Halo (and I'm sure some other games) actually does something rather nice - if you die very quickly after reloading a checkpoint at least five times in a row, it'll actually jump back to an earlier autosave. I've only had it kick in once or twice, but it's kind of a nice idea.

Gotta love checkpoints that don't reset certain data around you. I've had this happen in a few games before actually. Not fun.
