What's up with the names?

I was just wondering how everybody chose the name for their PSO character. Some people might just have dreamed something up they thought sounded cool. But then again many people will probably have taken their name from a book, game or movie or even connect some kind of higher meaning with it. So, where did the inspiration for your PSO character come from?

For me, the inspiration for Neon Samurai came from the Shadowrun P&P RPG. He's a decker who appears in many of the rulebooks. Apart from that I always was a fan of japanese Middle age related fiction, Samurais and Ninjas and all that stuff. Since I play an golden Android with a Samurai helmet shaped head, it is rather fitting.

My name (as I mentioned in an obscure post long ago) is based on Nei from Phantasy Star 2.
I liked how the perfect guide described the Nei plot.
She was a character that died in the plot battle against her "clone" Neifirst. This was truely a gutpunch to the gamers of the era that were not really used to such brutal plottwists. Back then it was all about saving the princess. The good guys always win and the bad guys always lost. It was brilliant at the time.
Anyways I have always like the Nei character and when I heard PSO was coming out I knew I wanted to play a character like her. I also wanted to avoid being a pure copy which I would consider totally bland and unimaginative.
So since there was a Neifirst I thought there could be a Neisecond, a Neithird...so I created Neinth as in Nei to the Nth power.

btw Neon_Sammy your char looks cool. If I could handle having no tp I would make a char that looks the role of a samari.

While it is very interesting to hear the reason for the names, it is completely unnecessary to give away detailed plot information that has nothing to do with the naming in these explanations. If you have to PLEASE add a spoiler warning or simply outline it.

And don't give me that "ten year old game" bullshit. Especially now that people have become fans of PS through PSO they may want to check out the older games. Not everyone has played them goddammit.

No offence to you Neinth but spoiling sucks major ass, I have had games ruined due to it, as I'm sure many others have. So, everyone, please refrain from doing so or at least add spoiler warnings.

My name 'Russian' comes from the Street Fighter character Zangief.

I was a hardcore Fighting Game player for many years. I was very competitive, then I just lost the will to compete. PSO provided me with a cooperative environment, which I prefer very much over the hostile competition.

Through my friends (and a long string of inside jokes) Zangief became known as "Big Russian", and I ended up using that name online for a long time.

I named my RaCast DRK-SK-7 because I wanted a very android-like name. So my character is a DRK variation of the SK model assault 'droid, production number 7. But there is another reason behind the name, I'm a member of a gaming clan called the Shadow Knights(that's where the SK comes in) and the name I usually use is DARKSIDE(generally shortened to DARK... then DRK in this game) and I just added the 7 because I thought it sounded good.

All of my character's are original creation names, but one in particular has a root in his name. Renshair Wensher...

Renshair is a derivative of Renshai, which is a tribe of golden-haired reavers. Most of them dual wield, and they were hated for most (if not all) of their existence. If you want to know more, search for Renshai at the library...especially if you love books with swordfighting in 'em. Wensher came about because I happened to be thinking about Wesker at the time (of Resident Evil fame...which I never liked by the way ::shrugs:http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif.

In addition it happens rather early in the game. Not like a game ending spoiler.
Now I can understand including a Spoiler warning. I probabally would have if I considered this a spoiler. But yes you will have to accept that it's an old old game and I feel free to discuss it.

Hey guys- this is my first post so be gentle!

I have two characters- Gygax, who is named after the co-creator of the original D&D game, Gary Gygax.

My second character is named Namor Rom- he is (in the rich fantasy world of my mind) a decendant of ROM the Spaceknight, a 80's toy and comic book series from Marvel. The Namor part is from another Marvel character (and friend of ROM) The Submariner.

I could understand the "It's ten years old!" argument if this were a board specifically devoted to PSII (or SMBII :P), but... as Neon said, PSO is bringing in new fans of the series... and finding PSII is very difficult nowadays. Not everyone who wants to play it has managed to get his/her hands on a copy yet.

The fact that the Perfect Guide mentioned that particular plot point does *not* make it okay. They shouldn't have done it, either... and besides, they at least had the decency to be vague about it.

Maybe I'm missing another part that discusses Nei, but it seemed to me what little the perfect guide said about her was intentionally vague.
Especially notable is the much-loved character of Nei, a tragic figure whose story arc came as a gutpunch to the comparatively innocent gamers of decades ago.

Anyway, back to the topic. Way back in the days of the BBS, and 2400Baud modems there was the first graphical online massively multiplayer RPG. It was called Shadow of Yserbius, it was on the now defunct Imagination Network/Sierra Network and it had me hopelessly hooked. The game allowed you to customize your character?s look much like PSO, you could change your hair, eyes, eye color, nose, mouth and clothes. One of characters I played had long gray hair, gray eyes, and gray robes http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif. I don't exactly remember his name but it was something based on storms.

Anyway, at some point, in signing up for another online game, that name whatever it was (storm related http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_razz.gif), was already taken. So I whipped out a thesaurus, found zephyr as a synonym and I?ve used it everywhere ever since http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_eek.gif.

