Ace Combat world - where every half-assed, economically ruined country can afford a super-wepon (I mean, just look at Estovakia's Aigaion and Chandelier projects... where the hell do they got money for it? Not mention materials needed...If I remember correctly, many of the ground based superweapons (Excalibur, Stonehenge, Megalith, Chandelier, etc) were originally build to counter the Ulysses asteroid or for other defensive uses. The Ace Combat wiki is making it sound like the whole world participated in some way. It just happens that the player's enemies always found a way to turn the defensive devices into superweapons (if they didn't, the games would be boring). Chandelier was anti-asteroid, and as for some of the others (Aigaion), its kind of what happens when a poor military run country pours all of its resources into military development.

I hate that thing. Hate, hate, hate. (Stuck on that mission now)

I finished it at just the second try

Stonehenge from Ace Combat 4 was more or less built by international community as "official" anti-Ulysses measure. After all was said and done, Eursea overrun it and used it against rest of ISAF, until it got owned by Mobius 1.

Chandelier was Estovakia's anti-asteroid measure (presumably as Stonehenge's range didn't cover whole Ace Combat world) but was actually never fully completed (in last mission which is all out battle between Emmerian task-force and remains of Estovakian army above it, you can actually see scaffolding around it.)

Belkan Excalibur or V2 and Osean SOLG (Strategic Orbital Linear Gun) were intended to be mass-destruction weapons from beginning.

Megalith was intended as a back-up in case Stonehenge wouldn't work, but Eursea re-configured it into super weapon early on.

Yes, that's partially why Belkan War happened in the first place.
Which makes me wonder how they afforded it and the army

Also, Aigaion is hard on hard, tough not as much with decent plane (and bit of crazy maneuvering) Typhoon, F-22A and Su-47 are good. If you can't/don't have them, then Su-33 is a must.

If you can't/don't have them, then Su-33 is a must.I've been trying with the F-22 (Mobius and the other download), SU-33 (standard I think, or maybe also the non-Yellow download). I'll give the Eurofighter a try sometime.

CrimsomWolf
May 15, 2009, 10:37 AM
I actually don't have any of those Microsoft "points", so I only used in games aircraft...

Generally, allied support is extremely useful here, especially when taking out Aigaion's escort (Electronic support ships have to go first, then Strigon Team, finally escort airships)

Similarly, don't stay in one place too long, or else Aigion's missiles are going to pwn you, pronto.

Eurofighter's XLAA is good when fighting at range, XMA6 for general spamming.

If you aren't shy about using any means of grabbing victory (on single at least) F-22's and Su-47's QAAM's can be useful, though by no means they're fire-and-forget weapons.

I don't think there is much jet fighter centred games besides Ace Combat anyway.

HAWX is pretty much inferior, at least from what I've seen in demo.

TalHex
May 19, 2009, 06:42 AM
hmm... I liked HAWX it seemed neat, but I don't like that mandatory 3rd person view mode... thing

CrimsomWolf
May 19, 2009, 08:36 AM
I don't say that HAWX was a bad game, but between it and Ace Combat series, I'd pick up Ace Combat.

HAWX controls on computer, without a pad were simply horrendous. I also found the briefings and airplane config menus in Ace Combat (at least, the newest installment) were much more informative and generally easier to figure out than in HAWX. I also think that Ace Combat 6 (which is the closest game in the series to HAWX) had the massive battles more organized: the "operations" (sort of sub-missions you sometimes had to pull in order to advance the front) allowed you to concentrate on what's most important quite easily.

And dogfights in Ace Combat (especially with aces) were much more fun than in HAWX. Maybe less realistic, but that's not why I play them (else, I'd fire up that old simulator from 1998 ).

Graphically, Ace Combat 6 was better.

All you need.

Plus, I just get a kick out of how into Ace Combat you guys are. Like I said, it's generally not a series that most people get into. It's something people play and forget. It's harmlessly irrelevant.

(Also, Talon, it's most certainly not a flight simulator. It's an action game. That's like saying NBA Jam was a sports sim.)

But hey, I've got no real reason to hate it, so shine on, you crazy diamonds.

EDIT: But more importantly, the Ace Combat team made the awful Star Fox Assault, so they do have at least one strike against them. Honestly, why a team known for air combat decided to add on-foot missions to a space-shooter is beyond me.

Ouch.

Star Fox 64 is worth buying an N64 for, and then maybe a couple of old NES consoles to place around it so that it won't feel lonely.

Or I guess there's always that Virtual Console thing, but without the big bulky controller and the rumble pack, I just don't think it would be the same.

Super Mario Galaxy is made of win. Hello SM64 v2! Corruption is nice, Brawl goes without saying.

We have Tales of Vesperia on the 360...

Plenty of fun games.

Speaking of Tales... Rita is freaking overpowered. Any spell that hits FIFTY times or more is silly. (One L1 overlimit is enough to spam Gold Cat 5 times, and fill 2.5-3 bars of OL) The only downside is that hitting bosses that much tends to make them spam OL too... (Violent Pain! xInfinity is still my favorite) Working on the Labyrinth of Memories, need to get lucky some more to access the final boss there.

Yeah, I've been playing games for almost twenty years now, and everybody always says that. It wasn't true then, and it isn't true now. (Trust me, the PS2/Xbox/GCN generation didn't hold a candle to the SNES/Genesis generation, especially if you want to talk RPGs.)
