I have noticed that a lot of us are asking those with copies of the game a lot of questions in various scattered threads. I also noticed that a lot of us are asking the same questions every now and then. So why not make it a tad bit easier and just throw in some general questions about the game in here? I'll get the ball rolling.

-So how many areas are there in the game? I remember a lot of us speculated that there might be as many as 8. (oh dont spoil any names or bosses for me, thanks)

Q.: Non player characters A.I., how good is it? Are they able to make themselves useful or are they little more than an extra target for enemies? How would you compare it to PSO and PSU?

Q.: Non player characters A.I., how good is it? Are they able to make themselves useful or are they little more than an extra target for enemies? How would you compare it to PSO and PSU?

Facts:

I've only managed to play through the first two levels, but for me the CPU works fine. They tend to simply ''run to death'' on some occaisons(in situations you would certainly know its suicide to go in anyways), but as soon as you enter a new room they'll be back with you. They're also nice to use as a ''operation: human shield'' when you're busy with other stuff, or simply to attack from afar. They manage on their own quite nicely though.

In short, this is what the cpu does:

- run at the first available enemy and attack with any means(no check if the attack's effective or not)
- heals itself when low on hp (in case of Resta/heal spell you get healed as well when close enough)
- follows you blindly, but will attack the first enemy sighted, regardless of your actions

Opinion:

I haven't played PSU, so I can't compare it with that, but I find the CPU just as useful and ''intelligent'' as in PSO ep 1&2.

I hope this helps! :)

That's a good question.

Q: That makes me curious, aside from story quests, do you even need to take them with you into the field or sub-quests? Id rather not drag around dead weight if i dont need to. (plus i like going solo)

I was a little afraid of that. Hopefully, there are no "Escort NPC and keep him alive – Fail if partner is killed" quest.

A: There has been no official word yet, But it is very likely that it will come out in both regions.
A:Yes the DS is region free, you can import to your hearts content.

You start off with a mission first, in which you are accompanied by a cpu. Ater you clear that mission (you MUST do it before you can enter any other field) you can choose to do a new mission after some story wise material or go out on exploring on your own.

Hope that helps!

Yeah, nice to know I dont always need the NPC party members when i go out to the field or do quests in story mode. Thanks

Q: Controls. It's been implied that R brings up a sub-selection, much like in PSO, and I'd suspect Y, B and A use the commands. X probably centers the camera, but I can't be sure. Is L (+ direction) dodge? What abouts does start and select do? X?

Check out http://pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=152527&page=18 someone posted a lot of info on what the buttons do near the bottom of that page.
Also Dodge is an Action Palette command so it can be A, B or Y.

-So how many areas are there in the game? I remember a lot of us speculated that there might be as many as 8. (oh dont spoil any names or bosses for me, thanks)

Seven so far, with two blocks per level with unique settings.

Q.: Non player characters A.I., how good is it? Are they able to make themselves useful or are they little more than an extra target for enemies? How would you compare it to PSO and PSU?

It's fine, you can command it with a menu. If you use that menu correctly, you'll be invincible basically.

You don't need to, but I would. They aren't dead weight so much more as they are free resta/buffs and a meat shield/distraction. Things get hectic.

In the outside part of the city, to the left of the weapon sellsman (looks like a gruff cowboy) is a girl. First option is buy, second is sell. Towards the button of her list is Techs. Look for Lvxx for easier help. Also, you find a ton of techs on the field. Techs are always on your fifth list on the item list.

Q : Can you use spells with weapons like sabers, shields, daggers or do you have to use a force weapon?

You can use spells with any weapon or barehanded, however Wands and Rods boost your spells power and your own magic stat, so there is a reason to use them while casting techs.
Also like PSO different weapons will give you different casting animations, though I haven't tested if any are faster than others yet.

alright for those of you that have it already.. a couple simple questions...

I usually make a HU but mechguns are like my favorite type of weapon. Can all the HU classes use mechs? has anyone stumbled across a duel sword special weapon yet like musashi or yamoto?

and last but not least...

