View Full Version : PSU Do you do your bit for newbs?

In the first ever epic episode of "Random Stuff Talk", we shall talk about what you do to help out new players~. ... I just felt like doing this for the sake of interest and such.

Anyway, the question is clear. Do you do your part to help out any newbie that may be running around? There are quite a few that do...but most often you never see them again the next day. That worries me. It's like they think they're not treated fairly enough. Or it's just their quick assumption that the game fails 'cause the community is so small (gee, I wonder why).

Sure, I see plenty of newbies running around myself...I will often try to help them out. Most are too blatantly difficult, but rarely I find good people with 'nuff common sense to listen and enjoy the game. And if they ask questions about the game, I'm willing to answer right away...unless if someone else beats me to it.

So...what do you people do for a newb?

Usually if someone has a question about the game I'll point them in the right direction or give my opinion on it but I can't say I actually run missions with a lot of newer players. I attempted to help some newer players out in missions a while ago on my techer and got booted a lot for being too high of a level. :(

Yes, I do part. I sell them grinded A ranks in my shop so they don't have to do it. :D

I'll also answer any question they have about hunting/searching for weapons.

start them out with some money for clothes and b rank weps when they can use them, then ill help them level as well...made a few friends this way.

i'll sometimes join a party i see going if there's a solo newbie in it, just to see if they need any help since i can heal/buff 'em and give what info i can. or they're a low-leveled person on an alt, i can at least help them level. :P

i've noticed that some newbies simply vanish as well. still have a few on my card list that played for a few days, then i've never seen them online after that.

I'd help if I ever found one.
I rarely see anyone who's genuinly 'new' and not just some alt or bank-char. I did help one guy once because he asked how to get to the casino while I was running across Dagora. But if someone asks something information wise I always help out.

I'm wary (like most people here) of helping out with like 'stuff' (unlike in PSO where you could drop people like 500k) because of the whole dissappearing thing. It's like a waste to give someone your old stuff/the 50th darn "Rare" you got that day if they're just going to quit with it 1 week later and it gets canned along with their account.

Yeah...rather disheartening, isn't it? That's happened to me a lot as well. It would be very nice if more of these newbies were more devoted players...that oughta promote things a tad bit better.

Honestly, when I was a newbie, I never really got any help besides from my friends (who followed me to the game).
I ended up finding a relic edge at level...I dunno, 12. >.>
I got really lucky in my earlier levels.

The only time anyone has 'helped' me and made it obvious, was when some dude gave me his grand cross for free, instead of taking my offer.

I've never really helped any newbies, because majority of the time they're just old players with new characters. (Check character ID, it'll be obvious), they beg, or they never ask. xD

i was fortunate when i made my character a few months back. i kept coming across people who helped me out, or gave me weapons/equipment to really help get me started. it made me feel included and more then happy to play some more.

it is indeed disheartening when they just go.. i guess the game just wasn't for them. ^^; i've nothing really i could give away to be honest, but i'd more then happily let them take all the items that drop on a mission.

Often others ask for rides to places they dont have unlocked, I often ask them if they'd like to run a C rank misson with me. Some leave, wich I dont mind. It only means a meseta run. Though for those who often did a run with me. I give out S ranks.;-)

I help new players when they ask for help. I met a couple of people this way and helped them level and expand on their gear. Sadly most of them get bored and quit. All you can do when that happens is move on.

I help out new players a lot. I often help them level, and supply them with cheap A and S rank gear. Sure, usually I never see them again, but I got to where I am at by myself most of them time, so I try to provide good company for people. I also answer any questions to the best of my ability.

I don't play with randoms very often so I don't get many chances to help out new players, but I've answered some questions from a couple people that visited my room. Also, when I didn't need my low-level gear anymore I sold it pretty cheap in my shop, much cheaper than the NPC anyway.

I used to give out money, but I stopped doing that because making a newb rich really doesn't help them in the long run. In fact, I think it just makes them bored quicker. I have helped new people, and I'm always happy to help them if they're cool enough. Unfortunately, I haven't run into many recently. Maybe because I've been busier.

Ya i gave up tryin to help new players, me being somewhat new myself, highest character is 134, but i'll join a random group and they'll be whining that my level is to high and when i tell them i'm just there to lend a hand i get a cocky "And why would i need your help" remark. And then i get pissed cause their acting like retards and i respond with "Ya i can see you dont need my help, cause that level 5 booma killed you 8 times already in 2 minutes, glad to see you have things under control" then i leave lol

Answer to OP :

Hell no, I'm too busy taking care of my own self.
Not to add most of the male newbies I come across to in random universes when I'm soloing can't seem to do anything but hitting on my beast. That's getting pretty annoying after a while.

Back in december,I helped like 10 newbies.I gave them rides, answer for their questions, played with them, gave over 20 millions, bought S weapons so they can have a motivation to lvl up and equip their gears. We should do our best to keep them.Population won't grow up if you don't do your part.

I help newbies every so often. If a 40k+ ID player wanders into my store while I'm there, I usually just give them whatever it is they're looking at (unless it's something like a max grinded weapon or something, obv.). I don't give away free money, though.

I give out advice as well, to returning players and to new ones. The most common question I get is about what's a well-balanced palette. Then it's about the new missions. Sometimes they card me, but chances are I'll never see them again.

