Couldn't find this anywhere and may or may not be old news, but...
Did the US/EU servers ever get the update so that people who didn't want to play still could but they couldn't progress any further?

Uh... not that I'm aware of. Didn't JP only get that recently.

If you are talking about the "free" license, we haven't received that update yet.

I don't think we'll be getting it anytime soon... didn't they get it with the Supplemental Update?

Yeah its a part of the supplemental update. ( I am pretty sure). So dont expect that feature for a good 7 months or so.

Probably because you still need to pay to get the vast majority of the game as well as be able to use GC. Oh yes you can BUY GC while on an inactive (read: non-paying) account but you can't USE it until you pay for a subscription. As far as I've read the free play restricts you to lobbies and missions, no room or storage.