Would I be able to learn the basic gameplay and menus by trial and error without having to look up words? I am a pso vet so the series is not new to me. This last question pretty much determines whether I will order it from play-asia or not so try to give me a good answer =).

My cast hunter can use mechs. Very useful in this game. Got me through 70% of the story.

Here is some general information that I have learned while playing that I think would be helpful. Some of this may have already been mentioned in this thread or elsewhere...

Guns dont use PP like in PSU, and they even have charged special attacks like melee weapons. Wands/staffs also have charged special attacks. And you can also fight unarmed like in PSO and use a charged special (my HUnewearl does a kind of chun-li rapid kick thing XD).

Something useful to know about techs. You seem to be only able to find 1 type of tech disk for each element (just a matter of finding higher lvl disks like PSO). But charging a tech will make you cast a higher rank of it.

For example charging foie will cast rafoie, and you have to charge resta to heal others around you. I'm not sure if its possible to get gi-type techs since I havent played around with techs much, but I'm guessing you are limited to 2 types per tech.

It would appear that mag's can be found with already lvl'ed stats, one mag I have found had 23 power/striking already on it. But its Photon Blast was the twins buff raising one (I dont remember the PSO name), while my lvl 17 pure striking had the same evolution but had an attack PB. Perhaps mags come with random PB's, I'm not sure about this.

To activate a PB when your PB guage is full, press L+R. You can hold L+R and use D-pad to turn your direction to aim it. Or hold it to allow others to stack their PB's with yours for more power (like in PSO using multiple PB's would increase attack power and buffs given).

Also mag's can be fed any item including weapons and armor like PSU's partner machines. I tend to feed mine melee weapons, though I may try feeding some guns later to increase dex.

I have heard some say that they found a rappy mag cell thats usable on a lv60+ mag. I have yet to get one myself.

When playing single player doing story or side quests with npc characters, your stylus-chat shortcuts will be replaced by npc commands. I have not worked out which each one does yet, but some seem to issue orders like heal, buff, or even use PB. Someone needs to make a list of these.

There are also lobby actions while in town by pressing L+D-pad, or L+R+D-pad for opposite sex actions.

In multiplayer item drops are not shared, everyone actually gets their own drops on their side. But the items each person gets are not the same as the ones gotten by other players in their game. I dont know if rare items are handled any different.

You are not able to drop an item in the field for others to pickup, the only option to drop just discards the item into nothingness. But there is an item trade option at the storage/info npc back in town.

It wobbles back and forth, vaguely resembles the new Rappy model but I personally don't like the look of it.

Level 70 one:

Sorry for the small images, no$gba runs at a tiny resolution and I couldn't be bothered to find a workaround just to take a few screenshots.

Rares work the same way, everyone gets different items both from crates and the chests that appear when you clear a room/boss.

NPC battle commands
* "Free order" tells an NPC to freely go into battle.
* "Attack shift" tells an NPC to go into an offensive mode.
* "Shooter sight" tells an NPC to use long-ranged attacks.
* "Heal order" tells an NPC to focus on healing.
* "Follow order" tells an NPC to stick close to the party leader.
* "PB release" tells an NPC to use their photon blast.
* "PB chain" tells an NPC to chain their photon blast with the leader's.

So wait....does that mean if like say I pick up a monomate. It will still be there on someone elses screen until they pick up their version of what has dropped? Or does it happen like, I pick up a monomate. And everyone gets a random item?

Monsters don't actually drop items anymore. Once you clear a room a chest appears which has all your pooled drops. When you break the chest all the items pop out but everyone gets different ones, so on my screen there might be 2 Meseta's, a Monomate and a sword, but on someone elses screen there could be 2 swords, a gun and 2 Meseta. Crates work the same way, when you break it a different item spawns on everyones screen. No more lootwhoring and worrying about people stealing drops.

I noticed the bank/storage girl will give you items sometimes when you choose the bottom option there. I'm guessing this is for filling certian requirements? She usually gives materials or grinders, though I've gotten a few weapons from her, including a pretty sweet black double ended scythe double saber. :O

Okay, you can put frames on armour if your armour has slots available. To find out if you have slots available:

Press Start
2nd Option down on the Menu

You'l see all your equipped items on this screen. If you have slots to use, you should have a branch or more off the armour with a frame slot. Click on this and select a slot to equip.

