They've created and shown off a red WiFi symbol, which indicates pay-to-play wi-fi, but no game has used it yet.

Samba De Amigo for the Wii has a red Pay To Play symbol on it. You must pay to download extra music tracks to play in the game. I think upcoming Rock Band and Guitar Hero games will feature this too. At least Wii owners will not have to go buy crappy track pack discs anymore.

The reason for pay to play games is that they have to maintain some sort of a server and that costs bandwidth and maintenance. I'm sure they make money off it too, but that's expected.