I hope I can get more people to stay, but if not then ehh. That equipment I gave them, I wasn't using it, and it wasn't selling anyway.

I tell the to go to PSO-World and ask you guys for help! Jk, I just tell them go to your room and talk to your pm.

Jan 20, 2009, 04:09 AM
I will help new players if they actually listen and at least try to act clever, taking the initiative to find out about things themselves. I've a real-life friend who I play PSOBB with. He knows more little facts about items than I do now. :D In PSOBB I just give my random stuff away that I never plan on using.

Here, I'm more a newb myself to be honest. I usually solo, so meeting (new) players is a bit out of the question. Though I won't hesitate to help them with the game itself if I was asked. I don't have any decent stuff to give them though. Usually, they're more devoted than I am and get a cheap S-rank in a few days. Just to outlevel me after that. ^^;

Jan 20, 2009, 07:15 AM
I only help if they acknowledge me and either try to talk, or actually ask for a little help (I don't mean beg either.)

Last time I helped a newb, I gave them a simple 20% Gekitsnata (it was a failed synthesis.) They are currently about level 120 after I pointed them into the way of White Beast... Kill me, I know...

If I find someone new to the game (or someone who's not neccessarily new, but returning from a looooong break like my one friend is), then I try to help them out a bit, give them advice, maybe mark a few lobbies for them (like the Casino, so they can get their free money every day). I also try to find out what weapons they want and if possible, make them a gift of one or two A-rank weapons they can use. Either that, or give them a bit of cash to get themselves started with their job.

I'll never not help a new guy out, unless they end up being a total jack***, in which case they're on their own, since they're so perfect and awesome and everything. Then, I might give out some false info, like "You want your armor as the opposing element of what the monsters are, that's how it's set up. And use the same element on the monsters, that's why it's set like that."

the kind of newbie i refuse to help are the seriously rude type. had one join my game once, refused to reply to anything i said other to go 'hmph' and 'pathetic' at me, then demanded 1000k off me like they were entitled to a share of my money. oO;
another one tried to end my buff party, i managed to boot him before he finished the mission.

silvx, i prefer egg thieves for quick MP.. but WB seems to be the most popular due to the exp/mp and items dropped. ^^

I'll help under one condition.

They have decent online etiquette.

Not "Perfect Spelling", but just so long as they aren't being a little turd, or demand stuff from me. I actually had one new person demand for me to help them with some low level runs. That stuff just ticks me off.

Just overlooking some of the previous responses (sometimes I get too "post-happy") and I have to say when asked about my palette I usually recommend at first they try to get one of every element on there if they're short on money. If they have some extra, try to get a few that would help on whatever's being spammed at the moment (but never be without one of each element in storage). That's helped me get quite far in the game, and I'm sure it'll help whoever else is out there.

I also tell them to specialize at first, maybe work on 2-4 weapon types (I personally picked 3 for each character). After all those PAs are maxed, work on something else if they want. And for new people using guns, I recommend buying a minimum of 2 PAs for each gun, and all different elements until they can afford the others for every gun. Again, it won't take long to get all 6 for each weapon, but at least you'll have options when you fight something else.

They have more then enough resources/materials to read and get into the game at this point, stuff we all had to learn first hand.

If a nub refuses to use 2+ years of documented resources, or doesn't attempt to learn the game first hand, they are just that...a nub.

I'll only help those who actually ask for it. If they don't, I'm not going to "do my part and reach out to them". They have other resources, and I have better things to do.

I'm more than willing to help out a new guy, as long as they don't beg. Matter of fact, I often will give them stuff AS LONG AS THEY DON'T BEG.

On another note, a shout out to two characters who have been helping me online while I'm leveling my newest alt (not sure if they post on PSOW). Vanilla and Mazarushi, thanks a lot. You guys are cool.

I helped like over 14 new peope in this game. I helped by lvling there classes to 10 so they can be fortes. I also helped some people lvl up to lv40. Its easy for me to help out people in this game since im a lvl98 newman lv20 fortetecher, attack techs lv39+ healing techs 50, and support techs "buffs" lvl 40. By the way if anyone needs a technic player for buffs and healing add me my Gt "Japanese teen" i care more about helping the team out in support.

Every now and then I'll randomly join a new player at LL, take them on a tour of the planets, show them some different missions, give them a little cash for PAs if they accept it, show them where they're most likely to find a party and meet new people, and then I give them my card if they need anything else.

Not many stay, but I'm sure they appreciate what I do, and I guess I feel good for doing something for new player retention. I think that I helped Noblewine get started some time ago, but I can't remember well enough to put money on it.

I don't consider anyone "noobs" myself. On topic though, I sometimes give them money for whatever they may want. I'm just not the type of person to say "Money drops in a mission. Go do some for crying out loud." or "We earned our money, why can't you earn your's?" I'll join a low level party so that person can get their class up. I'm just not the rude type and never has been. I like when they appreciate things. I get more kicks outta that then making myself better on the game.

I give free money to beggars, under 4 circumstances.

1. They aren't spamming shouting bubbles or with all-caps, or with misspelled words.
2. They are polite, and don't act like morons.
3. They know exactly how much they want. If it's over 100k, I want to know what it's for. If it's over 300k I generally won't do it.
4. They are over 95k player ID

I think it is nice to help people every now and then with money donation, however they must deserve it. I make an effort to not be a (expletive).
