what are you going to do when the servers close?

as someone looking from the outside in, i find it a little creepy the way people are planning meeting points to sit around and obsess over the game ending in such ritualistic fashion. i can understand the game meaning a lot to you guys, i was addicted to pso my whole life but around a couple of years ago i really started to realize how unhealthy it can be to obsess over items and go through the same levels over and over again for years living in a virtual online community. i have relapses every now and then and think about how great it was but i dont go back and install the games anymore i just think about why i quit them in the first place and dont obsess over playing them anymore. so im wondering where you people are going to go next with your time once the servers close. im sure many of you are going to have withdrawal symptoms.

i noticed it a couple of days ago when lots of you guys willingly attacked sega for its closure which is something i dont normally see from most people. im a negative person in general so i do stuff like that all the time but i found it a little strange for people to agree with me which means some of you guys really do have an attachment to it more so than just a game to waste time on. it meant something to you guys all the work you put in rather than just the fun you had on it.so im saying some of you must feel like a part of your life is gone through an investment that never really mattered. all phantasy stars have ever been is just a series of levels with a random drop variable i mean its hardly the end of the world. they mass produce mmos these days and theyre all the same lol.

I think its only human nature to miss things you had fun with. I dont really see why you considering it creepy. Humans emotions dont just stop because your playing in a virtual world, you still have to interact with other players, and still make friends, regardless of whether you may never see them physically.

One thing I learned in life is not to do too much of one thing. Balance is the key to everything.

The way I treat MMOs these days is I'll play them for around 3 months (if i can make it that long. it usually becomes a chore after a week). I look at the new features they implemented into the game and then get bored. I no longer feel like I have to get all the good items or make friends with people in the game and dedicate my life to building up a character. something just snapped in me a long time ago im literally incapable of of obsessing over games. same with porn. i dont even have a desire to look at porn! i hoarded it for so long that its no longer of interest to me.

Personally, I've gave up on this game over a year ago so with the servers closing, it doesn't do much to me. However, this game is full of fun memories of friends I've met with and keep in touch with even now. It'd be nice to meet some people in these last 2 months and just sit and chat about how the game was.

Of course there are some people who are really taking this hard, they've put alot of work into this game and to see it all just go like that really sucks. This game, for all its faults and unused potential, was a great way to meet new people and have fun, just like PSO and any other online game out there. Its the reason why I truly enjoyed PSO and PSU as much as I did, the friends I made on the games, once they start leaving I would pretty much follow cause I would slowly begin to lose interest in the game.

Once the servers finally close, I myself, will just continue with my life. Real life has been keeping me pretty busy so I've had little to no time to invest in any major MMO or Online game, tho I dabble every now and then. I do however look forward to a possible US/EU release of PSP2, but I hope they'll take the time to work on a new installment of the PS series for PC/PS3/360 and hope they learn from their mistakes to make it a game truly worth playing.

My first thought when I read the initial post here was "Could this message possibly be any more condesending to the people that are sad to see this game go?"

After stopping and thinking about it... yeah I'm still thinking that.

I've played this game very casually, never worrying about being the "best" or trying to get all the rarest items or anything like that. My favorite part is the clothing and the "My Room" feature. I'm much more into PSO, where I have much more playtime.

I've heard the critisizm for years. "It's all a waste of time, the people aren't real, do something more productive, etc." I often wonder why people seem to assume that PSO or PSU is the ONLY thing I do.

I go to college, I have a job, I'm learning programming, I'm even recentlly starting to get involved in web page design. I scored a 96% on my last Calculus test. I seem to be doing pretty well for myself. PSO and PSU doesn't seem to be holding me back. And yet I've met interesting people through these games and had some good memories and just nice pleasant experiences. Some people I've even gotten closer with, and I have a friend in Japan that I exchange Christmas Gifts with each year that I met through PSO. To this day we still talk on a regular basis.

Just because I'm not making money on something doesn't mean it's a waste of time. All work and no play make you a boring person. You have to let yourself do things you enjoy from time to time. And I feel it quite appropriate to give my character a proper sendoff and spend her last moments in an enjoyable lobby surrounded by pleasent company.

I understand where your coming from with this actually, it's why I take Long breaks from Psu myself. When it boils down to it, it's just as simple as ABC ,(Do missions, Level stuff, Repeat).

Although there are more MMO's, let's face it.....unless you have a pretty darn good PC, your left with the Gaming systems like the 360 which does not have a huge Library of MMO's or Good one's at that. Guys tend to grind away at the mechanics of the game since no one is trying to virtually get them pregnant. Sure there are casual gamers who don't care about the game and play it in moderation but the guy nerds who really care about the game tend to have issues with the lost content of the game when they are shut down more so than girls who don't really care and will infest any moderately good game that they can frolic in with friends.

For example, look at that recent star trek action movie. Guy nerds were raging that the movie was for other audiences than just trek fans. No one cared and the movie studios got tons of money anyway from the general populous than just their nerd core audience of guys and also girls who only really like star trek for social reasons rather than the more nerdy guy things.

Guys get shafted when it comes to entertainment. It's hard to explain to a girl or people who are more casual. to some of us like myself it's simply not worth dealing with at all to try and play long term and grind away at the game as it's not sexy like girls giggling and rolling in flowers in PSU.