I found out the hard way you cant equip slot's from the normal item menu and accidentally threw away a Hero PP frame.

I hope this helps and that I understood your problem!

1 stat on the MAG = 1 stat on your character for all 4 stats. Max MAG level is 100, no limit on each stat, I have 100 Power and 0 Defence/Guard/Tech. If you mean your actual character stats I have no idea, I'm up to 793 ATP at level 58, I'm guessing it'll cap at 999 though.

Bottom option in the bank NPC. More precisely, if we look and believe the percentage of the average achievements, it seems that there are 90 to 100 to complete. Or i tottally fail at maths, but i did ten achievements and it tell me 10% on the upper right corner :3

So now that we've established that you can cast techniques without a "caster" weapon equipped (thank you very much, by the way)...

Q: Are there really only the four costumes for each non-Android character class, or are there more than previously mentioned, or possibly even sign of unlockable ones?

Q: How are Slicers? While the blade is out (as previous information suggests there can only be one blade out at a time, like a boomerang that's being thrown), can you perform unarmed melee attacks?

There are actually 5 outfit colours, its just that there are only 4 heads to choose from. No unlockable ones have been found as far as I'm aware.

Slicers are ranked as tech weapons now for some bizare reason. Yes there is only one blade, but you can combo the one blade in 3 attacks like any other weapon. You sorta command it to fly around a bit longer waving your arm left and right. The one photon art I've seen on slicers so far makes you throw it into the ground then make it pop right up again in front of you making a splash attack at close range.

Every class has the exact same amount of possible variations, linked for huge pic
http://img68.imageshack.us/img68/4769/charactersda7.png
Top option = hair/hat type
Second option = hair colour
Third option = outfit colour
Fourth option = skin colour
Fifth option = voice
Sixth option = starter MAG colour

Q: How are Slicers? While the blade is out (as previous information suggests there can only be one blade out at a time, like a boomerang that's being thrown), can you perform unarmed melee attacks?
Slicers are force weapons now (never played PSU, dunno if it was the same in that), the attack isn't very strong and it seems rather shaky with whether or not it actually wants to hit or not because of the way chain attacks work (second hit will often not even hit the enemy from my small amount of playing around with them), but you do get a tech boost with it equipped too, so you can still do good magic damage without having to switch weapons.

Edit: Beaten, guess SSing every character was a bit OTT. :P

Any idea if the unarmed attacks are using the attack power after adjusting via the Slicer's attack power, or is it purely your unarmed strength?

Can anyone shed some light on the effects of the shop in the "main square" that's not the weapon/armor or the mates/fluids shop? I know it has something to do with adding something to weapons, but I can't really figure it out.

The first option cost me 6000 meseta yesterday, and the second around 10k? I didn't do either because I didn't know what it was...

Also, the sewer shop - is there a solid translation of the items you can buy and the "effects" you can buy and such?

you use element upgrade items to add elements to items with no element allread on them, price depends on rating of the item your upgrading.

2nd option buys max grinded weps

Is there only one way of casting techs? Do you have to have them assigned to your palette? Reason I ask is because back in PSO you didn't have to put rarely used techs like Shifta and Deband in your palette you could just use them with the quick menu when you needed to. But now it seems like if you want to use shifta and deband you gotta have it equipped all the time, or waste time and equip, cast S/D, and then change your palette back to what you had. Please tell me there is some other way to cast techs!!

Do the techs change in appearance as you get higher level discs like in PSO? I know it's kind of silly but it's one of the things keeping me on the edge between HUnewearl or a FOnewearl. My copy arrives this weekend and I just can't decide

Zarode

They appear to get bigger as you level them (tech disks, no PSU leveling bullsnub), but it's very small changes. Nothing huge like the difference in lv15 foie and lv16 foie in PSO.

