To answer your question, yes you can play online.
You'll have to configure yout settings with the bundled browser software disc.
If you bought the system used they might not have given you that cd.
Make sure you have it, or go back to the store and make them give it to you.
Also, you can only connect via a 56k Dial-Up connection.
If you want to use a broadband connection, you'll have to find a BBA for the Dreamcast. The only way to find one at this time, would be on ebay, and they are rediculously over-priced.

Which version do you have? V1 or V2? If you have the former, yeah go for it. I still play and I rarely ever run into hackers (just avoid crowded lobbies...I always get my DC reset in those http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/icon_frown.gif). V2 I'm not really sure about either. Even with Challenge mode and stuff, you still have your cheaters who can ruin the game. IMHO, even if I had V2, I would not pay to play on those servers. I only play on them 'cos it's free w/V1. Not worth paying for.
Oh, and my idea of a crowded lobby? 30-40 people o_0.
If you do play online, avoid US Oberon like the plague...or even just totally skip the US servers all together. I only play on the Japan ones, sometimes EU, but mostly Japan.

for hardware:
1. have a dc with a modem (+ game and vmu)
2. have a browserdisk
3. have an working dial-up isp
for gaming:
axispoint is right.
v1: free so worth a try
v2: european version free so...
but most people i know only chat the time away until pal-version of GCNpso hits the shelfes... http://www.pso-world.com/psoworld/images/phpbb/icons/smiles/anime2.gif
