Private games in PSPo2

When you play online (not ad-hoc), how does it work? Do you join random lobbies and hope your friends are there, or can you seek out your friends specifically and hold private games with them no one can join? How exactly does it work?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I've looked around a bit and haven't really found anything specific on this. :( Thank you!

join random lobbies, or make a passworded games, you can also search for your friends (via friend card) and join their games as well

You can search from your card list about who is online. then you can also join their room if the room is not full yet.
