I can't answer for TOH nor Inuyasha's script.

I figured they put the poison rice in the hilt/scabbard to blind enemies on unsheath. Seen this one on that "Mind Body and Kicking moves" Awesome BBC program that ended up on late night Fox Sports Net Bay Area. Ninja rice attack.

Inuyasha said ninja food in the store and it made no sense in regards to that dream and one item question. He was freaked out at all the food available in the store though.
