well at least starcraft 2s actually being made (ive been waiting and drooling for that game for over a year now) and not just being translated.

yeah i know what you mean, a year does seem kind of long to just translate the game into English...and given the fact that they could probably have a computer do it, and then get a translator to go back over it...it sounds even more of a reason for them to have released it sooner...my thoughts are, how many Japanese people are actually going to be playing Wi-Fi when it is released in English? ..all we can do is hope i guess lol, but there's still the whole rest of the world to play with

I'd be willing to bet that a decent amount of Japanese would still be playing PS0. Lord only knows how long I played PSO before dropping it [and then eventually playing PSU].

Yeah... well like 10 years between SC1 and 2 is driving me insane. If that game doesn't come out by 2010, I might just kill myself.

ROFL! Patience you say! HA! Americans aren't known for patience! They are known of over the top action movies (BAY-SPLOSIONS!), porn, and fat people.....also rednecks.

What I'm tryin to say is this, It seems like PSZ didn't really need a full year to come out. Maybe a couple months in the least.

Basically, the reason they waited so long was because they couldnt translate in time for LAST holiday season and instead decided to wait until THIS holiday season. Which is super lame.

Well, here's a couple of reasons why it takes so long.

1. Japanese to English isn't 1:1. Kanji carry with them multiple connotations, some of which can be broad or very specific. It's been a while since I've done kanji studies, but I know for a fact that many of the Kanji I've learned are either partly inaccurate or encompass a wide range of meanings. It doesn't take all that long to translate the menus but it takes longer to translate the dialogue.

2. PS is not exactly the most popular franchise in NA. In order to maximize profits they have to release it near the holiday season.

3. Regardless of whether a game exists in another language or not, designers don't just throw it out on the market immediately. Some time is spent is planning and looking at the consumer demographic. Time must be spent deciding whether or not it should be localized (by looking at previous franchise sales and seeing if money can be made). Furthermore, that's just thinking about localizing it. Then actually comes localizing, which involves removing things that are pretty much irrelevant to the outside world. I haven't played PSZ so I don't exactly know if there were advertising plugs in the Japanese version, but this usually accounts for most of the time spent.

God dammit all. If I wasn't so head-over-heels for PS0 [and I wasn't playing PSO] then i'd restart my PSU account.

Dammit. I miss the community more than anything. They were so much nicer than other MMO's i've played. WoW especially. Not that i'm a carebear, but the people are total jackasses in that game.

If they had gotten the English version out faster, perhaps there would be more Japanese players online. However, they didn't and now everyone's gone to the new Dragon Quest game.

You're comparing apples with oranges now, PSZ is an Action RPG that plays over Wi-Fi, DQ9 is a turn based RPG that plays locally only, can't play online with people from the other side of the earth.

People don't play DQ9 for the online mode, they played it for the same reason they played any other DQ, it's not an Online RPG.

Mike

Apples and oranges? No. Maybe oranges and mandarins. Madden 09 and PS0 would be apples and oranges. Or pigskin and photons.

Anyways, I'm saying that if Sega had translated the game faster, there'd be more players online than there are now. When they take so much time to get a game out, you get one group of players peaking while the population of the other has fallen off dramatically because they've moved on to something else, like Dragon Quest. When you've got at least English-Japanese translations in the shortcut chat, it's obvious that the designers had the idea to keep Japanese players and English-speaking players playing together but when it takes a little less than a year to get the game out to the other half of your player-base, you've taken too long.

Madden '09 is actually more comparable to PSZ since it's an online game.

DQ9 on the other hand is a game you can only play with people close-by. (And that's if they own a DS + the game.)

So I guess you could compare DQ9 with Phantasy Star Portable 1 maybe?

Anyways, people simply stopped playing because of the lack of content I guess, not because of another game.

So Gears of War and Halo would then be more like PS0 then? I like your logic.

Anyways, the people who were playing PS0 are now likely playing Dragon Quest.

I like your logic more, people quit World of Warcraft for Final Fantasy 7.

EDIT: My logic is that people quitted due to the lack of content, you're the one comparing 2 different types of games.

EDIT2: DQ9 is so 2 months ago, people are more likely playing POKEMAN right now.

Hopefully, the english release will also bring quite a few Japanese players back. This is definitely set-up so that it'll attract a lot of people for online play. Mainly because people on the DS were waiting for this kind of game.

Perhaps not FF7, but FF13. And WoW, from what I garner, is an MMORPG. PS0 isn't. It's just a game with online multiplayer. In fact, I'd have to say PS0 is more fun locally since you don't have to rely on the pictochat to scribble out messages. Couple online mode with a chat of some kind, like the IRC "waiting rooms" out there and online is a little more bearable.

And you're right about the pokemans. I completely forgot about it. I'm not particularly fond of either game though to be honest.

So now you're saying Phantasy Star Online isn't an Online Action RPG, you know what, I give up.

(Yes i'm comparing PSZ to PSO because they're both comparable games.)

(An Online RPG is an Online RPG, Mass Multiplayer or not it dosen't matter, it's still an Online RPG.)

(Usually when people quit an Online RPG, it's because of another Online RPG, not because of a Console RPG.)

(... Or simply because the game lacks content to the player's taste.)

tl;dr People don't quit Online RPGs for Console RPGs.

Mike
Sep 30, 2009, 10:45 PM
I'm saying that Phantasy Star Zero isn't, not Phantasy Star Online. The 0 and the O are similar but they are different. People got bored with PS0 and moved on to a game that looked more interesting. If PS0 had the same type of online play that PSO then I would call it an online RPG. It doesn't though.

i refuse to compare the madden crappy games with a game that is such a higher awesome level (its actually good and on top of that awesome) while madden i give maybe a 3 tops on a scale of 1 to 10 and i would give pso a 9 at the very lowest probably a 9.7 or so going that exact.

:-DIt doesn't matter how long it takes for a game to be released, or how much we complain. Some companies(coughcoughSEGAcough) have reasons to make a release take so long. I'm hoping they're adding extra content, although that may be in vain because then the Japanese would get weepy because we would have more stuff. Americans (especially Texans) have little or no patience. I know, because I'M from Texas. But aside from that, PSZ is released in about a month. Doesn't take much patience to wait till November. Plus, i've got "KH 358/2 Days" to keep me preoccupied.

In cases where this happens, the game usually gets another Japanese release with the subtitle "International" or something. At least in SE and sometimes even From Software's case. But who knows.