Out of curiosity, did anyone else here play Shadow of Yserbius or it?s sequel Fates of Twinion?

First one: Draekkan (my high lvl Humar):
Since 1996 I joined the Ultima Dragons Internet Chapter, and my name in the UDIC was Observer Dragon. Ever since, whenever I created a character (in any game) I would use a derivative of that name (like my e-mail), and the most popular name I used was Draekko (pronounced like Draco, and almost guaranteed never to appear on an online game). But for RPG's, it sounded... I dunno... off. So I choose a more personified version, Draekkan.

My brand new Ramar (yes, it is fun to start over) is called Aquitaine and it's much more spontaneous than the first one. It's simply the name of the carrier where you begin in Freespace 2. I just thought it would be a cool name for a ranger.

This has been my handle for a long time, and the name of a CyerHero (cyberpunk with Hero System Rules) character. jinX was pretty much like a punk Wolverine with blue skin. WREN ccm.0 - HUcast
WREN is named after Wren of PS4 fame. I called him ccm.0 because he is the Close Combat Model Zero, since discontinued. WREN is the most badass of my characters.

Ciba Mato - HUnewearl
Well, she really looks like the girls from the Japanese band, Ciba Mato - so I HAD to name her after the group. She likes her tan, and her newly-dyed orange hair. Looks good in the brown outfit. Having a hard time roleplaying her, so she has kinda fallen by the wayside...

Sigerson - RAmar
He just looks like a military guy, especially in the brown RAmar outfit. Sigerson sounds like an old grizzled veteran's name. I even get into character with him and call everyone 'kid' or 'kiddo'.

Terra: Well I made a tall red head in a red dress FOmarl, and then I mulled over names, and Terra stuck. Later someone suggested a FF3 influence, and remember her turning into a 'flame form' during the game.. damn.. maybe it wasn't out of the blue after all, lol! I still have flashbacks to the orchestral parts in FF3.. never finished the game, but it's still my favorite FF (sometimes I get to a part in the game where it's just waaaay to open ended as to what I can do next.. so it just kind of sits there as I end up not chosing.. lol).

Terra Prime came about when Terra was the death of VMU shoot out. I still curse Sega for the assinine move of putting the cord connection on the FRONT of the controller.. I can't tell you how much more difficult that makes keeping everything untangled, and extracting oneself to grab a drink/snack/etc.

Technically she's in a coma till I 'erase' her, which I don't know if I have the heart to do (her file is there, just inaccessible).

Originally to be Terra' (not sure people would have gotten that) I decided to spell it out. Of course given the way section ids work, I lost my Redria and went Greenil. Of course knowing how that effects a Force in retrospect I'm kicking myself in the butt 45+ levels later.. thank you vmu.. :b

She's a lot shorter (I actually made a story, and she's a clone with some of the DNA deviations Ragol is famous for..), her face is a bit different and her hair style/head piece, same dress though. I had fun on the RP board setting Terra up, but then had to set her death up.. not sure if I ever posted Terra Prime's origination or next phase.. bites when RL gets in the way of good gaming and RP lol.

Dengar - RAcast Bounty Hunter turned Ragol Ranger Hunter. Also posted on the RP board on his origin a little bit.. the name comes from the StarWars bounty hunter series however.

Xweena - stems from my Everquest character Xweena, a halfling female warrior. We had a kind of 'weebastards' guild, of course a friend of mine (who also plays PSO) made Gabweell, the keys were a shorty race and 'wee' in the name (and the occasional 'WEEEEEEEEEEE!' chant when entering a zone, pking, or doing something good http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif).

I've thought about a 'weebastards' chapter in PSO, however the connotation might be bad here (not looting pilfering individuals). But wee'll see http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif Early next week there might be something on it.. some of the rules likely being have 'wee' in the name and the shortest character size in your race/class. May even try to get it more uniform (xweena/gabweell/hercuwees/etc lol) to heroes, shows, timeframes, gods, etc..

My post is vauge cause its been like 13 years since I read the entire line of books.. read an anthology a few months ago, but not the same.. Btw the other name I ever use is Tiamet. A derivation of Tiamat the chromatic dragon. This name goes back to my old fashion BBS, when I needed a sysop name.. was gonna use Lord Tiamat, but that was weird cause tiamat is a female dragon, so I changed it. Only reason I used it was I had been role-playing the day before and was perusing the monster manual while I dropped some kids off at the pool.

It seems like I came in kind of late on this, but here's my character names:

First, my two older characters:

E-100 Alpha-RAcast I got this name from Sonic Adventure. There's E-102 Gamma and E-101 Beta, but there's no E-100. So, following the pattern of Greek letters, E-100 should be Alpha.

Cerberus HC-RAmar This guy was supposed to look like a soldier from Opposing Force, and he had the ranger helmet with a green tint to the visor part. "Cerberus", or the reason I used it, was the StarCraft precursor campaign that featured a "Cerberus Unit" of elite soldiers. HC stood for Hazard Control, like in OpFor.