That's interesting to hear. Wasn't expecting anything major like PSO anyways since it is on the DS afterall and psu's tech leveling made me hate forces on it. Now I'm just wondering how tech damage stacks up compared to physical damage. I really enjoy magic classes and melée classes in PSO and other dungeon crawlers but I like having my main being able to do decent damage. I remember in PSO tech damage dominate normal hard and v.hard but atleast early on in ultimate it was seriously lacking.

Well I only have a level 5 FOmarl but as far as melee vs tech damage goes, I do slightly more damage with Techs ie. I'll do 50 melee then 65 with a tech. I can generally melee for most of an area and save techs for tougher enemies or enemies it would be dangerous for my poor FOmarl to melee with.

I play FOmar, which is a hybrid of its own right, and my girlfriend plays HUmarl, and we're about equal all around. On bosses she has a clear advantage, but in crowds I can dominate with a few charged Techniques.

We're only Lv30 just about, so it's a bit early to be drawing conclusions.

How big are the area's? are they as big as PSO's? or as small as PSU's.

Interesting.

I suppose my question is more or less the same as aarosmashguy's;

Dothe levels have more in common with what was in PSO or are they more like what was in PSU.

Same thing goes for overall mission structure.

I found this in an earlier topic. I'm pretty sure all of it is correct..

* HUmar: Possesses a balanced growth rate, specialist in melee-type weapons. Able to use techniques, a character with great overall balance.
* HUmarl: Lower ATP than the HUmar, compensated with more ATA/EVP. Able to use techniques, an all-purpose character.
* RAmar: Mainly uses gun-type weapons, has high ATA that helps him not to miss. Able to handle some techniques.
* RAmarl: Her specialty are gun-type weapons. Top class ATA, she's able to use some techniques.
* FOmar: High MST, he's able to use every technique*. It's possible to use him for close range combat at higher levels.
* FOmarl: Not suited for close range combat, top class MST, able to use every technique.
* HUnewm: Low HP/DFP, but his excellent EVP/MST make him an expert on close/long range combat.
* HUnewearl: Possesses the highest EVP, and is able to handle both close combat and techniques equally.
* FOnewm: Low DFP, top class MST, able to use every technique.
* FOnewearl: The highest MST of any class make her a technique expert, her low DFP makes her not suitable for close range combat.
* HUcast: An expert at close range combat, possesses the highest ATP/HP, but he is unable to use techniques.
* HUcaseal: Top class ATP/DFP, possesses every ability necessary for close range combat. Can't use technique
* RAcast: ATP/DFP grow at a balanced rate, top class ATA, Unable to use techniques.
* Racaseal: Possesses the highest ATA, Unable to use techniques.

Holding L + Start brings up the item menu.
Holding R + Start brings up the equip menu.

are the shortcuts. If its anything like pso then it shouldn't be slow at all.

Are these approximations made using the same weapon, and what weapon(s) are being used?

The lack of any way of casting techniques that aren't part of the action palette is incredibly disappointing, not to mention mundane and redundant. Part of the reason for it existing, in the first place, was to allow you to be able to cast your support techniques, which last several minutes, while having the techniques you commonly cast available to the action palette.

On that note...

Q: How long do support techniques last?

I was just using the basic lv1 req. Rod and comparing it with a low level foie, equipping nothing that boosts attack, my attacks always only did slightly less than my techniques... at least when I was attacking enemies where fire is effective.
It was just to point out that meleeing is an option for Forces even early on.

Also I just cast Zalure lv7 and it lasted around 50 seconds, apparently duration is based solely on level so take from that what you will.

1.So how much longevity and replay value does this game have for those of you who already have it? Do you see yourself sinking a lot of time into the game or coming back to it again and again through out the year?

2. How is the sound? was famitsu right? is it too soft? Also, in general are the music and sound effects high quality regardless of whether its too soft or not? (good for the ds i mean, not below the standard of an average ds game.)

No, famistew is pretty wrong and stupid in that regards. They must be deaf after dealing with so many games.

tech damage sucks in older pso/psu games!

Welp, no worried, I'm able to do double or triple my melee damage output with a single tech. It's strong, period. I think Sega finally understands if they are going to charge PP for moves, they should make them ALL balanced.