It's rare I agree with something so much to have to quote ya again. This statement here is so true. Saw the movie (not a Star Trek fan) and thought it was average at best, but not the best film like everyone kept saying.

The end conclusion of my point is that nerds are too critical for their own good. I am a female gamer but, contrary to your belief, I am a hardcore grinding machine when it comes to getting the best of stuff from PSU. I guess I liked the best of both worlds, I enjoyed getting my great palette but I think the key was the great friends I made online that kept me from getting bored with PSU. There was a time I was getting a littlebored but Imet some new friends and entered a different aspect of the game...TA... Before the TA rant goes on I have to say if you like TA you like it, if you don't you don't. I happened to enjoy setting goals for myself to accomplish.

In a nut shell, I have a 40 hour a week job, 3 children and bills to pay. That stuff comes first. PSU is something I enjoy and really appreciate my friends I have on the US server. I hate to lose the stuff I worked hard to get but life goes on. I, myself, have decided to move to the jp servers with some good friends and continue the fun and it has been fun... same just in a different location.

Well, I stopped playing PSU on the US PC/PS2 servers a while ago and began playing PSP2 in my free time. With the servers closing, I'll probably continue playing PSP2 just because I enjoy it more than I ever did PSU. It also reinforces the idea that from now on I'll only buy PSO-related games in their Japanese versions so not to deal with these issues with content, updates, and eventual early cancellation of servers.

When I look back on what made me play Phantasy Star games for years at a time all I can say is that it was trying to get all the rares that I wanted to play with in the game and every time I successfully did that not even the good level designs could keep me playing. There was just no endgame to any of the phantasy stars that i've played. I don't know what else to say other than is it really worth for me at least to waste the time getting all the rares if I'm going to feel like I'm wasting my time to continue playing? Pretty hard to justify and not even online "friends" I meet make it any better, lol...So I do think Phantasy Star has a life cycle which is why they dump the games and stop supporting them. It calls into question why work so hard for something that will be lost. Not even games like PSP2 can really save you especially when they pull the same trick where they release expansions that you simply must buy. Eventually your work will no longer be supported and there will be better offerings. It's a never ending work cycle so I don't see why anyone should care about the game ending. It's just going to startup again and I for one don't plan to waste my time with long term goals that will only lead to nothing thus making the whole point of phantasy star as nothing more than a ride that restarts when sega needs more money.

Casual gamers and females will always win with this, lol. Which is why MMORPGs can bite me.

EVE Online however has had a perfect track record of free expansions and has been up since 2003.

Having checked my schedule for March/April, I've been made aware of that I'll be having the 1st of April free from school. Unless anything unexpected comes up, I'll do my darndest to be there to witness the exact moment when the servers go down and I get disconnected. After that I'll wave goodbye to my characters and blow a kiss farewell to the world of Online Roleplaying Games. I'm way too obsessive about games like this. I promised myself to make PSU my last online roleplaying experience and it'll be with my best interest in mind to keep it that way. :)

I do believe I gave the De Ragan Slayer as well as alot of other items for the past 6 months or so. I was trying to give new players more reason to stay and improve our population...seems I failed :(

The jp server is nice, just a good bit learning involved but some EN players have made it easier. I am trying to be as polite as possible to fit in since I am a bit out of my culture zone. I used to play on the PSO servers with some very nice jp players and I'm sure it will be the same his go around.

Well I've already moved to PSO GC once again... but an interesting aspect of PSO is not the rares and whatnot, it's the replay value. Every class and every section ID has seperate unique abilities and gameplay.
Not on any other MMO have I met players who have gone and made every class in the game and truly trained them to high levels.
The gameplay of PSO was never for me, a grindfest. It's more of a game I call "chilly". But when playing online, the fun is tremendously increased. More players add more fun. It's really that simple.

But I think Sega is trying to go away from the original PSO complex because of the shutdowns on the GC/DC/PC servers... even with BB released.
I think the major reason for that was simple, internet gaming had not advanced so far, such as consoles with wireless capabilities. The gamecube and the Dreamcast were wired, and thus a hassle for people. Which also made them have problems playing. Also... the pay-to-play on consoles is always a bummer, I think it would be smarter to have a item shop...

I have college also after im done with PSU(funny it starts next week), and I hope to excel more.. but usually games are never in my way. The whole guy-girl factor Red Ring you mention, doesn't really make any sense to me.. I've met women who have grinded 18 hours a day, and no they are not tom-boys. I'm a guy and I don't grind like a mad man, I rather like to have fun while playing.. that also doesn't mean I don't have good characters...

But when PSU goes, I'll either move back to GC as the main system, or try out PSZ. I just hope/wish some day a new and truly IMPROVED(not changed entirely like PSU) Phantasy Star series will come out.

I'll definately make some appearences on the PC/PS2 this friday and after just because it's free. Life after PSU started awhile ago for most of us who saw the cracks in the ship. I'm happy (and a little shocked) to say that I re-newed my pc/ps2 account just now. I'll be layed back in the cut tonight and throughout MAG3 if anyone wants to join me. (What's this talk of a new Dark Fish form?)