And finally:

Last Utopia-HUmar: This name comes from the Neo Geo Pocket Color game "Sonic Pocket Adventure". Last Utopia is a space ship or space station of some kind (the story doesn't clearly say, but I think it's the equivalent of the Egg Carrier), and it's also the name of the last level. Another interesting point: the game name I often use, Aquatic Relix, is another level in that same game.

Well I use the nick Twelve on just about everything(IRC, AIM, etc.) The reason for that is because my favorite character on Street Fighter III: 3rs Strike (all tho most dont agree with me) is the warrior clone of Necro aka Twelve.

Usually on games I pick a name and put 12 at the end of it. Android12 was chosen because thats what HUcasts are and thats what my first character is. the 12 at the end also makes it easier for people to talk to me, they can just say "12, This way!" or something to those lines.

My other character(RAmar) is just simply named Twelve(I might delete him and start over cause I know an nick that will give me Skyly ID) lol.

I got TwiNCannoN from the Command & Conquer: Red Alert music cd.. was looking for a name at the time and tried that out in quake as ".TwiN.CannoN." and it stuck, so that's pretty much my whole net alias, for icq and other things. Also sometimes "TNCN" (look at the capital letters in the name) , friends call me 'tc' or 'twin', basic enough, I like it..

Syora, my only other char in PSO atm, is the name I always use for elven bards in RPGs. Pretty wierd seeing her name above a futuristic chick's body but kinda cool at the same time ;)

Other names I'll use are "Necrophidius", jacked that one from the D&DMM lol.. literal meaning "undead snake" .. use that for darkies and/or necromancers in RPGish games.. and Frok Foulblood, for rogue type characters - my true RPG bloodline.

I chose "Spy" because it's ambiguos(sp) and mysterious. Spies can be the every-day Joe to Double-Oh Seven, with cool tech, babes, and a flowing trenchcoat(Think Vash's Trenchcoat). Spies can be assassins, pacifists, robots, whatever! So by being "Spy" I can be whatever I want to be, and it beats something like "TheRock86" or "Maximus."

My main character's name, Mika, is from a character I've had in mind for a while now. The name itself just sort of worked its way into my mind, not from any particular source. I wanted a Japanese name, but not something extremely common (such as Keiko).

I was very surprised and pleased that I could create her almost perfectly in PSO, outfit and all. Only thing wrong is the big ears.


My alternate character is a RAcasael named YN-0118. It's just a joke, since I don't really play her that much. Those who get it, get it. Those who don't, think "Neinth".

hey all i have to say is that spoilers suck, dont ever do it, i too was in the middle of PS2 and because of you neinth that game is so spoiled to me, i dont even want to play it now. and i never use guides on games i havent beaten. and if it had a story part in the so-called "perfect guide" then i wouldnt even read it if i even got that guide. i wouldnt read the storyline behind 2 because i have played all others but that one (including extensive play on ps3 http://www.pso-world.com/images/phpbb/icons/icon_smile.gif anyways my name aberu (thank you thank you, i know its original, but its really not) comes from akira toriyama's anime Dragon quest (based off of the insanely popular Dragon Quest RPG series) and well the main character is Abel, and since japanese do not have the letter L in their vocabulary the pronounce it Aberu (Ay-beh-roo) for instance they use the popular slang word "cool" from america but they say it like Kuuru (koo-roo). Jus pick sumtin really obscure so that no one else has it, i am tired of all the snake's, sephiroth's, and clouds. Also things like gokuu and all, well i said my piece. now peace!

By nickname is Mindblade, but i'm not sure exactly why. I think it was becasue my friends started calling me Mind becasue I'm smart, and then my other friend from Kendo(Japaanese sword fighting, if you care) started called me Blade, because I liked a little bit of a curved blade to my sword(and practice stick, mind you) So, one day, I just thhough it would sound cool if I combined them. Well, my RAcaseal was named Lenneth due to the fact that she has platinum hair and blue-black armor. For those that don't know "Lenneth" was the heroine from Valkyrie Profile, possibly one of the better RPGs ever made (anyone else out there glad that Enix has come back?).

My FOnewearl is named Anwynn, which is a name I've used for a VERY long time. Loosely translated from Welsh, it means "whitest" or "purest". Depending on the game, her full name is Anwynn yr Elyrchdu, which means "whitest of the black swans". Incedentally, "Annwn" is also the name of the Welsh underworld.

I picked my name about two weeks before PSO came out. I got it from Skies of Arcadia. The whole game I thougth this guys name was Glider. A week after I picked this name, I found out his name is really Gilder. I liked Glider much better so it just stuck.

Over time, Shado became a representation of myself. Everything I wanted to be, and everything I hated in myself. Being able to express those things through this character was very self enlightening. As such, Shado is my alternate indentity for just about everything.
