Xbox Live Gold needed?

So I was thinking about playing this again but this time, trying out the 360 servers instead and I have a few questions. Mainly, the title of my topic. Is the Xbox Live Gold subscription needed to play online? Secondly, is the Live Messenger keypad computable with this game?

Yeah, USB keyboards are the way to go if you don't feel like using the headset. I have a wireless one so it makes playing much less tangled.