Also, the Leek from that Vocaloid game or whatever is awesome. 2 PP charge move, but it casts a random lv4 tech, most common being foie/barta/zonde, uncommon being ar-resta/megid/grants/ar-anti/ar-shifta/ar-deband/ar-jellon/ar-zalure.

Ehehehe, it's fun to use. The only draw back is it has a little start up time before the attack goes through.

I think they meant it was quiet in a music style sense. Alot of Phantasy Star tracks have a sort of electric, techy and beaty feel to them, and I'm not too fond of Phantasy Star Zero's music because it lacks that. I find it very difficult to describe what I mean when it comes to music, so I'l just do a sort of comparison. My favourite track from PSO was Tricktrack part 2.

Actually, the reason why the PSO/PS0 soundtracks sound very "techno-y" or anything like that is because both of them were made with a midi set. PSO has an interesting set of music, but I wouldn't just coin it electronic. And the music really isn't that quiet. It has presence, we're just not used to it.

There are several anime cutscenes in story mode and its not bad voice acting just grainy recording, maybe I'm expecting too much from the DS?
Other than that the voices are just the grunts and moans your character says when you attack or get hit, and they're the same grainy quality, theres actually an option in character creation to have no voice. Just seems like a feature they didnt really need, PSO was fine without voices

Also to trade with other players online you both need to talk to the bank girl and pick the 3rd option, everything then on will be pretty straight forward.

So far I've seen four;

One is a Centaur type creature that rears up then dashes straight forward, seems quite powerful but you have to aim it well.

Theres a sort of Flying Stone Bird that does a circle around the arena raining lightning down, it seems to hit everywhere in your current room and its also pretty powerful.

The Twins Photon Blast from PSO returns, different twins but the same effect, casting Shifta and Deband on you (and anyone who chains with you)

Lastly a sort of Golden Flying Dragon that seems to fly around a bit but doesnt do any damage, instead it seems to bestow some beneficial status on you but I dont know what it is. After you use it you get surrounded by glowing yellow lines, other than that I dont know its effects.

Okay, I knew there was a phase of people asking where the medical center was in PSZ like there was in PSO, and I seem to have found the closest thing to it.

When playing an area or quest, if you close it off at the counter, you'l instantly recover your HP and PP that you had lost.

I imagine thats in place to prevent people from telepiping and going to the medical center during a quest or area making it easier to clear, as the medical center in PSO was dirt cheap.

Some of the message recordings reference stronger variants of enemies signified by a white shadow, so yeah they're meant to be there. They're stronger than a regular version of the enemy and they give more exp. They apparently give better drops also but I've never noticed anything great after beating a room which had one. Probably just a slightly better chance at rares.

The context being cheap heals from the clinic? The cost of a pipe isn't really any more irrelevant than the cost of buying mates. Once you get to the point where monos won't do the trick you're rolling in the meseta anyway.

The real cost is inventory.

What was the home planet called in PSO again?

In the 亡き母の記憶 quest, the team finds a console with an interesting entry. It calls the earth "Coral" and the moon "Arka." (Alka?) This pangs with something in PSO but I can't seem to recall it at the moment since I haven't played it ages. Does this ring any bells for anyone with a better memory than me?

Without checking anything I'm almost certain Coral was the planet that Pioneer 1 and 2 left because it was dying... (if its not Coral then its something that sounds a heck of a lot like it, because my brain also went "ding" when I heard Coral.)

Generally anything that sells for 10 meseta in a shop is considered 'rare', that goes for the special weapons eg. Lavis Cannon etc and the gag weapons like the Watering Can Gun.
It doesnt include the 6* and 7* normal weapons because they arent 'rare', they come in a red box but theyre just the top of the line of that type of weapon, theyre powerful and hard to get but theyre not 'rare' according to the game.

ATP will always be the same, ATA will always be the same unless the weapon has a Hit addition underneath the % creature type effectiveness.
What may be confusing you is the different types of weapons, for example there are in fact three Sabers that are all 1* rarity, usable by all classes and Lv1 Req to use it, however they are in fact different weapons, you can tell from the name, ATP and ATA, or by looking at the visuals of the weapon.

