Yeah, there's an option to set a custom title somewhere in the user settings.

So if I take the custom title off, I'll be a PSOW Cultist?

But...but...that requires me to do work!
Jk, I'm curious now.
EDIT: Yea, I hit "reset" and it changed to PSOW Cultist.

Can't you manually change it, too?
I tried using the title " Resist/RealLife++ " and " Rappy Hunter " and they both worked fine.
Kinda destroys the actual purpose of having a list of titles for each certain post count milestone... I think?

Well, I make my own schedule at work, and since school started and I work on the kids unit at work, there hasn't been many kids.
I work at a mental health facility, and since the kids are at school, probably 90% of the kids we have during the summer, will be fine until vacations.
So, instead of having 15 kids show up a day, it will be like 1-2 kids a day :D
Also, I've even been posting on the official forums, up to 1,510 or so there, and I joined May 09'.

Users shouldn't be able to change them and custom titles should be given out by the mods like on NeoGAF.
Pat and I joined at the same time and yet...

That's what the custom avatars are for. Restricting both would just be lame.

Originally, the average user was not allowed to change his title. Sometime in 2002 (maybe 2003, I don't recall clearly), custom titles became permitted. The old sequence of assigned titles remain mostly for posterity. Besides that, it comfortably provides a title to the indecisive.
As for custom avatars, the biggest reason why only moderators (and some contest winners) have them, is that they were quite a nuisance to install on the original forum software. Every custom avatar had to be assigned manually by an admin. That gave rise to the rule that custom avatars are specifically a special-case scenario, provided exclusively to individuals that earn them, one way or another. They're a privilege of staff, and a reward for contest winners.

If it was 2003 it was early, since we've had custom titles as long as I've been here.
I've been slacking on posting outside of FKL. Dhy's got way more posts than me now.

We Joined at the same time, but I was more active.
If anything, I deserve a custom title!
The original forum software did not support custom user titles. Instead, users received specific user ranks based on their post count. After a few months, Admins were able to give out custom user titles to specific users. Then in April 2002, watashiwa gave that ability to all users:

We kept the tiered default levels during the forum upgrade and added a couple of intermediate levels. If you don't set a custom user title, you'll be given one of the default ones.
