but lately I've been using Chrome as my main browser. It loads fast and doesn't eat up nearly half my ram like good ol' Firefox likes to. However that doesn't mean Chrome is perfect, sometimes it likes to use up 100% of my CPU (which is worse than eating your ram because if your CPU is taxed then you can't do %U&(^%)$#($)%($ .) I might go back to Firefox if this keeps up.

It's so... pretty.

Open more tabs, windows, and programs.

That'll fixit.

Fight bandwidth CPU usage % fire with fire.

When did you swap off of Firefox? If I recall correctly, version 3.5 fixed many of the more common memory leaks. And remember, there are a few tricks you can do to lower the amount of memory Firefox uses, excluding leaks.

Right around 3.5 actually, I switched over to Chrome because it didn't take 30 seconds just to boot. However I might be switching back due to my computer going slowing than a snail on fly paper.

Then you shouldn't have taken Helen of Troy.

30 seconds to boot? Did you try doing a completely clean install then redoing your settings? I try and do that every major update.

I actually think Chrome isn't too great on slower machines. I use it on my busted-up old-school 2003 Dell at home, but I'm not sure it compares favorably to Firefox in terms of speed.

It's quite nice on a slightly beefier machine, though.

My laptop is only two years old in both model and years owned, my processor has a clock speed of 1.6 Ghz and I have 2 Gigs of Ram. I don't think my specs are the problem here as that's actually pretty average for modern laptops. The problem I was talking about in Chrome actually stems from using two tabs and watching flashing video in both of them. For some reason this makes Chrome use up to 100 percent of your CPU.

@Kethcup: I don't do an outright clean install, I think I will do that over the weekend and see how that goes.

Reminds me to ask.
What's the lifespan before outdated in PC's again?

Yesterday right? Or 4 years still?

I better scrounge up money before a netbook has more everything than my desktop. They already are getting up there in HDD space. Or wait it out until the netbooks can do more than just social timewasting? (and "smartphone" equivalents? Don't have any of those either... almost got one just for the Tetris before)

It kept crashing my computer every time I opened Firefox, even after my virus software cleaned it out. I even reinstalled FireFox, and tried a system restore. Needless to say, I'll be sticking with Opera for a while.

My laptop has been usable for 4-5 years now, after just a RAM upgrade (cheaper to upgrade it myself than let Dell do it) and new hard drive. Desktops can be kept up decently with periodic updates of some components, but fall too far back and a whole new build looks better and better.

I think netbooks are also capable of some light work, I think the eeePC came with OpenOffice.org (includes programs similar to Word, Excel, and Powerpoint among others). Gaming? Probably nothing more than cards, pinball, or flash on netbooks.

A week from today Windows 7 is officially released, what little I've followed has all been positive.