Well, I just got the game today and although I'm able to play this thanks to my countless hours of PSO play, I do have some important questions:

1- Where the hell is the nurse that can heal me for $10 in this western looking town?

2- How do I sort my items manually?

3- Is there a Mat limit on characters like in V3/BB?

4- Anyway I switch the confirm and cancel buttons somewhere else (kind of weird pressing the east button instead of the south button to confirm and stuff)

5- Can I switch the D-pad and buttons since I'm left handed?

6- Can I move somehow when looking in the menu?

7- Anyway to use TECHs that aren't in your 6 shortcuts (like in PSO)?

xSHiNOx

1. no nurse. you can either buy and use healing items, heal with your own resta (if you're not a cast), or do a new quest.

2. you cant.

3. humans are 100, casts and newmans are 80.

4. no. this isnt the ps2/360.

5. no. why would you? would you switch the dpad and buttons on a nes/snes/psx/ps2/360 controller?

6. nope. its not like the dc pso.

7. no. you must put them in your action palette to use them.

2. You don't. They sort themselve.
3. Yes, use the shoulder buttons to head to the fourth tab in the main menu and you can see what and how many mats you've used of your total.
4. No.

You haven't played to many games on the DS have you. Most games that use the stylus will allow you to switch from left handed to right handed.

The problem with what you're thinking is that PS Zero uses the stylus. Apart from chat it really doesnt at all for anything gameplay related (except opening the map).
Then of course knowing that you should realise why you cant move around and navigate menus... the DS only has 1 D-pad.

i have played many ds games that uses the stylus and i am right handed. i believe all ds games that uses mostly the stylus should also let you use it if you're left handed BUT psz does not need it unless you want to chat or look at map.

pc pso =/= console/handheld pso games meaning theres no reason to change the dpad and buttons with each other if you're left handed.

Using the Dreamcast's trick of using the buttons for movement, the DS can allow the user to choose either the D-pad or face buttons to move your character in a game. Metroid Prime Hunter would be a fine example.

I doubt they'd go to the trouble of making an alternate control scheme just for moving when a menu is open, its just not important enough.
The fact is they didnt even have to create any complicated button layouts, all they had to do was make menus touchscreen navigable seeing as all the menus are on the touch screen anyway, but they didnt so the point is moot.

The least they could have done was allow menu navigation with the touch screen, so you can move and attack and stuff with the menu open without needing to really change the control scheme.

I'm thinking he's asking more along the line of if there actually is a cap to any of the stats - so as to plan out your material usage around hitting the cap for a certain attribute.

Perhaps there isn't an actual stat cap - just a theoretical cap for if you put all of your materials into one stat, but no enforces cap, otherwise. I'm curious about this, too.

Ultie

top option is add element's to your weapon from the element items in your invent. only NON rare items can have their element's changed.(weps that don't sell for 10 meseta)

2nd option is add allignment's to your max grinded weapon. this can be done once per weapon and it adds 5, 10 or 15% at random to the allignment you choose, afterwards it makes the weapon name red and you can't add any more to it. the price depends on the weapon ranking.

there is no stat cap.

Heal Traps! Ice doesn't hold enemies long enough but fire works wonders on the big guys. Light are ok against packs of enemies but the best trap for team play is heal in my opinion. I have a question again... XD

I heard that you can feed your Mags weapons and armor now. I also heard that, for example, if you feed a mag a Sword or something of the like, it's Power goes up but its Guard goes down.

So, my question is: Because your Mags effect your stats, if you feed your mag, say, all swords... while your ATP would go up, would your DFP go down or stay the same?

Bad Dirt Marvel
Dec 23, 2009, 01:11 PM
Your DFP will stay the same. If any progress is made toward gaining a level in DFP, that could be removed, but your mag will not be de-leveled in any stat. Feeding a mag weapons and armor makes it really easy to get the exact stats you want. Just worry about what you're increasing and know that you won't lose any levels.
