist in PSO already. No other Live games interest me yet. So why should I pay for Live? What does it get me that PSO on GC doesn't offer? I don't really care about voice chat. If PSO Xbox does happen to get the USB keyboard adapter in the U.S. (which is still unclear at this point), that would be about the only advantage I can see.
- If I'm paying Sega and I'm paying Microsoft, what do I get from each? New quests and content from Sega doesn't come very often. Yes, Sega still runs maintenance... but MSFT runs the servers, right?
- Who knows what the fee for Xbox Live will be after the first 12 months. It could be $50/yr, it could be higher, and who knows if there will be any games (to me) worth playing by then?
- I was just pretty disgusted having to wait SO SO long for even a release date, and SO SO long for them to tell us whether it had fees or not.
So I decided to not wait, and just get the GC version now. And so far I am pleased.

The hunters fee has to pay for the lobby servers, the extra content, the anti-hacking/anti-duping/etc
that might be true on the GC, but remember that MS is taking care of the servers on Xbox, not sonic team.

as of now, your XBL renews at 49.95 after the first year, they tell you that when you first sign up
I was just pretty disgusted having to wait SO SO long for even a release date, and SO SO long for them to tell us whether it had fees or not
yea thats how we all feel, pretty much a sucker move to wait until 2 weeks before the supposed launch to tell gamers its a fee. that way if you went out and bought a xbox, xbox live, and broadband service, you pretty much already sold you soul to PSOX. Had they announced this any earlier, potential PSOX'ers, might have defected to the GC version...dirty tactic, but effective nonetheless...

I feel exactly the same way. Why in the hell was there something in place that made you have to have an X-Box Live account in order to play OFFLINE? And I would prefer that they delayed the release date a little in order to remove that, because that's just plain stupid.

Lol the first post that started this thread is ridiculous. Buy PSO for play it 3 months???? Someone that only wants it for that would already bought GC version because it came first.
And the worldwide play is something that sucks?? Oh c'mon is one of the best things PSO has.

3 OR 4 MONTHS? O_o Well my friend then you must not like PSO too much to buy it then. If I get a HL I won't be using it for "a while" Plus PSO is great for CASUAL players. Not only for those that have all the time in the world to play Oo; I myself can't find enough time sometimes with school bugging me. I took me much more than 4 months to get to level 100 and I never really got to level 200. So as you can see people play at different speeds. What I'll do is play thos two free months and if I like it then I'll pay for it. Otherwise I'll be sticking with my JPN GC PSO ^_^ with a super comfortable HL *_*

At first I was a little turned off to the idea that I have to pay 8.95 a month to play online, but hey we get 2 months of online play free? Sweet! So i dont have to play it EVERY day to feel like im getting my 8(err 9) bucks worth and that gives me time to decide if the game is really worth paying to play online.
I mean common guys, on one hand its 9 bucks, but on the other hand its ONLY 9 bucks. for those of us who work, and have a craving for gaming (pretty much everyone here i think) 9 bucks a month is a drop in the bucket. I can scrounge up 9 bucks in spare change RIGHT NOW. Bam, a whole month right there. And I can take that 9 bucks in quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies put in a jar, and then use it in the next 2 months of free play..... and when pso is looking for a little cash to let me play some more, then here is the 9 bucks giving me a litle bit more crack/PSO. Its not like I'm not going to be unable to pay the electricity and water bills. Does it stink that we have to pay? yeah it sure does. Would everyone like a little something for nothing? Sure. but with the internet gaming tuning more and more into pay to play titles it just natural that sega would do the same.
And besides, the xbox version is going to be broadband(THANK GOD, NO MORE DIAL UP TO PLAY THIS GAME) and its built in so i dont have to pay the 40 dollar rape charge for a broad band adapter for GC or with 56k people. (but wth the 50 extra you pay for xbox it probably works out even)
oh, and for the remark of leveling in a month, I didn't do it THAT fast, but something that works is that you go into a game with higher levels, and tag all the monsters with your gun . Easy way to get levels as long as you ask the higher levels that its ok that you do that. other than that dont be a leech =)

The reason i leveled so fast is because i played that nightmare quests sooooooo much. It's the one where theres like 50 monsters in each room. And as soon as i got v2 one of my friends already had some tricked out s-rank spread needle he gave me, and i could easily kill all the monster in ultimate even at lvl 100

It shouldnt take 2 months to get to lvl 100, unless you took your time, thats ok.
And i dont believe you about getting to lvl 200. You sound like you h4x. Unless you actually DID NOT put the controller down it took longer than a month to hit lvl 200.

Hmm it seem the gc owners are taking this thread the wrong way, this was aimed at people who wer goin to get the xbox verion who didnt already have it for gc, but decided to back out and not purchase the game because of the fee.And if you own an xbox and xboxlive, dont be a dumb ass and go buy a gc, network adapter, and key board just because u feel cheated by payin an xtra fee outside of the live one. You could play pso on xbox for like 3 years for the cost of gettin a gc and everythin and playin it for one month. And btw i been to forums where people have done this lol
