MAG - Photon Blast question

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but am a little confused over how to correctly use my MAG's photon attack when it charged up and flashing. Basically I have been facing the enemies and holding down the left and right shoulders which sets it off - however, all I get is a shifta and deband buff and no damage to the enemies??

Is this right?

Btw, my mag is levelled up to lev 64 and looking at the pictures is a Rappy Mag (having been fed the required unit)

It depends on your PB of course. Your PB buffs you and debuffs the enemies a bit.

Ah, ok, - just wondered if there was a way to choose what PB to use like in PSO. Whatever my PB is, it does not seem to do any physical damage to the enemy - still, looks cool :)
