I really wish I didn't have a clue. I figure just nutjobs trying to summon powerful demons gives you enough work. You'd think they'd realize that anything they could offer a demon, the demon could just take by force.

In reality, an explosion large enough to destroy the Earth would take a considerable length of time to complete. Simply enough, the Earth itself, in all its matter and systems, doesn't have enough potential energy to explode quickly. To cause a planet to explode the way we see it in films such as Star Wars or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, would require a torrential amount of energy, indeed.

My understanding is that its more like what happens to, say, an odometer if it goes past the maximum... it returns to 0.

I definitely don't think it's laziness. They went through thousands of years!
The end of the world will be 8/25/3026, no one alive now will be able to confirm this.
